Review: Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch
Mar. 24, 2011by:
4 10

PLOT : A young girl (Emily Browning) is institutionalized by her wicked stepfather, and due to undergo a lobotomy in five days at the hands of the “High Roller” (Jon Hamm). In order to escape her fate, she, and her fellow mental patients (Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Jamie Chung, & Vanessa Hudgens) plunge into a world of fantasy. They are guided by a mysterious old sage (Scott Glenn) through a series of adventures, where they must obtain five elements needed to obtain their freedom.

REVIEW: If ever there was a film that showed just how misguided it can be to declare a director a genius on the basis of one hit movie, SUCKER PUNCH is that film. The passion project of Zack Snyder, who had Hollywood studios all but declaring him the next Stanley Kubrick after the success of 300, SUCKER PUNCH is an incredible mess that plays more like an adolescent fanboy’s wet dream come to life rather than an actual film.

Before I’m pegged as a Snyder-hater, I should mention that I enjoyed his DAWN OF THE DEAD remake (which was a film that NEVER should have been good, but succeeded well beyond anyone’s expectations), loved 300 and even really enjoyed his take on WATCHMAN. However, he still needs to produce a lot more quality work before he can be called a visionary and SUCKER PUNCH is bad enough that had he not wisely signed on to SUPERMAN prior to this opening, might have derailed his career before it really had the chance to take off.

The film this really reminds me of is Richard Kelly’s SOUTHLAND TALES in that it’s another film that probably made sense to its director, but no one else. In order to cover for a plot that doesn’t make a lick of sense, he gets lots of fancy visual stimuli, a bunch of over the top set pieces, and an excess of music that clumsily tries to hammer home the subtext of each and every scene. For instance, the film starts with a cover of The Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams" which kicks off the fantasy aspect of the film and, in another scene, while on a quest for magical fire-producing stones (don’t ask), we get another bad cover of Jefferson Airplane’s "White Rabbit." Oh yeah and slow-motion. We get a HELL of a lot of slo-mo.

Of course, people are bound to say SUCKER PUNCH is experimental as a way of justifying the messy narrative, but I don’t buy it. However, I’ve liked other films that had even messier storylines. The reason I hated SUCKER PUNCH so much was that at no point in the film did any of the female characters feel like anything more than Snyder’s manga/animé fetish come to life. We get a never-ending series of ridiculously over the top action scenes which feature our heroines fighting robots, slaying dragons and fighting in WWII trenches, all while decked out in the tightest, sexiest, barely there outfits you can imagine. I shouldn’t complain, as all the actresses are gorgeous, but when you fetishize a character, you stop relating to them on a human level if they’re objectified. This is the same problem you had with films like AEON FLUX, the CHARLIE’S ANGELS franchise, and the Jolie TOMB RAIDER films. Heck, one might even claim 300 did the same thing for men but at least the source material by Frank Miller was strong.

The dialogue and plot doesn’t help, as this plays out like your standard Roger Corman-style “women-in-prison” pic, minus the graphic sex and given a $100 million budget. This is a shame though, as there’s some real talent in the cast. Emily Browning was too much of a blank slate for me to be impressed, while Chung and Hudgens are essentially bit players. However, I was really taken with Abbie Cornish and Jena Malone both of whom are good enough that you really wish the film was a little less ludicrous, and more invested in its characters. They play sisters, with Cornish being the tough older one. The fact that Cornish is a shade older than the other actresses helps give her a bit of authority, but Cornish really deserves a better vehicle for her talents than this. As for Malone, wow, she’s really grown into a beautiful woman (reminding me a bit like a young Meg Ryan), and whatever warmth or humanity the film ever has is solely thanks to her and Cornish.

Sadly, they’re not nearly enough to make SUCKER PUNCH interesting as anything other than a novelty. SUCKER PUNCH is a cartoon brought to life, with cardboard characters, and wild overacting (with Oscar Isaac and Carla Gugino being the two big culprits). Only Jon Hamm manages to escape with his dignity intact, but that’s mainly due to the fact that he’s hardly in it. I still probably would give SUCKER PUNCH a pass if it was at least interesting visually, but this never looks like anything more than a video game come to life. That said I have no doubt that SUCKER PUNCH will appeal to some, and might pick up a cult following in a few years (similar to something like REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA). If anything, SUCKER PUNCH made me very depressed, as Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures has taken a big risk in producing this film, but I wish they had taken a gamble with something more interesting.

I could talk all day about what is wrong with this complete monstrosity of a film but I shant bore you all with my inane rantings. This film sucked big time. One of the worst films I have ever seen. Your 4/10 seems very, very generous. I am very worried about the new Superman film now and I think we should all start getting a bit nervous now.

you nailed it with your review! there was potential - but nothing really came of it other than flashy visuals. it was a fun movie that i enjoyed, but a little more substance would've been nice.

side-note: i actually enjoyed Southland Tales

I really liked the film. It is nowhere near as complicated as everyone says, and not even comparable to the piece of shit that was "Southland Tales". The action scenes were spectacular, and there was not as much slow-mo as there was in "300". It entertained me from beginning to end and its nice to see an original movie with original ideas in theaters. Plus it has everything you need in a movie; dragons, zombies, hot chicks, guns, explosions and robots. I have a feeling this will become a cult

Could Have Been Good

I was so psyched for this movie, but it was pretty bad. The dialogue was way too cheesy and forward. The music was terrible. And this had to be the first time that I was really bored seeing a movie that i was soooo excited to see. Very disappointed, but i'm still looking forward to superman

Calm down...

Just saw it on Imax...ummm, yeah its pretty but I found it boring and someone take slo-mo away from Zach for bit...talk about overkill. I see some people are getting all butthurt over Chris' review. You guys do realize it's just his opinion, feel free to have your own. Those trying to say he is "wrong" about his review are being pretty silly.

I CAN'T BELIEVE so many of you don't understand that a review is AN OPINION! You know, I always get shit when I pan one of these movies, which everyone says they love sigh unseen. Then, years later- the tide turns. Got so much hate mail over panning WOLVERINE, TERMINATOR: SALVATION, etc. Disagree wit me- who cares? Go see the movie yourself and make up your own mind.

Yeah, I think this movie is very dependant on expectations. If you want to be visually entertained it'll fit the bill, if you want an in depth movie look elsewhere.
Not that thats a bad thing, make you're choice. Plenty of people waste their time of films way worse than this and enjoy themselves.

I think the problem is that a lot of people went in to it wanting to be entertained in a visually stunning way and weren't. And I'm not talking about high brow, pseudo intellectuals, but your average movie fan. I mean its one thing to be visually entertaining but its a movie, its still got to have a narrative no matter how simple, that flows and has things happen for a reason, not just poofs out of thin air because something cool needs to happen now. Quentin Tarrantino makes fun films with cool

Maybe the movie works with the sound off?

Honestly, I was just bored throughout this whole movie. I was REALLY excited for it too - I've never seen a Zack Snyder film that I didn't love.

The problem was there didn't feel like there was any context to what was going on. It felt like it tried too hard and it ended up just being a collection of random video game cut scenes. I just couldn't get into it no matter how much I wanted to.

You know it may just be me, but a few years ago this site would have given his movie a full 10. I swear, lately this site has been such an collective of movie tight asses. Fetish or not?

This truly is a manga/animé fetish come to life...but I think that is the point. This movie already has a cult following in most anime/manga/(hentai lol) fans and takes this art form to a new level in visual entertainment. The story isn't great, the acting isn't award worthy and is full of your typical movie cliches, but at the end of the day, this is supposed to be...PAYBACK FOR TWILIGHT!!!
Stupid Twihard sub culture.

I just can't believe you guys

I'm so disappointed with all of you. Honestly, I stepped out of this movie with huge grin on my face. I loved it. My wife loved it. My 13-Year-Old son about shit himself he loved it so much. Listening to him reminded me of when my dad took me to see Superman II and I wouldn't shut up about how cool it was. I still have the scar on my head from flying into my bedrail that night.

When I started going to these movie sites way back in the day when Aintitcool.com was featured in Newsweek prior to the Phantom Menace premiering, I loved getting all the latest and greatest of movie news. But, lately, you all have let this movie "Geek" persona take over. How dare you thumb your nose at this movie. This is what you guys have been fighting for. The visuals are unparalled to anything I've seen. The story was fine. Quite overreacting.
Between you and some of the dork wannabe movie gurus at Aintitcool, you have completely missed the point of why we go to the movies.
Sucker Punch was a fucking great way to spend a Friday night. Go see it. The rest of the wank jobs can go jerk off to Orson Welles or Darren Aronknfskistupidass for all I care.

Hold up a minute..

In reading some of the comments I gotta ask: When did the criteria for films suddenly become the two party system of either Oscar winning material or Dumb Eye Candy?

Eye candy doesn't always have to be dumb with narrative dead ends. If comic book films can now be made that deal with heavy weight themes and attention paid to the character's growth while simultaneously incorporating kick ass action sequences in between, then there's no excuse for this film to hide behind.

Its freaking Pan's

Its freaking Pan's Labyrinth with an orgy of genre mashups. There's already an example to reference off of and give it some real authentic emotional core while balancing it with awesome action.

Let this be a lesson to Zack Snyder: Never, ever get involved in the writing process. Leave that to the people called writers. Just make it look pretty Zack, make it look pretty.

3 stars

I liked Sucker Punch. No, it's not perfect. The narrative was weak, the non-fantasy scenes were slow moving and Oscar Isaac was a dull villain. I did really like the visuals and action sequences though. The basic story was itself was fine. And I couldn't agree more that Abbie Cornish was the strongest of the 5 girls, though the rest were just fine as eye candy and looked good in action. 3 stars.

Great Film

Just got home from seeing it. I loved it, visually stunning, plot makes perfect sense for anybody who can comprehend anything beyond spongebob squarepants. The idea of escaping from hardship and pain in your mind is similar to the reason we go to the movies at all. Just go see it for yourself. Open your mind, open your eyes. Think outside the box and appreciate it for everything it is.

Well, I didn't hate it nearly as much as you, Chris, but I still couldn't recommend it. I thought the visuals went a long way towards helping the film. It's just a shame that the plot and characters were nearly non-existent. about what I expected

This storyline is ludicrious and the visuals so over the top that you cant be connected. This is where a great screenplay comes in play. This was made for the spectacle not the story. Any movie with Glenn in it is gonna have bad acting, its what he does now. Not surprising in the least, since its all action in the dreams there isnt a sense of dread, since none of its real. Gonna lose money big time. This blog shows how people get attached to something and cant let go no matter how much evidence

But...

Everything negative you said about this movie is why I want to see. Loud music, check, hot sexy women check, dragons, and nazi check...

Every movie is not going to be King's Speech or Black Swan. A-Team was a pretty pointless movie, nothing new about it, but It was mindless fun, and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Some movies are made to be Oscar winners and some movies are made for entertainment. Its 22 degrees and snowing here in Syracuse, NY, I just want some entertainment right

I caught this last night and was a impressed but did anyone else feel like the action "scenes" were a little too similar? The first one was great but then it just degenerated into "chicks with guns go from point A to point B obliterating bad guys". The bulk of the movie was fantastic but those sequences just seemed like action porn - which I'm ALL FOR - but it just needed some variety. Or something. Maybe I'm just crazy. The soundtrack was fuckin' amazing though.

Just take it for what it is....

Chris dude, i don't agree with your review. Just take this movie for what it is a bombardment of Visual Eye Candy and a fun movie... Zack is an awesome director, he has his own style of directing, which not just i but alot of people like.... Enjoy man, don't be so harsh ;)

I liked it

I guess you missed alot of the trick camera visuals and mirror effects. This movie has the generic effects that Watchmen and LOTR had but this also uses a stylized cinematography that impressed the hell out of me. The storyline is actally pretty good when you dont try to play out the fantasy as reality. And the characters are one dimentional but they all are suppose to combine as one character so it works. And you didnt even mention Scott Glenn.

First off, Watchmen was declared un-filmable by some really big directors and Zack pulled it off and the movie, as the source material, is brilliant. 300 was a great adaptation as well, and all we do is complain how movies change this and that from the comics, and we finally get a guy who is willing to put these comics to the screen with a fair amount of accuracy. Then he makes this movie, which looks fun. Why is this bad? The trailers did not make this out to be a drama for fuck sakes. God

I am married and have been for years and I have had sex A LOT, so pinning this for “guys who don’t get laid” movie doesn’t make sense. I work hard at my job to support my family and sometimes I want to have a good time. PS – I think 2001 is the best film ever made and I also read books – you know, those things that have only words and no pictures. But I take every movie for what it is. This is a fun movie to watch. Period. You want drama? Go watch Inherit the Wind, or 12 Angry Men – those movies kick ass in the drama department.

I'm sorry, but I don't give a free pass to a movie with a messy plot, and bad writing, characters, and acting...ever.

I enjoy good MOVIES. I like a mindless action flick as much as the next guy (or any genre for that matter), but they have to be done right.

there are more and more movies that are directed towards fanboys that continue to suck and no one sees (Snakes on a Plane, Scott Pilgrim) which tells me that though fanboys are overly knowledgeable about comics, movies, and assanine tarantino dialogue, their taste in entertainment is overrated and generally sucks to the average movie goer

"SUCKER PUNCH is a cartoon brought to life, with cardboard characters, and wild overacting" That's what I was afraid of and clearly what it looks like in the trailer. Can't say I'm going to rush to see this crap.

I've never seen more people excited over a movie with..

no plot, bland characters, terrible acting, dull writing, and mind numbingly uninspired action sequences.

I guess nerds enjoy hot girls fighting. And then we complain when Hollywood churns out more shit movies.

While I am glad my expectations have been brought down a bit, I still have no regrets about going into this. Snyder wanted to make a film that had every male, geek fantasy conceived, so he strung them together loosely with a very thing thread and needle called plot and character. Anyone who saw more than this in the trailer shouldn't be too disappointed by what they see on screen, as it was to be expected. Look, Snyder IS flash over substance, as evidenced by every other film. But I count

Irregardless of the fact that the script, story, and acting are terrible, sometimes a film simply needs to be series of awesome action scenes to be worth it's weight in entertainment.

Not defending this film, haven't seen it yet, but this review isn't anything I didn't expect it to be, which tells me I will probably enjoy this film. In fact, there were some key points made that my expectations are entirely based on, in all it's fan-boy wetdream, video gamey goodness.

Sounds like the summer is starting early!

I think that this movie falls into the category of brainless popcorn movie. Think Transformers, Fast and Furious or Friday The 13th. You know from the trailer what you're getting when you go in. An hour and a half of special effects and no story. Anybody that reviews this film expecting more than that will obviously be disappointed.

What a shame.

It always seems 9 times out of 10 that when visuals are such a huge part of the film, they forget about the writing. I've never understood that. Don't the directors, producers, & such realize that if it's just visuals people will watch it once & never again? Snyder is an OK director, but w/only 4 films under his belt he's hardly anything special yet. I thought "Dawn" was pretty good, enjoyed "300" & enjoyed "Watchmen" more the 2nd time around. I will see this eventually to look @ all the

I'm betting @ least 60%. It seems that script writers just aren't very good anymore. Maybe if they paid them more they'd try a little harder.

Let's be fair to the screenwriters - the films they write are run through the mill by producers who want to have input or want to create something more commercial and viable, and so pass on the script to other writers. Screenwriters are as good - and bad - as ever, but producers are far less likely to trust the story they've created. This is why a lot of films feel pandering and disjointed.

I haven't walked out a film in years.

But I walked out of Sucker Punch last night. A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Cezar - there's plenty of what you're looking for, not to worry. If you want any sort of drama, conflict or interesting characters with your visuals, though, it's not for you.

I will enjoy this because I was expecting nothing more than slick visuals. People might ask me "then why spend your hard earned money to go watch something that sometimes has no story at all?". The answer is simple: "I'm no movie critic. Sometimes my friend, I just want to watch shit blow up...in slo-fucking-motion."

This movie looks so bad. And not "so bad it's good", so bad it's bad. Did the people behind it really thought pretty girls, guns, robots and monsters would sell tickets. Well I for one hope not!
This looks like something a 7 year old kid would have written then got polished by a 15 year old. Grow up Hollywood. Fanboys (and girls) doesn't = retards.

Well, the trailer is visually interesting, so I'm curious as to how the flick on IMAX isn't. And since you gave Call of Duty vs Halo....ERRRRR Battle: Los Angeles a 7/10, I think the video game comment sort of fails. To each his own. I'll shall pass my own judgement.

Snyder...ugh...

I'm not shocked at all that this is getting a horrid review. It looks like the rest of the garbage this "director" has done...or at least most of it. Enough with the fucking slo-mo and green screen CGI garbage already! I haven't seen this movie and I've already seen it since this is all Snyder knows how to do. Sure, the chicks look hot, but that doesn't not make a garbage movie.

1941 wasn't a mess like this movie. I love 1941 as well, especially in a post 9/11 world where you really get that sense of paranoia. But comparing Sucker Punch to something like that isn't even a fair comparison...for Sucker Punch.

You're probably right. Still, I haven't seen it yet and am doing my best to stay open-minded.

I was trying more to cast doubt on the whole "Snyder is a one-note hack" conclusion. While he could very well be just that, he might eventually surprise us, too.

All of those are director passion projects which I loved as well.

I'm still interested in seeing it. I just want to see some entertaining fantasy action for two hours, so if it delivers on that, I'll be happy.

Zack Snyder is a wildly uneven director, as far as I'm concerned (loved 300, thought Watchmen was a mess). Maybe that's why I'm still looking forward to Sucker Punch-- as someone without very high expectations for this to be a real "quality" movie, there's less room for disappointment.

Completely agree with Chris' review. I saw it last night as well, and wrote up my review if anyone's interested.

Disapponted...

to see such negative review. I'm probably going to check this out just because I had high hopes for it being a fun time at the movies.

If you've seen the progression AFTER Dawn of the Dead, you'll know most of his movies have that "I was previously a TV Commercial Director" feeling. That is his schtick. Style over substance. I like that he embraces his successful style.

I still want to see the movie so very much!! I really don't care about the thinness of the characters in this movie, I know what I'm going for: hot babes, guns, zombie nazis, dragons, samurai robots, slo-mo action scenes, gorgeous CG AND great music (I heard the sountrack yesterday, it's amazing).

Zach Snyder knows his audience. He's never really made anything, with the exception of maybe Watchmen, that could be considered high caliber, Oscar worthy material. He just makes batshit crazy action flicks with awesome visual flair. That's why they picked him for Superman.

Let me put it this way, if someone gave me $100 million and let me make whatever movie I wanted, it would look a hell of a lot more like Sucker Punch than The English Patient.

This review made me want to see this movie more. I love Southland Tales AND Anime. And I'm sorry but every major hollywood blockbuster is a live action cartoon, which is fine by me because I love cartoons as well. I actually hated 300, so as much distance Snyder gets from that I'm cool. It sounds like someone just needed some pot before they saw this movie and they wouldn't have came up with such a cranky review.

Nothing wrong with smoking before a movie - but if you HAVE to be high to enjoy it, then it ain't that good of a movie.

Thank god someone has finally called out the ridiculous Snyder love. This guy is the most overrated director working right now. I liked dawn of the dead, but 300 is literally a shot by shot recreation of the graphic novel as with Watchmen. The only thing Snyder added to those movies that wasn't already there from the novels is slow motion.

LMAO if you really think Watchmen is a shot by shot recreation of the comic you have no idea what you are talking about. Many things were changed and only about 70% of the story actually made it into the film. That is not a shot by shot recreation.

Jheeeze

When did Roger Ebert start writing for Joblo? ":SUCKER PUNCH is a cartoon brought to life, with cardboard characters, and wild overacting" and "I still probably would give SUCKER PUNCH a pass if it was at least interesting visually, but this never looks like anything more than a video game come to life." Seriously? Who the hell ever claimed it would be anything different? I'm pretty sure Snyder didn't. And just cause some ass hat critics praised him as the next Kubrick cause of the success of

This is the dumbest comment on a review I think I've ever read. A critic says the movie sucked and your defending the movie by claiming the director never intended it to be good in the first place?

This is the dumbest reply to a reply to a review i think i've ever read. No what i was saying that the movie was never marketed as anything more then a pretty and loud way to spend some time. At no point did anyone say it was gonna make the Oscars or anything like that so the idea that it should be judged in the same terms as those that deserve to goto the Oscars is fucking retarted.

It's like saying a Civic is not or less of a car just cause it's not on thge same stadards of a Mustang or a

No, pag is right. Sucker Punch did not necessarily look like it would be devoid of substance, and reviewing it as such is not the same as expecting it to have been Citezen Kane. Not everyone had the same expectations as you; others are allowed to hope for more than you assumed it to be, and are allowed to give it a (pretty polite) 4 out of 10 for only succeeding so well at being the movie they sincerely saw potential for. And Roger Ebert owns your face.

Rodger Ebert could yuse my face, heh. sry for that one just had to. This is not a debate on a persons opinion or expectation of a film. Of course the reviewer has his own and is entitled to it. But if you're going to make comments like how idiot critics gave Snyder too much praise early on as a point of downside to another movie he made then you're digging your own hole.

Maybe ppl should go into a movie with such high expectations and then they wouldn't be so disappointed. That might sound

I'm probably going to get slack for this, but I really didn't care for 300 or the Watchmen. I'm also a lifelong Superman fan, and I am a tad worried that he's directing the new movie.

300 does not hold up well to repeat viewings for me. I'll bet I'd like Watchmen better if I did wath it again, and in expanded version. I hear DOTD is good, but Snyder is a music video director who loves his slo-mo a little too much.

That's the third negative review I read...still I will definitely see it on the big screen, if only to see the dragon. And Abbie Cornish.

Yeah to tell ya the truth the CGI for the Dragon wasn't all that great. It was good but when compared to the CGI quality of the rest of the film it's not that good.

This is so gonna be a love it or hate it flick. I personally really dug it on my end; review up tomorrow on AITH. Good review Chris, even though I disagree with ya. To each his own :)

I dislike how nowadays people think that every movie a director makes is the end-all be-all definition of his career. If Sucker Punch is a mess, then it's a mess but... he always labeled it a fun "pet" project. I give him props for doing what he always wanted to do.

I'll take a fun visual acid trip over a shitty sequel.
