Review: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Spoiler Free)

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Spoiler Free)
12.18.2015
8 10

PLOT: Several decades after the defeat of the Empire, a new dark presence in the force rises, and two young people – Finn (John Boyega) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) may hold the key to salvaging the rebellion.

REVIEW: STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS may be the most anticipated movie of all-time. In fact, STAR WARS fans have been clamoring for a proper follow-up to the original trilogy ever since 1983, the year RETURN OF THE JEDI premiered. In the interval we’ve gotten plenty of STAR WARS – too much maybe – with the prequels and the re-releases of the original trilogy in increasingly compromised forms (even if it was fun for those of us born too late to see them theatrically on the big screen at last). But now, with George Lucas stepping aside for a new generation of filmmakers, we’ve got a first for the saga – a STAR WARS film by fans, for fans.

Sure enough, you can tell director J.J Abrams is as big a STAR WARS fan boy of any of us. The original trilogy is revered to in such a way that THE FORCE AWAKENS seems distinctly patterned on A NEW HOPE, a fact which both works to the film’s favor and hampers it somewhat. It works in that it’s the ideal form to introduce new characters who’ll anchor the series, with John Boyega as Finn contributing the film’s heart, being a kind of surrogate for the audience, while Daisy Ridley is more instantly iconic as the heroine Rey.

All of us who were lucky enough to see THE FORCE AWAKENS early were asked to sign agreements not to divulge any spoilers, so this review – by necessity – is going to be vague. However, not knowing much outside the trailers is really the only way to properly enjoy this. While the plot is quite thin, Abrams has sprinkled in some almost Shakespearian melodrama that’s exactly in-line with the saga, making this a true “space opera” as the originals were so often called.

The issue is that so many people are introduced that even at 135 minutes, THE FORCE AWAKENS feels like a rushed primer on this new universe. Happily, most of the new characters are excellent, with Ridley, Boyega, and Oscar Issac as a rascally Rebellion pilot named Poe Dameron. And let’s not forget BB-8, which is like a millennial version of R2-D2 and should sell lots (and lots) of toys and – of course – is pretty damn cute.

The bad guys don’t fare quite as well, with neither Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux or Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma having too much to do. The exception is Adam Driver, who makes an imposing villain as Kylo Ren, a figure who should easily take his place in the pantheon of great STAR WARS baddies, although to keep things from getting spoilery, the less said about him the better.

One thing worth noting if how J.J Abrams has tailored his style to fit the STAR WARS format, with little in the way of lens flares and all the classic STAR WARS visuals intact, including plenty of wipes, and some interesting 3D FX. John Williams is back scoring but to my ears the soundtrack seemed to rely less on new themes than on the classics – perhaps giving fans what they want.

So far, I haven’t touched-on our returning heroes at all, and if there’s anything STAR WARS fans have been hungry for, it’s been the opportunity to see their old favorites in action. Most of them are back although it’s really only Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Chewie (Peter Mayhew) who get a significant amount of screen time (but luckily Ford and Carrie Fisher as ex-princess/now-General Leia get a few key scenes together). Ford, for all his reluctance over the years to embrace Han, seems to be having a blast and is exactly how you remember him, with age having not toned him down very much. Ford looks great and gets tons of action, and it’s admittedly a thrill to watch him pilot the Millennium Falcon or blast Stormtroopers alongside Chewbacca.

Being so heavily anticipated, it’s hard to really look at THE FORCE AWAKENS in a totally impartial way, as for many of us STAR WARS is related to our earliest cinematic experiences. Certainly, that’s what kicked-off a life-long love of film for me, and you can’t under-estimate the power of nostalgia. While I don’t think THE FORCE AWKENS is perfect, to me it was a very nostalgic ride and at times it almost made me feel like I did as a kid watching these movies on CBS/FOX VHS tapes. It’s not a perfect film but it’s far superior to all of the prequels and exactly the movie fans have been waiting the last thirty years for. It definitely kicks-off a new franchise that should both please veteran fans and appeal to a whole new audience, and it’s hard not to walk out of this and not be excited to see what else the new team at Lucasfilm has in store for us.

9/10 - Amazing, see it more times, hehehe

One question, though!!

SPOILERS AHEAD!!

When the Starkiller base fires and destroys those planets, one of those is Coruscant, isn't it? General Hux says they "attacked the heart of the Republic", and one of the destruction scenes shows what looks like Coruscant.

It was good

But it did feel like a "Disney-fied" Episode IV. Just a newer model of an old classic, so to speak. Good to have Star Wars back though, let's see where Episode 8 takes us, especially after that ending. 8/10

NO SPOILERS

Hey everyone - some troll posted a HUGE spoiler in this talkback last night. It was removed quickly but my heartfelt apologies to anyone who stumbled upon it before seeing the movie. It's pretty terrible that someone would so actively try to spoil this for fans. Please everyone - NO SPOILERS in the talkbacks - although I'm sure 99.999% of you would never post them anyways.

Very Disappointing

Sorry guys, I know I am going to be unpopular with this opinion but this is what I felt.
Personally I would have asked for my money back had it not been for the performance of Adam Driver. He was the only thing keeping me from walking out as his scenes are the more professional and mature scenes of the lot. The story was essentially a rehashed carbon copy of what we have had before, which also makes it highly predictable. The circumstantial plot devices are either to pay homage or lazily

I feel insulted as a movie goer that Disney think they can palm off the same story. I knew there were going to be similarities but not to that extent
10/10 for acting (by Adam driver)
10/10 for practical and cgi effects
2/10 for story.

It's good not great. And once the dust settles I think fans will start finding all the plot holes etc to complain about and because we need to keep things spoiler free unfortunately I can't point to certain specifics I'd like to.

Just got back from seeing it and Half of me loved it, half of me thought it was disappointing. I'll need another viewing to know for sure. It's very similar to A New Hope, but don't worry it's definitely better than the prequels.
What's great: Han & Chewie, Kylo Ren, the practical effects, the newcomers
Not so great: The score, Phasma, final aerial battle, Lack of screen time for certain originals.
But hey, it's 4am here in Wales. Maybe I'll feel different after watching again tomorrow.

I 100% agree, I feel as disappointed as I do in terms of liking it. And at the moment I like it but don't love it. I think it's a solid 7/10 but just too many plot similarities to previous films and lack of character development etc
I think Rian's Ep VIII will be the knock out one.

Good review, sounds like a winner.
Will be tough to judge for a couple of weeks, way too many comments & reviews sound like they could've been written before the person saw the film. Likely some bad comments done the same way.

9/10 for me

Was everything I hoped it would be and loved every second of it. More or less a perfect Star Wars film. Funny but still had stakes, great action, character moments, actors and so on. Harrison Ford really looked like he loved being there and was awesome. Kylo Ren was also a especially great villain. Almost everyone cheered and claped their hands when the movie was over (never happens here in Sweden :)) Time will tell where I will rank it but probably as the third best film (which says something

Were Im coming from: One of those who really like the original trilogy and have fond memories of them from my childhood (seing them for the first time at the cinema with my dad in remastered versions...), but Im still not the biggest fanboy that cant see any flaws with them (not that there are many). What Im trying to say is that I think I think I can be more or less objective even though episode IV-VI means much for me.

This is exactly the news that I wanted to hear about this movie. I never expected it to be perfect, none of the rest of JJ's films are. I always said that if he at least does as good as he did with his first Star Trek, I'd be happy. Well, it seems like he's done it plus some :) Coming from a lifelong SW fan, we are lucky to have been given this holiday gift from Disney and co.

No matter the reviews, I am still head over heels excited for this film.

Let me just say this. I have seen criticisms about the new characters maybe feeling rushed, but let's think about this. Anyone who follows this series of movies is not in a vacuum and looks at the big 3 (Han, Luke, and Leia) through all three movies. We have a whole new trilogy to flush out their full stories. I feel like it is unfair to say that we don't know enough, because we have only seen 1/3 of their on screen

Meh, too early for Ep. 8 buzz, and I've no idea what Rogue One is, so it's all good for now.

I'm a bit surprised this is getting an 8. But to Chris' credit he did identify a few things that he thought either hindered or took away from the film. So perhaps an 8 is a fair score. Considering I was always a "C"/"B-" student, an 8/10 seems like a decent film to me.

That being said, I find the critiquing of the plot to be a bit unfair. Has anyone actually gone back and watched Episode 4 recently? And I mean watch it without fanboy goggles on too. It's really not the most elaborate

It's really not the most elaborate plot: Introduced to heroes/villains, heroes go to rescue the princess, heroes fight and destroy the villain. Not very complicated and pretty minor plot twist with Obi Wan getting killed by Vader. I feel that for the first film in an expected trilogy we shouldn't be expecting something really complicated. Seems to fit the bill for the Star Wars saga.

Episode 4 is a very flawed film that deservedly gets a break because of how groundbreaking it was and because Lucas managed to put what was at the time very good special effects with very low budget.

In other words, A New Hope was the little guy that could. The Force Awakens isn't that.

Glad to read Ford gets his own ample amount of screen time. He's the character I'm looking forward to most out of the old cast returning.

Agreed! Han is easily my favourite character out of the Star Wars universe. But I'm probably more excited at this point to see Luke on screen again. Only because he has been so absent from the marketing for the film that my interest is piqued.

I'm pretty sure Man of Steel got a 9/10 on here when it was released. 8? Hmm... Maybe a case of expectations being too high. 8 is still a good score, guess I was just expecting that 9 for close to perfect. I love the originals but I'm in no way a Star Wars aficionado. I think I'm gonna love this flick. Solid review, Chris. Interested to see what JimmyO has to say.

Like I said below, whenever I'm curious about a film I check out Rotten Tomatoes. Not the overall score (which is really subjective), but the average critic score (which is far more of an accurate reflection). What is surprising is that this movie is coming in at an 8.0 right now, which is really high for that site. This is the first time I can think of that IGN and JoBlo aren't significantly higher than the critic average on RT.

I don't know what that means, but it's interesting.

It has an 8.0 critic review average nationwide. Not sure where you've been reading reviews, but that's astonishingly high for a sci-fi film.

I'm pretty sure there is no mention because there is a press embargo on this film. Which is why the review is so vague and spoiler free. Chris makes a point to only comment on the aspects of the film we're familiar with from the trailers/marketing. I feel like any mention of Luke would mean a huge trailer and possible break of the non-disclosure agreement. Just hold your breath and go see it so you know for sure. Don't jump to conclusions based on an early review, you'd be selling yourself

Even though you hope for the best movie ever made its great to see all the positive reviews that says that its a great film, just not a masterpiece. No film can live up the the hype this film has/had. Will be seing it in less then 3 hours and I haven't been as excided since I queued for 5 hours to see episode 1 (we all know how that went tought).

I'm really glad the reviews have been good (not like I wasn't going to see it anyway), but IGN and JoBlo both gave it very good (but not superb) scores. That's weird because they are both normally very high for movies (I want to say Godzilla got an 8.8 or 9 on IGN), but when I flipped over to RT, it was at 100% after 57 reviews (not surprising), but with an 8.5 critic score, which is really high.

I can't remember the last time both sites were in the middle of the pack on a sci-fi film.

Good Stuff

Let's be honest here, J.J's done 3 obvious things right
1. Practical effects- The prequels were clustered with horrible CGI which ultimately took us out of the movie. The sets look real, and the CGI very minimal (or not easily detected) so it gives it that "real" look we all loved from the originals.
2. Original actors--this is a no-brainer, we're getting the big 3, Han Solo, Leia, and Skywalker.
3. John Williams original score---throw in the the classic theme songs in any scene and

So to conclude, you throw in practical, real sets and effects, with the original cast, AND the epic soundtrack, and you got yourselves a bunch of pleased fans, we all knew the plot was gonna be thin, its NOSTALGIA that we're all headed to go see, and I think they're keeping things very similar to the original star wars movie, good call.
Oh and P.S, Chris Brumbray clearly did not like this movie that much and you can tell he's let down, but you knew he was gonna give an 8 or higher, cuz well, hes a bandwagon jumper.

100% agree

8/10 in my books too
It is impossible not to love this movie as it is far Superior to all the prequels, and how it is respectfull to the tone of the 1st trilogy.... But, when i watched the movie, I was wondering how much my judgement was biased by the nostalgia effect... you want so much to love this movie that you forget the flaws. Definitaly, JJ did a great job, he paid respect to the originals movies, shared the same vibe, the prequels seemed to me like an alternate universe (mainly because
