Review: Green Lantern

Jun. 15, 2011by: JimmyO

PLOT: When a hot shot test pilot is granted a green ring that gives him super powers, he must choose whether or not to accept its calling. His choice is made clear when he is forced to conjure up the strength to fight two enemies, one looking for power, the other searching to destroy everything in its path. All this, and he has a little bit of time for romance with the lovely Blake Lively it must be tough to be Ryan Reynolds.

REVIEW: With the summer of super heroes in full swing, DC Comics GREEN LANTERN finally arrives this Friday at a theatre near you. With its occasionally spectacular CG effects and Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordon - a test pilot who has been granted a mystical ring - it mightve been a thrilling summer adventure. In this Martin Campbell (GOLDENEYE, CASINO ROYALE) directed feature, there are certainly a few thrills, yet it is bogged down by a script that features forced sentiment, goofy dialogue and a less than thrilling cast of characters to root for. There's a tongue-in-cheek vibe that works occasionally as Lantern seems to have more in common with superhero flicks like FLASH GORDON or the original SUPERMAN and this is slightly refreshing; if only it had a better balance of humor and adventure.

The story begins as a deadly super villain named Parallax (Clancy Brown) is accidentally released after being imprisoned by the Guardians of the Universe. The Guardians must send all their best men in the Green Lantern Corps to destroy this monster before he can cause too much damage. When one of the members of this elite group of alien supermen is sent crashing down to earth after a vicious attack from Parallax, he must grant his ring to whomever the ring chooses. Its choice happens to be Hal Jordan. For fans of the comic, it is clear that the story deviates from the original source material, yet the idea still works and most will be able to overcome the differences.

Once Hal Jordan realizes the power hes been given, the film introduces another enemy in the form of scientist Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard). Hammonds father is the very powerful, Senator Hammond (Tim Robbins), and you can bet that the family bond between the two is beyond warped. Hector is a brilliant man who makes contact with a yellow substance that runs through Parallax ultimately giving him superpowers. His transformation into villain turns Hector into a doppelganger for Eric Stoltz' "Rocky" Dennis in the 1985 feature MASK (only not so lovable). However, the extremely talented Sarsgaard makes it work.

While this may seem overly complicated for those not familiar with the comic books, the screenwriters did an adequate job to simplify the story. Nevertheless it may even be too basic, as it relies on a few moments of forced sentimentality, including a useless nephew character that shows up early on to inspire Jordan, but the inspirational child is never even mentioned again. Even the relationship between Jordan and love interest Carol Ferris (Blake Lively) feels forced and uninteresting. As likable as the characters are, they are never really given much life aside from what the cast manages to put into it. Thankfully, Lively, Sarsgaard and Mark Strong as Sinestro are good enough to enliven these two dimensional characters into something of interest.

As far as a leading man is concerned, Ryan Reynolds is quite capable as Hal Jordan. He has the self-assured, witty persona that is easy to root for. His take on Jordan is, for the most part, a solid performance. There are times however that it is difficult to get past the fact that it is Ryan Reynolds. When things get really scary Parallax is a pretty creepy heap of flesh that expands in size the more power he gathers there is something missing from Reynolds that lessened the excitement factor. He is almost too charismatic and self-assured to really express the fear that this nemesis thrives on. Whether this was Reynolds performance or just the balancing of CG to live actor, it hampers the intergalactic joy of it all.

GREEN LANTERN is not the end all be all of superhero films, however it will bode well for audiences tired of the brooding caped crusader, those who are looking for a little more camp with their comic flick. While the story can be interesting, the script itself is uneven and all over the place without ever stirring up the thrill factor. The effects are generally very good, however there are moments that fail to impress, especially when Parallax expands into one giant mess of a monster the beast is creepy, especially when you get a sense of the evil inside. As far as the actors go, Lively, Sarsgaard and Strong give solid performances. Reynolds is good throughout most of his evil-bashing duties, yet sometimes he could let a little bit of vulnerability shine through his CG suit. Maybe the sequel will be able to conjure up a little bit more dazzle with its emerald rays of light.

I agree with Ebert

I liked this better than Thor but not as much as X-Men, X2 or First Class.

Gonna check this out over the weekend. Hopefully Warners will see a return from this in order to green light a sequel.

I love how a broken story here (which I don't deny) is classified as dog crap, but a broken story some place else like The Tree of Life that is considered art.

First hint that this was gonna be a bad movie was the early footage. First confirmation that this was gonna be a bad movie was the director saying he didnt want to be involved in any sequels weeks before the film comes out.

Bad review

Ill wait to see chris brumbray and roger everts review. I dont like this guys reviews no offense. Plus it seems like ever since this film started the joblo staff has done all they can to bash it. I still think this film will turn out better than captain america. At least this film has a unique superhero story.

Jimmyo's reviews are usually spot on and just cause you dont agree with the reviewer doesnt automaticlly make the review bad. Its actually quite a good review on stating what he didnt/did like about the film. I do also would like to read another review from someone else at joblo. Green Lantern is a movie Ive been waiting for for years and I'm just soo excited it got made. To me the movie is probably gonna split down 50/50 between people who like it and dont. I have my ticket for tonights show

What a shame. I wasn't too excited, but the Wonder Con extended trailer got me into seeing it. All of the bad reviews are throwing me back in the side of not caring. Guess I'll go see X Men instead!

Thor was a crappy chick flick and Im sorry but super8 was no goonies or E.T. like they said there was no reason for the alien and why did it take him so long to build that stupid ass ship?

The suit itself was a bad sign. I don't care if it's supposed to be made of pure energy...pure energy and bad CGI are 2 different things.

been hearing allot of bad stuff about Green Lantern but I'll still check it out this friday even though I have my own reservations about it, the trailers give off a Fantastic Four vibe and as much as I like Ryan Reynolds I never thought this was the right part for him, here's hoping I'll be prooved wrong.

Uh-oh!

I'm a HUGE fan of DC comics, and I am still hoping that this GL movie can help lead to a full-on JLA movie, but I'm seeing some horrible reviews. I'm still buying a ticket on Friday night for GL, and at the end of the day, the only opinion that should matter is my own and not some reviewer that sits in his parent's basement writing crappy reviews.

Ah, generalizations are so easy to make aren't they? Ironically enough, many of us here at JoBlo not only don't live in their parents basement but actually have families of our own. Whether you think our reviews are crappy or not is entirely up to you. Personally, I don't read articles from sources I don't respect. However, you are right that ultimately the only opinion that really matters to you is yours. Hope you dig the film.

Awesome review JimmyO and I'm looking forward to spending a couple hours of my weekend checking the movie out. I'm sure it's no game changer but I was a huge fan of what Reynolds showed in 'Buried' and if anything, a storm of green CG will hopefully keep me satisfied after what many are claiming to be an uneven ride. Thanks to the Joblo staff for always bringing me back to the site and offering sound opinions, regardless of whether or not readers always agree. And let's not give basements a bad

4/10

Saw it too, and let me say: YEESH. Green Lantern turned out to be, as I was saying since day one, a mess of a movie.

The special effects are very uneven and the GL suits (and aliens) all look so fake, it takes away a lot from this movie.

See it on cheap Tuesdays (or whatever night movies are cheaper in your city) if you must see it at all.

looking forward to it

It looks like a good, light, fun popcorn flick and anyone going in expecting anything different or getting mad it's something different should be slapped in the face.

Can't wait to see it, it's been too long since a ride like this (it seems)!

Unlike TooCool_2012, I've come to not trust reviews by most JoBlo reviewers as of late. However, JimmyO is not one of those reviewers I doubt as he has always been spot on where his reviews are concerned which leaves me a bit depressed regarding this review because I was hoping for more.

It seems JimmyO found to be wrong everything I feared would be wrong with this version of GL.

Too bad about the goofy dialogue and 2 dimensional characters, sounds like i'ts kind of fun but could have been a lot better. Another sterilized Hollywood product. I just knew Vaughn would make the only superfilm with some depth and intelligence.

Totally agree on Vaughn, First Class was all class. Here's hoping for more of it as a new series, and maybe some more present day x-men action? I'd like to see Hugh Jackman back in a worthwhile modern X-Men.

Looks okay. I'd be surprised to see it do well at the box office. Kind of expecting Captain America to be similarly disappointing too. These are hard properties to adapt and to sell to general audiences.

I knew it

The trailers just showed me what kind of movie this is. One trailer has it as campy and fun. Another trailer as it as being a serious movie. It really wasn't too hard to realize how "uneven" the movie was going to be. I'm waiting until video. Reynolds should have done Flash, instead.

Damn it!

But lets be honest, the flick never had a chance. First of, the competition this summer is to big and I guess some geeks are already fed up with comic book movies. Then the marketing campaign and trailers were pretty much lame and underwhelming. Guess they producers tried to lure the "Iron Man"-fans into this one with the overall campy tone and Ryan Reynold starring. But the "GL"-universe is to complex and rich for this kind of storytelling and Reynolds is no Robert Downey Jr.!

about what i expected

I like Reynolds but he will never be a star, too much self awareness for that to ever happen. You know a movie is bad when reviews for it are blocked as was the case for this movie. Nothing about this movie seemed good from the door, as other reviews are crushing it.

I haven't expected much from this movie since the first set of posters that came out over a year ago. I also thought it looked like the most homoerotic movie of all time (and not just because of the tights - a lonley man walking down the road, gets asked to join a league of other men on a planet full of magic and vibrant colors and big tombs that look like standup dildos). I think the real hardcore comic book fans (aka 30 year old virgins) were the only people that were really excited for this.

This homoerotic stuff you make up says a lot more about you than the movie! also your description shows that you have no real clue about the movie, because there are so many mistakes (there are female members too, it is not magic, only one "vibrant color" which is green and for the dildos, I think everybody sees what they want to see...)

is this the best you guys can do? Yeah, the movie looked really gay to me. Too much of a fantasy with Batman & Robin-like cinematography (GL actually looks like Robin from the Shumaker movies). For some bizarre reason, you guys actually got offended & decide to defend a movie you havent even seen by taking pot shots. Not my fault you guys have insecurities and take offense to comments on a movie website. If thats what you guys do for a lving then you're going to have your hands full on

Not my fault you guys have insecurities and take offense to comments on a movie website. If thats what you guys do for a lving then you're going to have your hands full on rottentomatoes, because its getting a lot of shitty reviews.

There are just too many logical fallacies to count in your rebut. Then again, it's clear a degenerate dogmatist/homophobe like yourself can't think beyond your base observations. Good luck with your prejudice, it'll get your far ;)

wow. great comeback! you really shot down my views with legit oppositional stances - "you're wrong," "you're a homophobe,""you're too stupid" I wish i knew more people over the age of 6 that ended sentences with a winking smiley face.

Special pleading. Confirmation bias. Straw man. All fallacies commited in your juvenile retorts. Try taking a few critical thinking courses. It may help you form a legitimate opinion not grounded in misguided slander. Might give your grammar and vocabulary that extra push as well. Wink, wink ;)

TeamZissou, you're starting to sound like a dickhead. Your argument is invalid. He stated his opinion and you were too easily offended.

Hrm, I question the integrity of anyone who supports the opinion "this movie looks gay." Congrats Greenescreen, you've just joined the very low ranks of slimbo.

I'm clearly dealing with intellectual heavyweights. Tell you what, go net yourself a job editorializing movie reviews with 'reasons' like "I no like Green Lantern cuz it's filled with big gay dildo tombs" and then you'll be vindicated. Cheers!

Should deliver the summer goods

Now that the expectations have leveled out for some (or been confirmed for others) after reading our trusty JimmyO review, we can let the pre-release maligning settle. I look forward to seeing it Saturday morning, should be a blast! Given the potential of the Green Lantern universe since it literally has the universe at its disposal, I'm hoping it's a success and births a franchise. However that $300M budget is going to be a tough climb (at least domestically). And right after I enjoy a Green

I kind of expected this. The trailer didn't really impress me and the DC universe doesn't seem to be quite as movie-friendly. I'll probably wait on this one.

The thing I keep hearing about Green Lantern in general, the recent comics and animated films spurred a "Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings" mythology. This was played out during the Blackest Night saga and I hoped that FEELING would have translated to film more than a specific storyline. That being said, I figured the hardest part of this movie would be keeping it cohesive through-out. I know WB and DC needed a tent pole release this year but production did seem pretty rushed for the sheer size

Very good review!

I was somehow expecting JoBlo to bash this, but this is a very well written objective review!
This review is supporting what I am expecting from this and I am looking forward seeing the movie myself.

It wouldn't be a good review if the reviewer didn't like it and bashed it? He'd just be sharing his OPINION.

I didn't say that! I only said I thought they would bash it...This review isn't all positive, but it is a good review because it is comprehensible.

seeing this tonight

Got sneak peak tickets for this tonight. This is the only way i would see this movie as i'm not really interested in DC characters for the most part. I'm more looking to see how they usethe CG as this is a character that really could not be done before in conventional cinema. I actually read up on the character in wikipedia to familiarize myself and while GL is interesting it's more taht it was a sumarizing of even that have taken place over years of comics that made it interesting as opposed

I don't think, outside of the origins of Sups and Batman, can DC movies stick to the stories in the comics. DC continuiuty is such a joke that thy've had major events to consolidate it all cause so many writers have had different takes on the characters over the decades and Gl is no excpetion. For example the weakness to Yellow seems so lame but it's been retcon'd really well and the weakness makes total sense now!

DC is actually rebooting their "entire" universe in September of this year with 42 titles returning to issue #1. I can't help but believe that the infinite Earths and writer continuity battles have a lot to do with that decision.

The sequel? What sequel? This is gonna tank big time considering the whopping costs of this, the reviews, and an almost unknown hero for the majority of the movie going masses! Sequel, I don't think so!

I probably doesn't deserve a sequel, but Warner Brothers already greenlit a sequel to begin filming soon. At least, that was the report a while back.

Well, 6/10 isn't bad. I was expecting worse. Still, I went into X-Men: First Class didn't expect it to be that good and I was wrong. I really hope Green Lantern turn out good.

Your joking right? 6/10 is bad...that's 60%! If you were to give it a grade it would FAIL!
