Review: Thor

Thor
4 years agoby:
8 10

PLOT: Arrogant warrior Thor (Chris Hemsworth), heir to the throne of Asgard, is cast out of his realm by his father, King Odin (Anthony Hopkins). He's banished to Earth, where he meets a young physicist, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). While getting used to his new earthly surroundings, his duplicitous brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), now King of Asgard, puts a plan in motion to ensure his brother never returns to claim his rightful throne.

REVIEW: THOR is everything you could possibly want from a summer superhero movie. It's slickly directed, sharply written (with a surprising dose of humor injected) well acted by a fresh young cast, and most importantly, a total blast to watch.

Not being much of a comics guy, I had very little awareness of the THOR mythology walking in, but I've been a devoted viewer of the Marvel films since they were kicked off with IRON MAN.

My big complaint about IRON MAN 2 was that it felt pre-occupied with building up to THE AVENGERS, rather than being a solid IRON MAN film. Luckily, the good folks at Marvel seem to have learned from their mistake. To be sure, there's a lot of teasers and hints dropped throughout the film, and I have no doubt the events of THOR lead right into THE AVENGERS, but nevertheless, it's first and foremost a THOR movie, and an AVENGERS film second.

THOR kicks off on Asgard, with us being introduced to our arrogant hero, and his merry band of comrades, Lady Sif, & “The Warrior's 3”. I knew right off the bat that THOR was going to be exactly my idea of a good time, with the swashbuckling action being perfectly handled by Kenneth Branagh, who's proven to be a great choice to bring THOR to the big-screen. The chemistry between Thor, and his comrades is perfect, with each, despite limited screen-time, establishing themselves perfectly. For me, a special highlight was Josh Dallas, as the Errol Flynn-like Fandral, and Ray Stevenson, showing a flair for comedy as the glutenous Volstagg (the Porthos of the gang, which makes sense, as Stevenson actually IS Porthos in the new THREE MUSKETEERS movie coming out in a few months).

Once we get to Earth, THOR slows down a bit. Instead of bombarding the audience with more action, THOR almost becomes a fish-out-of-water comedy, with a good helping of romance thrown in. Imagine a superhero version of CROCODILE DUNDEE if you will. It's in these scenes where Hemsworth proves himself to have been an inspired choice to play Thor, with his comic timing being impeccable, and his chemistry with co-star Natalie Portman, strong. For Portman, this is a bit of a throw-away role compared to BLACK SWAN, but she gets enough good material to make it a worthwhile part.

After another half hour or so of character building, we're thrown right back into the action, with the villainous Loki (played by a menacing Tom Hiddleston, who'll be a major part of THE AVENGERS) sending an Asgardian robot to Earth to kill Thor. It all leads up to a climactic battle on Asgard, and it's rollicking good stuff. It runs a lean 112 minutes, which means it's not quite epic, but extremely fast-paced (without feeling too rushed mind you). Granted, some of the actors, like Rene Russo as Thor's mum, or Idris Elba, get limited screen time, but I imagine they'll be back in future THOR films. The film really revolves around Thor and Loki, which is as it should be. Anthony Hopkins is also quite good as Odin, with him playing it like Shakespeare (another reason Branagh was an ace choice). Another, less heralded, but quite effective aspect of THOR is the excellent score by Branagh regular, Patrick Doyle, which is without a doubt the best music we've had in a Marvel movie yet. He should definitely be brought back for THE AVENGERS.

My only problem with THOR was, once again, sub-par 3D. Obviously, this is another post-conversion job, and the 3D effects are lame. Worse, many of the nighttime scenes have not been color-graded for 3D, making them tough to decipher. This is one film where audiences would be well advised to opt for 2D if available.

Other than that, THOR's pretty much a perfect piece of summer fun, and has made me eager to see CAPTAIN AMERICA and THE AVENGERS. Of course, being part of the Marvel Universe, you should expect a couple of fun cameos. And- don't even think about leaving while the credits are rolling. Your patience will be well-rewarded.

Extra Tidbit: Between this and FAST FIVE, summer of 2011 is off to a great start! Fingers crossed the rest of the blockbusters don't disappoint.

It's been out in the UK now for two weeks, so I've caught it twice. The first showing was in 3D and it added nothing, but I loved the film. The 2nd time was in 2D, and I think without the tint of the glasses Asgard looked even better.

I loved the movie, brilliantly balanced, the humour wasn't overdone, the action was great, and it was a great reflection on the Thor comics I own and love. Can't wait to see Cap and the Avengers now.

I saw it in 2D so I didn't have any of Bumbray's issues. That said, I expected a longer ending finale. Also, the romance seemed rushed and unlikely given what little time the 2 actually had together.

Thor was always the film I was looking forward to when news broke of the crew handling it but as the trailers and marketing materials came out I became underwhelmed. Watched it anyway and I'm glad I did... it was definitely as good as I thought it could be. Hemsworth is incredibly well cast as Thor. Generally the rest of the casting worked with nobody being particularly bad.

I didn't like Ray Stevenson as Volstagg at all, but he was hardly in it anyway so it's all good.

The design of Asgard was excellent, with everything having a unique look. Heimdall absolutely rocked my world!

I also found the score immensely forgettable and the dutch tilts got a little bit much.

Either way, Captain America has a lot to live up to now...

Nope, I didn't read the review. I only saw the 8/10 score point and I haven't watched it yet. You guys wouldn't believe a very long line for buying Thor ticket at my local theatre.

Great Stuff! 9/10

Just got back from a midnight show, and have to say I'm very well pleased! Thor is great fun and very well adapted from the comics. Though it might not be for everyone, I think most fans of Thor and Marvel comics will appreciate this film a lot. And definitely one of the best (if not THE best) Marvel movie adaptions to date.

My only nit-pick would be the pacing. There's a lot of story that felt a little crammed, but not enough to ruin the movie.

Great acting, cool action, and Natalie

THOR is mighty

I had a blast with this movie. About the Darkness problem in 3D, it's far less flagrant in IMAX 3D, event the 3D is a bit better...

It was fun, but too much comedy

Let me put it this way: It was not choppy, was well-paced, and was action-packed. Chris Hemsworth is the perfect fit for Thor. Awesome casting. Loki is very cool. Visuals are superb. Apart from that, it's just a LOT of fun, but there's some weak writing here and there and the comic relief comes off as pure bullshit. It didn't have to be there and it watered-down the danger at hand. I would have loved for it to be longer to make it more epic, but this is Marvel, so a TDK-length flick is wishful

i liked the movie alot, but it really made me worry about this Marvel film universe. from iron man they seemed to keep the universe pretty grounded to reality, but Thor was just way too unrealistic. i mean, no astrophysicists look like natalie portman.

There was an episode of "Blind Date" where the hot girl was an actual rocket scientist, and the Ken-doll guy tried to ask her about her work but didn't understand a single word/concept. She made out with him in the hot tub (or pool) anyway since she's surrounded by brilliant scientists all day but I'm sure none of them look like this guy.

Saw it yesterday and it was awesome. The only downside to it was the romance. Way too much happened in such a short amount of time. From who are you to I love you eternally in about 10 mins. A little off. Otherwise fantastic. Plus a certain Avenger cameo made me so excited to see this new to the screen character in action in the Avengers.

I loved how Kat Dennings misprounced saying Mjolnir..because honestly who hasn't done that while reading the books..okay maybe just me..I think the only real problem I had with it was Loki didn't seem as menacing as he does in the comic books...but hopefully that will change for the Avengers..Great to see Clark Gregg get a meatier part also....I give it about a 6

3 and 1/2 stars

Just came from this and I really enjoyed Thor. A lot of fun and the Asgard design and FX were sumptuous to look at. Nice action, some fun references and overall just a good time at the movies. This review is pretty much dead on. I saw it in 2D so the 3D was not an issue. Fun!

Thor rocked.
But it seems the cool thing to do these days is bash the 3D conversion. But honestly, Thor's conversion work is some of the best out there. Yes, it would be preferable to shoot it in 3D, but Thor's 3D job was very well done.
I guess you gotta whine on about something, that's what the internet is for. Oh no's the image is a tiny bit darker, holy hell, I can't take it anymore, someone take my life, please, it's a little bit darker!!!!

AYE.

I would give it an 8.5. A very good (surprisingly good even) and entertaining movie. My only problems with it:
The final "battle" could have been a bit better, it kinda felt like the final battles in both Iron Man movies, too short, too easy and not enough emotion. And THOR's time as a "mortal", way too short, but given it's a 2h movie and not a 4h epic it still works out fine, not a problem but just sayin'.

As for Kat Dennings? Don't worry about that. She wasn't as annoying as I feared

One final thing, go see it in 2D. I saw it in both 2D and 3D and the 3D is really not good, but that shouldn't be a surprise I guess.

I loved Hemsworth as Thor, I loved the character Thor. But I did not like this film as a whole. It felt very rushed and just kinda thrown out there to introduce us to Thor for The Avengers movie. This should have been epic and it just wasn't. I was disappointed. With that being said.... I'm very, very excited to see Thor played by Hemsworth in The Avengers, cause again, he and that character rocked.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

The best part of Thor is the Asgard stuff after that it's just nods to Avenger related things. I thought the movie was extremely rushed, Thor is banished for two whole days and learns valuable lessons and falls madly in love with the first woman he sees. Yeah it's a comic book alright.

The 'climactic battle' is hardly a battle. The Destroyer is beaten easily (Mjolnir needs a nerf) and the fight between Thor and Loki didn't really do it for me.

"THOR almost becomes a fish-out-of-water comedy"; that, coupled with Kat Dennings's cheesy bullshit from the trailers is REALLY discouraging me from seeing this movie. Unless this humor has the same kind of wit and balance as Iron Man did, then calling this movie a "comedy" works against it.

Don't worry, those are Kat Dennings moments are very tiny bits, usually about two seconds each, and she has few of them. Thor doesn't have the same kind of wit, but shares some of the cockiness and arrogance of Tony Stark. In a more awkward kind of way, though, because he's out of his environment here on Earth. Don't worry, the movie rocks.
