Review: R.I.P.D.

Jul. 19, 2013by: Chris Bumbray

PLOT: Nick Walker (Ryan Reynolds) is a Boston cop, who's killed in the line of duty by his crooked partner (Kevin Bacon). Having been guilty of corruption himself, Nick is forced to join the Rest In Peace Department (R.I.P.D), where he's partnered with a former old west lawman, Roy Pulsipher (Jeff Bridges) to police the undead.

REVIEW: A few days ago I complained about RED 2, which coincidentally not only shares a co-star with R.I.P.D (Mary-Louise Parker), but also happens to be the sequel to a movie R.I.P.D's director, Robert Schwentke directed. As bad as that was (and it was BAD) somehow R.I.P.D manages to be even worse, and easily takes the dubious honor of being the summer of 2013's biggest disaster.

Everything about R.I.P.D just goes disastrously wrong right from the first frame, where we jump ahead to Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges pursuing a terribly cheap looking CGI baddie (the undead souls are all poorly rendered CGI ghouls) through Boston, only to zap back a few days to Reynolds' death at the hands of his partner, Bacon. Aspiring to be a mix of comedy and sci-fi action, R.I.P.D doesn't succeed at either, with it coming off as a fourth-rate MEN IN BLACK clone, with the only major difference being that instead of aliens, you get the undead, which are souls that have somehow managed to evade judgement and are hanging out on earth.

The MEN IN BLACK similarities are plentiful, with Bridges playing the grizzled veteran in the Tommy Lee Jones mold, and Ryan Reynolds the smart-ass rookie a la Will Smith. Neither are memorable. Bridges is basically re-creating his Oscar-nominated turn as Rooster Cogburn in the Coen Bros., TRUE GRIT, with the only difference being that this time he doesn't wear an eyepatch. Bridges is saddled with many endless bad jokes about coyotes having violated his dead corpse in the Old West, to the extent that at one point he even sings a song about it. Bridges is a brilliant actor, but you'll feel embarrassed watching him here.

Ryan Reynolds doesn't fare any better. He still hasn't found a really good star vehicle that plays to his strengths. In R.I.P.D he comes off as terribly bland and doesn't have much presence. As bad as Bridges is here, he always has presence. The screenplay at least tries to give Reynolds some kind of back-story, with him leaving behind a wife (Stephanie Szostak) who thinks he's corrupt. He's unable to communicate with her as while on earth he looks like an old Chinese guy (James Hong- that's right- Lo Pan!). Sound familiar? If you ever watched DEAD LIKE ME it should. Jeff Bridges gets to look like a super model (Marissa Miller) although the comedy that you'd expect to be mined out of that is pretty much squandered as when men leer at him, most of the time you see him as Miller.

I imagine a lot of the blame for R.I.P.D is going to go to Robert Schwentke, and to be sure R.I.P.D is a jumbled mess. The action sequences are agonizing to watch, with lots of presumably pricey 3D gimmicks being thrown in to make them seem cool but they never even come close to being memorable. The film is also extremely predictable, and from the second Reynolds is knocked off by Bacon (only five minutes into the movie) it becomes painfully obvious how this is all going to pan out.

What's really a shame about R.I.P.D is the fact that the premise has a lot of potential. If cops from all throughout human existance are being pressed into joining the R.I.P.D why is this world never explored? Other than Mary-Louise Parker as their (naturally) disapproving chief, you never get to know any of the other undead cops. What a waste!

R.I.P.D is bad enough that once it finally comes to an end (with another big action set-piece that destroys most of a city, this time Boston), I felt like I had been sitting in the theater for hours and hours. To my surprise, the movie wasn't even ninety minutes long, but it felt endless. R.I.P.D isn't just bad, as say- RED 2 is. This is the kind of fiasco that seriously damages careers. The big action sequence probably had the studio hoping they'd get another AVENGERS. Well, that's exactly what they've got here- another AVENGERS. Too bad that the AVENGERS movie it's like is not the Marvel Blockbuster, but rather the 1998 flop with Uma Thurman and Ralph Fiennes. That's pretty bad.

Extra Tidbit: R.I.P.D is even worse than AFTER EARTH and THE LONE RANGER. This is JONAH HEX territory.

Despite the low review, I'm still really excited to see this. I'm just expecting a good time with a couple of funny jokes and some good action scenes in between. I'm not expecting anything mind blowing or artsy when it comes to a film or concept like this. Just your average light action comedy in the same vein as Men in Black.

Your entertainment expectations are pretty low.

Why would you be "really excited" to see something you expect to be, at best, totally average? I'm not criticizing. Just curious.

Hmm

I saw it. First off, the review is making this movie alot worse than it actually is. Having said that, this isn't necessarily a bad movie, just an incredibly average one. The CGI isn't bad, it's just obviously CGI and not the quality of, say, Pacific Rim. I didn't feel embarassed for Jeff Bridges, he was genuinely good here (the best performer), everyone else did phone it in. It's not the antichrist of a film this review purports it to be, it's just another average sci-fl/action flick that

Ok, who thought this was going to be anything approaching good? I'm almost mad at Jeff Bridges for being in this, and I always found Ryan Reynolds to be little more than a talking meat bag. And to say this is a bigger disaster than Lone Ranger, it MUST be bad. Boy, if only we could go back to summer 2008 (I believe?) when The Dark Knight was out. Now THAT was summer to go to the movies.

Reynolds needs a better agent or something, I kinda like the guy I don't think he is a bad actor he just needs some good roles. And yes when I first saw the trailer I called it looking like a bad tv movie.

Reynolds is lucky that his other movie Turbo is going to be #1 at the box office. So at least he's got that. Let's just hope he's still around for the Deadpool movie.

not sure if its been done yet

but we need to add Ryan Reynolds to the movie jail segment because he is guilty as hell, his failures far outweigh his victories. This marks the 4th comic book movie he has almost single handily ruined (Blade 3. Green Lantern, Wolverine and RIPD) and the only thing those movies have in common are him. I like him a lot but he makes a ton of shit. He should stick with comedies bc none of these are working no wonder Deadpool is moving at a snails pace, I mean what kind of box office draw does he

Not as bad as reviewed here.

I attended a preview screening of R.I.P.D. last night. I have to say, it is not as bad as the reviews are making it out to be. In fact, I found it to be lighthearted fun and an easy watch. I had an idea going in that, based off the previews, the movie would have some pretty terrible CGI. In fact, had I not received a free screening pass, I would have skipped out on seeing it in the theater because of that. So, I didn't go in expecting a lot at all, but I was pleasantly surprised that I ended

In fact, had I not received a free screening pass, I would have skipped out on seeing it in the theater because of that. So, I didn't go in expecting a lot at all, but I was pleasantly surprised that I ended up having a good time with it, despite the horrible CGI. I won't lie...it is horrible, with the exception of the final act that has some impressive vortexes and collapsing buildings. The monsters look absolutely atrocious...early 2000s caliber or even something out of the most recent Resident Evil video game cut-screen animation. On par with I Am Legend bad! However, the movie is saved by Bridges. He is great in the role, even if it is a copy of True Grit for the most part. I have always liked Reynolds and find his on-screen sense of humor very reminiscent of early Chevy Chase. It is simply a fun movie that you shouldn't be too critical about. I will say, though, that it is definitely a Men in Black clone through and through. But, remember, the original comic was just that. That shouldn't have blind-sided anyone! Just go into it expecting bad CGI, and a fun ride along with Bridges and you won't be disappointed. And...while I'm at it....Red 2 is not horrible either! It was a fun time as well. I barely remember the first Red, so the people who seem to hate it are comparing it to the first one. I may have benefitted by not re-watching it before seeing the second. I remember thinking the first was just "ok", but I had a fun time with Red 2. It is another light-hearted and humorous ride. Don't take either of these films too serious. It's summer time, and occasionally...like when drinking a cold amber beer on a hot day...you need something lighter instead of heavier in order to make the day enjoyable!

Ryan Reynolds= movie jail

I agree with Avatard. Ryan Reynolds is done. Best thing he's done in the last 10 years is his silent cameo in "Ted, the only other worth mentioning would be "Buried" and "Adventureland". Who gets excited for a film staring the guy who for one time played Van Wilder?
Also, R.I.P.D. was directed by Robert Schwentke who directed "Red", which I felt suffered from the pretty much the same flaws and misfires as I'm hearing with his new film. Big surprise there.

This weekend, I'll go see something that's been out for a while now.

Only 7 top critics reviewed the film on Rottentomatoes.com, which is usually not a good sign. R.I.P.D., Red 2, or Turbo? This July Summer weekend fucking sucks with new releases. Going to see "Pacific Rim"!
Also, what is up with all the tie ins with this week's top three releases?

I generally agree with Joblo.com & it's reviews. In saying that, I must say I loved Red 2. So, based on this reviewer stating Red 2 was horrible, I will be keeping an open mind on RIPD. I like most of Ryan Reynolds films including Green Lantern. I,don't expect this to be the best movie of the summer, but u bet it will be better than 3 out of 10.

"Worse Than Lone Ranger"

The Lone Ranger isn't even bad to begin with. If RIPD is even moderately fun I'm fine with that because that is all this movie said it would be. If it's anything like Jonah Hex or Ghost Rider or Green Lantern, then well I'll have a great time making fun of how stupid it was for years to come.

Haha, Wow!!!

I will start by saying I have not seen this movie, and I have not decided if I will. As with any movie, TV Show, vacation, etc. You can read reviews all day, but in the end it is still your own decision to see it.
That being said, I find it very funny how much hate seems to go on towards Ryan Reynolds, and pretty much half of the actors/movies out this summer season. So you agree or like his career choices, then don't support him. You don't see them ragging on you for working part time at

I'm starting to think Chris Bumbray is an asshole.

I haven't seen R.I.P.D, and don't plan to, but I doubt it's as bad as this review makes it out to be. In fact, I'd bet money that all the jokes that this reviewer says are bad, actually get huge laughs in a packed theatre.
But those who can't, instead review...and review some more...and eventually start to hate every movie they see.

It is as awful as Chris has said. Of the 20 or so people in the theater, I only heard 2 or 3 laugh at the movie the whole time. It isn't funny at all but it keeps trying and trying. It's super poorly written and it's never good at all.

God I hate these whiners who complain about reviews. People are allowed to dislike this movie. If Chris Brumbray dislikes this movie, and his job is to write reviews, he better god damn write a poor review. I don't understand this trend of whining like a little bitch just because you disagree with a review. The worst part is "I haven't seen RIPD, and don't plan to...". Then STFU, what kind of opinion could you possibly have against someone who's job it was to sit down and critique it? None.

I chose to see the Conjuring which was excellent. Glad to have read your review before making my decision. Keep up the good work. We need people that are honest about movies that suck.

RIP Ryan Reynold's career

I've been rooting for him since he was cast in Green Lantern. Sadly, he hit his prime in the mid 00's and he'll probably never be a star. He needs to do some out-of-the-box movies to gain back some credibility. Unless this movie does well this weekend, but who am I kidding - it's not a remake or a kid's movie so it'll be a bomb.

I wouldn't call either RIPD or RED 2 nearly as heinous as you've made them out to be. They weren't anything special, but they're far from the terrible, awful pieces of cinema they've been made out to be. RIPD had a somewhat fun vibe to it, with Jeff Bridges bringing his A game and the action scenes being good fun. They may not be anything terribly special, but neither film is the disaster it's been made out to be. And, of all the films I've seen this summer, neither of these were the worst.

And no, After Earth was by far worse than this. Even if bland, Ryan Reynolds is still a charming, watchable actor and Jeff Bridges always kicks ass. But Will Smith's kid is grating and annoying, and that accent that Smith had throughout the film was annoying as hell. Both RIPD and RED2 were by far better than After Earth.

I usually agree with Cris Bumbray but not this time. RIPD isn't good, but it's not that bad either. Definitely not at the same level as Jonah Hex. Yes, the coyote jokes were too much, but Jeff Bridges stole the show for me. nothing memorable but fun 90 minutes.
