Review: The Lone Ranger

Jul. 2, 2013by: Chris Bumbray

PLOT: John Reid (Armie Hammer), a tenderfoot lawyer educated in the east, is left for dead by a gang of outlaws. Donning a leather mask to hide his identity, he teams up with a Native American warrior named Tonto (Johnny Depp) to bring the bloodthirsty gang to justice.

REVIEW: Well, its finally here. THE LONE RANGER is a movie weve all been tracking since it was announced Johnny Depp would be reteaming with his PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN director Gore Verbinski in a new, politically correct reimaging of the classic character. This isnt the first time Hollywood has tried this. In 1981, the big-budget LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER hit the silver screen, with the results being so bad that the lead actor, Klinton Spilsbury, was never heard from again. Given the $200 million dollar budget, Disney, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are obviously hoping this will be the start of a new billion dollar franchise. But is THE LONE RANGER worth all the effort?

Having caught the film a few weeks ago at a very early press screening, I was lucky enough to see it at a point where any kind of buzz- positive or negative- hadnt really kicked in yet. Given that the trailers promised a kind of western PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, with Johnny Depp playing a very loopy, comical version of Tonto, I didnt exactly expect THE LONE RANGER to be any kind of conventional western, but I was at least hoping it would be more like the first PIRATES, and less like the sequels.

For the first half hour, I was pretty pleased by what I was seeing. The film starts with an elderly Tonto recounting his adventures to a youngster wearing a Lone Ranger mask. Depps performance is typical of his work lately, meaning its very eccentric and totally played for laughs. Still, for the first half hour that was fine, with it starting off as a relatively cool western with Reids heroic brother, Dan (memorably played by James Badge Dale) taking one of the baddies, Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner) to prison on board a train that comes under attack by Butchs gang. The first action sequence is pretty thrilling, especially when paired with Hans Zimmers Ennio Morricone-style spaghetti western score (complete with a cool pan flute theme for Tonto). For a while I was really thinking Verbinski had nailed it.

Too bad that once the train crashes at the end of the extended, thirty minutelong sequence, the film goes with it, and we still have over two hours to go. The big problem with THE LONE RANGER is with the titular character, who, like Tonto, is played strictly for laughs by star Armie Hammer. Youd think that over the course of the film Hammers tenderfoot would gradually turn into a hero worthy of his mask, but he plays it so over-the-top and jokey that he seems to have been inspired by Johnny Depps performance from SLEEPY HOLLOW. As such, we get him shrieking and panicking through the repetitive action sequences (nearly all of them somehow involving trains and huge amounts of CGI). I couldnt help but think that Badge Dales character should have become the Lone Ranger instead. Hammers a good actor, but his Lone Ranger is the wimpiest action hero in recent memory.

Even that wouldnt be a huge problem is Depps Tonto was able to pick up the slack, but Depp gets so carried away in his characters eccentricities that hes impossible to take seriously. Thus, you get a wimpy action hero, paired with a sidekick that seems permanently stoned on peyote- feeding the dead bird he wears on his head- and spends most of his time goofing around with their iconic white horse, Silver, whos initially supposed to be some kind of native spirit animal, but soon gets into all kinds of horse-hijinks, like drinking a tub of whisky (a drunk horse- har-har-har!!!).

The villains arent much better. Tom Wilkinson plays the main baddie, being a railroad representative working on some kind of land-grab scheme thats so dull I can hardly remember what it was all about. William Fichtner livens things up as the sadistic Cavendish, who has a taste for human flesh, being shown eating a human heart (LONE RANGER is pretty gruesome for a PG-13, and more violent than WORLD WAR Z), with it also suggested that he once dined on the leg of Helena Bonham Carters dancehall proprietress (who acts like she wandered out of a Tim Burton movie). Barry Pepper also shows up late in the game as an initially conflicted Calvary officer (with Custer-style flowing yellow locks) who quickly turns into a crazy, two-pistol shooting psychopath without any good explanation. Newcomer Ruth Wilson plays Reids love interest, but doesnt have much to do other than looking longingly at Hammer and find herself in distress.

In the end, THE LONE RANGER ended up being just another overlong, bombastic would-be epic, more like the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN sequels and PRINCE OF PERSIA than the franchise-starter its meant to be. Depps Tonto is occasionally amusing, and the movie at least looks good, thanks to the cinematography by Bojan Bazelli. But outside the first thirty minutes I was bored, and the 150 minute running time feels downright oppressive. This is long and dull. I expect that even if it ends up being a hit, no one will be clamoring for a sequel any time soon. Then again, despite only the first film being good, were about to get a fifth PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN- so maybe there will be a LONE RANGER 2 after all.

No shocker that it sucks. They should have gone with a more realistic approach to the character. The Lone Ranger is the Superman of the wild west, in that he knows the difference between right and wrong, and he fights for justice against all wrong doing. He just doesn't have all the fancy powers. They could have done something with the tone of a Unforgiven or a 310 to Yuma and while it wouldnt have made huge bank, at least it could have been a quality film.

I never thought The Lone Ranger would be Oscar-worthy but at least I hoped it would be an entertaining flick like Pirates. Even if it's bad, I love western and adventure movies, so I have to see it...

I love Depp in the right role. The first Pirates, Blow, Fear & Loathing, etc. Recently- he's been hit and miss. I thought he was fun in Dark Shadows even if the movie was bleh. I didn't care for any of the Pirates sequels. Rum Diaries was so-so. But when he's good, he's great.

Depp is a bit over-rated. He's great in Blow and the 1st Pirates.. i also enjoy Secret Window. But nothing else he has done really stands out for me.

Chris, you and I usually agree but not this time. I'll agree that Hammer's take is a little wimpy (of course he's just playing it as it's written), but that is a minor complaint at most. The film looks amazing, the action is solid (if not particularly groundbreaking), and the story flows smoothly for such a long film. Complaining that the tone of the film and the take on the characters isn't exactly like the tv show is like complaining about how different 21 Jump Street was from its source

This is a fun movie folks, and like much of Verbinski's work it is perfect for the big screen. Give it a shot.

You have a golden oppurinty to make a great movie out of a classic TV show...but instead you hire Johnny Deep who really doesnt compare to the actor who played Tonto in the TV show.. You make Arnie Hammer play a wimpy Lone Ranger and you have over the top scenes and a lack luster story. Yeah, its great that you finally brought the Lone Ranger to the big screen, but it would have been nice to stay closer to the source material.

As soon as I saw the headline

I knew that this review was written by C. Bumbray. He does not give good reviews to these types of films. That being said, I did not read this review. I'm really looking forward to this film and probably will not agree with him. But I do respect a writers opinion. He's entitled to that much.

Very Disappointed

I was a huge Lone Ranger fan as a child and still have a copy of The Legend of the Lone Ranger on VHS. I had been excited about this movie since it was announced. a POTC style Lone Ranger with a silly Depp Tonto sounds outstanding. But once the first trailer hit with a fearful and cowardly Lone Ranger, I began to get worried, and to confirm that he is a wimp throughout makes me lose all interest. Butch Cavendish being a cannibal is the final nail in the coffin. I hope this is an bomb of

That's too bad, I was hoping that this would be something like the first Pirates as well. I think Disney is really playing to the kids here, if not for the extreme violence. Wondering if this will be a hit for Disney (my guess is yes) or another John Carter (which was actually pretty good). Guess I will be seeing Despicable Me 2 instead.

I used to love watching the old Lone Ranger TV shows. Hell, I even met the original Lone Ranger actor Clayton Moore and have his autograph. But ever since I saw the first trailer for the movie I couldn't get excited about it. Too much Pirates of the Caribbean influence perhaps.

I don't know anyone that was looking forward to seeing this. Every time I was at the movies and the trailer came on people were laughing at it for all of the wrong reasons. Looks like nothing other than a stupid, bloated mess.

This will be an interesting case to see if it is even possible for these type of movies to fail anymore, or if the price structure is such that they are a guaranteed success no matter how bad or how disliked? I truly hope not, as this type of garbage will be all we

hmm.

Not seen the movie. But I found the pain with godzilla and first hulk movie. Both the leads were so whimpy you lose respect for the story. Not that the story and supporting characters were any better. While I did enjoy Green Hornet it was way too comical.

When I heard Depp would be Tonto, I thought "hmm, interesting choice but fun..guess they'll need an equally big name to play the Ranger or Tonto will steal the movie". Well, sorry Armie...you were NOT a good fit. I'll never understand this poor casting of an iconic character. Depp chewing up scenery in Pirates is one thing..it's expected. I'm not sure Armie was a poor fit, he has a very heroic look to him and is a decent actor. This sounds more like a problem with the script and acting not letting him live up to his potential. It's also a shame that he is supposed to play the lead character, but is playing second fiddle to Depp.

I agree Hammer has the look and is an ok actor but he lacks the big star status to match Depp. I can't imagine they didn't think "hey, we need a star as big as Depp for the lead." I'm just saying I don't think Hammer was right for this particular role. I guess Depps antics were gonna steal the movie anyway so it's probably a mute point.

What's particularly a bummer is that Depp and Hammer look great together. You've got Depp in this Indian msyticism getup that could've had the potential for a dark and complex character. Then you got Hammer, who's 6'5" and gorgeous, and somehow can't be taken seriously as the Lone Ranger. He's BUILT like a hero, so why can't his character be one? To me, this just seems like Pirates with Johnny as an "Injun." What a bummer...

WTF?

A $200 million western? What were they thinking? No Western has grossed more than $185 million, and only 8 westerns has grossed more than $100 million. Oh I guess this is also another case of the advertising selling us the wrong movie too. The trailers show Hammer playing a serious Lone Ranget, not some Barney Fife idiot.

I just saw this and liked it a little better than Bumbray did, but fully agree with a lot of the points raised in this review. This is clearly Johnny Depp's show and he is pretty fun to watch, but it seems the filmmakers don't have a lot of faith in (or respect for, even) their title character, who makes a mess of pretty much everything. Perhaps Reids incompetence in this one can be attributed to his rookie status (though its more likely a result of Depp exercising his clout as executive

And yeah, for something that's being marketed as a Disney family film, it has a surprisingly high body count and gets pretty brutal and graphic in parts. It's kinda like how Pirates 3 opened with a little boy getting hanged. I think that's the way Verbinksi rolls, but it doesn't jibe well with the nostalgic way the character of the Lone Ranger is perceived.

Film looked good, so I was expecting a more positive review. But again I'm not surprised at some of the problems that are listed in the review about the film.

It really doesnt look good.
You must have bad taste in movies if this appealed to you. Unless your a teenage girl or under 12 or someone who thinks depps better films are sweeny Todd and the pirates franchise. Im pretty sure that is the target audience for this, morons or kids. Which are you?

@filmbuff, I'm pretty sure the only people who flame people for regular ass posts are either trolls or sad, pathetic losers. Which are you?

That's too bad. I was looking forward to this one. I was hoping Depp and Verbinski would be able to recapture some of that Pirates 1 magic, but that must be like the lightening in a bottle cliche.
