Review: The Hangover Part III

May. 23, 2013by: Chris Bumbray

PLOT: Two years after their wild night in Bangkok, the Wolfpack is back. Alan (Zach Galifianakis) has been off his meds for six months and is running wild. After an intervention, Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha) manage to convince him to go the rehab, but on the way to the clinic they're attacked by a mobster named Marshall (John Goodman) who kidnaps Doug and threatens to kill him unless the guys can find the elusive Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong), who's just broken out of prison.

REVIEW: THE HANGOVER series seems like a textbook example of why some films just don't need sequels. Sure, the first one was great, and to be fair, even the first sequel wasn't that bad. It was stale, and had a ridiculously recycled premise, but at least it was funny. THE HANGOVER PART 3 is many things, but funny is not one of them.

In some ways, this latest film seems like an honest effort by director Todd Phillips to finally put a definitive end to a series that's been the victim of it's own success. Too bad this definitive end means making a movie that's so bad absolutely no one will have any desire to see a Part 4. I'll give Phillips credit in that he, along with co-screenwriter Craig Mazin, made a somewhat brave choice by not actually including any kind of hangover this time out. PART 3 is just as different as Phillips has claimed, but it's too bad that the biggest difference seems to be that unlike the other two, this isn't funny.

Heck, I don't even know if I'd call this a comedy. There are precious few laughs, most of which are earned in throwaway bits by Galifianakis and – in one admittedly funny scene – a cameoing Melissa McCarthy. Otherwise, THE HANGOVER PART 3 is, believe it or not, a pretty dull crime/heist movie. Most of the running time is eaten up by a lengthy caper involving Chow and a mansion in Tijuana, while the film comes to an inevitable conclusion in Vegas, which at least allows us a brief reunion with Heather Graham's stripper with a heart of gold- Jade, and her now four-year-old son, Tyler (or rather Carlos), played by the baby from the first film, Grant Holmquist.

Probably the most puzzling thing about THE HANGOVER PART 3 is how Ed Helms and Bradley Cooper, who are now much bigger stars than they were in the first film, have almost nothing to do. Helms does his usual nervous schtick (he's not the newly minted badass the end of 2 seemed to suggest), while Cooper basically does nothing, and plays it almost entirely straight. The focus is squarely on Galifianakis, and Ken Jeong. I like Jeong, but in these movies a little of him goes a long way, but he's front and centre throughout, and is often more annoying than funny. John Goodman classes things up a bit as Marshall, but he has even less to do here than Paul Giamatti in PART 2.

And, while the first two films pushed boundaries in terms of taste and outrageousness, this outing is ultra-tame, with only the giraffe decapitation from the trailers pushing any buttons. The only really good thing about HANGOVER 3 is that Phillips still has a strong sense of style, with the lensing by DP Lawrence Sher being particularly sharp, and the soundtrack selections being well-chosen as usual. I think if Phillips ever decided to stretch beyond comedy, he'd probably surprise a lot of people, and the guy's got style to burn, which is obvious even when the movie's at it's worst.

It's too bad that THE HANGOVER series is coming to such an anti-climatic end, but this is a series that has just completely petered out and needs to stop. This isn't a particularly awful film, but it's a very boring one and a waste of a whole lot of talent. Even compared to HANGOVER PART 2, this is a major disappointment.

Extra Tidbit: The only really edgy joke happens midway through the closing credits, and suggests that depending on the box office take, this "final" outing may not be as final as they say.

I agree with this rating and review. Hangover III was mediocre and the least satisfying of the series hands down.

Just Stupid...

The Hangover is the perfect example of a movie that didn't need a sequel. And this is coming from a guy that didn't like the first one.

I really liked it.

Maybe my expectations were tempered because of all the negative press the movie has been getting, but I really enjoyed this one. It had some great laughs (no idea where this whole "this is more of a thriller than a comedy" crap comes from), some great heart, and tied in perfectly with the other two movies. It even had a few great little surprises!

I adored the first Hangover, then really loved Hangover Part II, so maybe my opinion will be a little different here (seems Hangover Part II is not exactly a crowd-pleaser), but I thought this was a very worthy entry in the trilogy, and closes it out in a great way.

As for the credits scene hinting at a new movie, I doubt it. I won't say anything else to avoid spoilers, but I think it's supposed to just... it's supposed to keep us talking about and coming up with great theories. That's all. This has been confirmed by everyone that it is the finale, and there are even a couple self-referential jokes to suggest as such as well. They will not make another movie, at least not with Todd Philips or any of the cast.

Of course it could see new light on direct-to-DVD, a la American Pie, but as far as the well-made, all-star well-known cast, great production values Hangover movies go, this will be the finale. Guaranteed.

At least in the parts that aren't the most funny (or lack laughs 100%), they are well-directed, and I actually kind of think Todd should direct a real thriller next. The majority of serious scenes in this movie were extremely well-made. I was shocked by the negative reception of this movie, as it's not bad at all...

And I was scared that Chow would be what ruined the entire film, as I have always thought him to be one of the weaker elements of this series, but he turned out to be a great character. He never does dramatic acting, but he has some great comedic dialogue and I actually enjoyed him in this much more than the last couple.

Fun movie but not memorable.

Personally I liked the movie. It was a nice change than the regular hangover movie, i wasn't really annoyed by Ken Jeong (surprisingly) and Galifianakis was great as the main focus of this one. The laughs were there, not so much as a physical aspect as the first or second movie, but moreso on the "that's really weird/awkward" side of comedy (allen and tyler/carlos' scene). However, I felt myself walking out of the movie liking it, but not remembering any truly memorable scenes like in the first

However, I felt myself walking out of the movie liking it, but not remembering any truly memorable scenes like in the first two. Sure the story had more of a heist/action movie feel to it, but I had a lot of fun with it none the less. I'd rather see Todd Phillips try and take this film into new territories rather than the same ol bits.
It had a fitting end to the story of the Wolfpack and I hope this is the end of the series (there's really no other place to take it). Ultimately, I'll probably remember these 3 movies as one great, original concept, the second completely copying that concept bit for bit, and the third trying something new and coming out with a great story. 7/10

Only gripe i can make is that I could have used more John Goodman, and his Marshall character seemed like a watered down version of Walter from Big Lebowski and I think could have really made a bigger impact if he got to go more over the top with the character.

It's always good to remind everyone of our basic rule here on JoBlo.com and that is RESPECT toward your fellow posters. Two members were obviously going out of their way to insult/put down another member in this thread, and for that, they have been banned. Our rules are extremely simple, people: talk movies and don't bash each other. That's pretty much it. If you can't handle that, this place isn't for you. I Enjoyed It

Precisely because I've never been the biggest fan of THE HANGOVER movies. They're overrated and yes I agree this one isn't that funny but the plot was entertaining and there were some memorable moments. I really hope this is the last one, though.

.......sigh......

I'm sure NO ONE is surprised by this......when are people going to stop paying for garbage??? Apparently, its takes two sequels of a very good original movie for the public to catch on that the studio is making pure garbage and they know it....funny thing is everyone else knows it too but it keeps on making money....let me tell you...Part 2 didn't get my money and neither will 3. A movie like this is a waste of energy, space, time, money, alcohol, weed, drugs, talent, Mike Tyson, tatoos,

Not surprising. I can count on one hand how many "trilogies" where parts 2&3 were as good as the original.

what does it all mean?

Ultimately I'm judging this movie for myself when I see it later today. Chris good review, but I'm sorry can't trust your judgement on movies. You gave Hangover 2 a 7/10, which I thought was a strong overestimate, the movie sucked and did everything the first one did beat for beat. and totally unrelated but you gave Evil Dead an 8/10 and personally I thought it was the biggest piece of shit so far this year. So by logic of you not caring for this movie, chances are I'm gonna like it.

So what if The Soloist likes lots of movies. That's why we're all here isn't it? Can't we all just get along. There is too much bad shit going on in the world like soldiers getting their heads chopped off etc. lets all chill and talk movies.
Part 3 = 5/10 shit I was hoping it'd be a bit better than that. I loved the first, enjoyed the 2nd. Sad to hear 3 is pretty crappy. Can anyone tell me what part 2 got a score out of so as to make a judgement call?

The_Soloist

All you guys are making The_Soloist out to be somewhat of a celebrity on JoBlo. I didn't even know who this kid was before everyone started talking about him. If your plan was to discredit him, you're doing it wrong. Just ignore him or thumb him down if you don't like him. Don't create fake profiles to get his goat, it makes you seem like YOU have no life. Anyway, sad about Hangover III. Will have to rent it at home with a large pizza.

The_Soloist is an Enigma

Just the fact that The_Soloist has Followers and Detractors is fucking hilarious to me. I don't get mad when he saids everything is great. That doesn't bother me. It's when he saids shit like"This is going to be my favorite movie 5 years from now, because Kirk Cameron will be in it". That's the comic fan in me. But I am serious about knowing the motives of this mysterious SOLOIST. Are they pure and genuine or are they Malicious.

The Soloist

The Soloist is probably a kid in Jr High, so i dont really mess with him, i did once, but i havent said anything negative to him since. He likes the Green Lantern movie when many of us dont, Cant bust some kids chops cuz he isnt as "seasoned" as many of us. As far as the Hangover 3 was concerned, wasnt something I had planned to see anyways, the trailers didnt do anything for me anyways.

I was cautiously optimistic about this movie. I was just telling my wife I was hoping for John Goodman to steal the show so I'm kinda bummed. Guess we're seeing Fast and Furious 6 this weekend after all.

Ah, that sucks! I was hoping this would be a great conclusion to these movies. Granted I really have to agree that this is a movie that is the victim of it's own success and textbook example of a movie that did not need a sequel. But regardless, my interest is piqued and I still want to see this movie. Now I just need to decide if I'm willing to go to the theatre or wait for Netflix to see it.
And everyone, give The_Soloist a break, the dude's not hurting anyone.

I've been hearing that it isn't a comedy. Which actually has my interest.

As it reminds me of back when The Hangover first came out, during interviews they were saying Zach Galifianakis had the idea to do like a No Country For Old Men type drama.

I liked the first movie well enough, but the second was abysmal (though all my friends seemed to love it). I laughed once during the whole thing at a throwaway line by Jeffrey Tambor. Suffice to say I'm in no rush to go see Part III. The sad thing is, this movie is going to make boatloads of cash, and while Phillips and the cast probably won't return for a Part 4, I can see Warner Bros. going down the American Pie and Dukes of Hazard road and producing a line of straight to video cheapie

I thought the trailer was pretty funny. So what happened...all the comedic moments of this apparent bore fest were packed into the trailer? Tune into the movie...to find out! I know I will...and given my easy to please nature, I'll probably end up enjoying it (though it takes a seriously bore fest type of movie - koff, koff, Green Lantern, koff, koff - to get me to say a movie was poor).

usually, when a movie of this anticipated sze avoids all critics and bloggers and early showings and ANYTHING, its a sign the studio knows its bad. i agree with the review here. Chow is like ghost pepper hot sauce. interesting when dribbled here and there, but one ounce too much and youre left wondering why the fuck you even went there in the first place.

Oh for petes sake get a grip on yourself. Dont act all high and mighty as if you are above everyone. Bullying and joking around are two distinctly different things. Most everyone downvotes the soloist but he continues to post positively. You are clearly part of the pro PC movement. Same people who want video games taxes because of violence. Same people who complain about Alice Eve being in her underwear in star trek. Thumbs down to you good sir. Thumbs up to the soloist for keeping positive.

Bullying? Wow really? I'm offended that you would even say that. You need to take your negativity elsewhere.

Here's a solution.

One day, this movie will be on HBO. And on that day I'll go "Didn't Bumbray give this a measly 5?" and want to flip the channel. But I won't. Because my mind will say "Hey, why not check it out and see if it really is THAT bad?". And I will proceed to watch it in its entirety, expectations low as f*ck. Once it's done, I'll go "That wasn't so bad!", and wouldn't have enjoyed what was doomed to be a sh*tty movie. Voila! A way to enjoy a crap film.

Or I'll just hate it, in which case who cares.

The_Soloist

I could just tell from the trailer the trailer that this was better than the first. Altho I wish they had been roofied again. That the best part of the movies. This is definitely the movie of the summer.

Better than Hangover 1 and 2!

I have no idea what movie you guys just saw, but BOY was this movie GREAT. It's better than the first Hangover by FAR. I found Kim Jeong even funnier in this movie, than he was in Part 2, but not quite as funny as he was in Transformers 3, which is his best performance to date! I completely LoL'd from start to finish. I loved how the writers gave Bradley Cooper alot more to work with comedy wise in this. He was a great wisecracker! The movie also dared to be different in many areas, which

Jeong wasn't funny in the slightest he was a psychopath!!! In the first two movies they portray him as a mid level gangster with a unique sense of humor, this movie portrayed him as a bloodthirsty international criminal who can see all the angles?!? Wtf is funny about that? Cooper played it straight the whole movie with a couple of comedic parts. He'll there were times I thought he was going to have an emotional breakdown and cry it out with everyone. Wtf!!!??!!! Hangover 4?!?! Using the word

Oh, I get it. You're making fun of the nicest commenter on this site, the one everybody downvotes because he seems to have a generally great attitude and is never to rude to anyone. Bravo.

Sparkholiday, I get what you're saying, and even I've exchanged playful jabs with The_Soloist, but mind you, he's replied to people who criticize him with tasteless pre-teen-esque jokes about their mothers. So, to say that he's never rude to anyone isn't exactly the case.

To 'Soloist_Troll' and 'Hudson1138' - talk about beating a dead horse to death, plus it was never funny to begin with. Please don't try and turn the strikebacks into the IMDB message board. You are taking the piss of this site when you play with your immature antics. Try to be better than that and maybe discuss the movies on hand.

In all honestly, after seeing the second one, I didn't even have to see part 3 to tell you it was going to suck. Thanks for taking the bullet for us on this one.

Yeah, I expected this. Didn't see the sequel as I thought the original was decent (not as great as people make it out to be though). This never warranted a series to me and I agree that this is one of those trilogies that let it's success get to it's head. Just about everyone involved is so much bigger than this series now and should move on to bigger, better things.

I have been reading most of the reviews & it kinda makes me sad, since the first Hangover was one of the most funny & original comedies in a long time. Yes I get the 2nd one was a rehash but I still found to be funny. I will still be seeing this movie, but it seems the bad taste from part 2 is why people don't like part 3.

Actually part II had nothing to do with me not liking part III. I didn't enjoy nor did I dislike the second hangover movie. It had its parts where it was funny but at the end what did it all matter, we learned our lesson about being in the wolf pack while standing up for ourselves while being with our friends. The third is just tripe all around. It had no reason to even exist.

Fine 5 outa 10 too. Godammit. Worst of the series but having said that I still enjoyed it and will def buy bluray. Cause it's still the wolfpack. It's an interesting take on the series for sure. I have a feeling it will grow on me more on bluray at home

I don't think this movie will ever grow on me. I really wanted to like it and kept my mind open the whole way, but this movie was not a comedy. It had some comedic elements with a couple of cartoon characters played by actors, but this film is not a comedy and has very little to no redeeming qualities about it.

Agree 100%

Just got back from seeing it and I agree with the 5/10. I swear I thought Cooper was giving a dramatic performance throughout while dipping his toe in the comedy pool. I thought his character was a mirror of his real self by just wanting to get the fuck out of this franchise. Helms was forgettable and sleepwalking his way through the movie. Goodman had nothing to do. No Tyson cameo. It just felt very uninspired. And the precredits scene was for shock value and fan service just for the fuck of

Loved the first one, was indifferent to the second one, while just being bored by the third one. Save you money and preorder your ticket for Man of Steel like I should've. Oh yea Justin Bartha was in the movie for a couple of minutes and said some dialogue almost forgot about him just like Philips.

Also what the fuck is up with comedy movies and learning a lesson at the end of it?!?! I mean I'm watching this movie to escape from the real world momentarily, u don't want to get hit upon the head multiple times and the postman from Dont Be A Menace comes by and screams "message!"

I was hoping John Goodman would have a lot more to do than Paul Giamatti in Part 2. Thanks for pointing out that this isn't the case. I totally agree about Ken Jeong's shtick getting really annoying. It's a case of "Breakout Character-itis" - the producers see that people react well to a character's first appearance, and then ramp the screen time up to unbearable levels, not knowing audiences liked the character in a minor part and nothing more.
