Review: X-Men: First Class

Jun. 3, 2011by: Chris Bumbray

PLOT: It's 1962, and CIA agent Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) is on the trail of The Hellfire Club, a sinister organization run by Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) that's keen on igniting a nuclear war between the US and the Soviet Union. When she discovers that Shaw, and his henchwoman, Emma Frost (January Jones) seem to possess extraordinary powers, she's led to Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), who's only just begun to experiment with his own telekinetic ability. Under the employ of the CIA, Xavier and his sidekick Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) begin to round-up other mutants in the hope of stopping Shaw. These mutants include Eric Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender), a Holocaust survivor bent on avenging his family's murder at the hands of former Nazi Shaw.

REVIEW: Wow. That's the only word I can use to describe how I felt walking out of X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. As above-average as this summer has been for blockbusters (with FAST FIVE and THOR both being very solid films), X-MEN: FIRST CLASS has just come along and declared itself the new king of the Summer of 2011.

I almost can't believe how good it's ended up being. I've been extremely critical of 20th Century Fox over the last few years, with them having followed up Bryan Singer's great X2 with the atrocious X3, and WOLVERINE. I had just about given up hope for this franchise, but damn if Fox hasn't delivered a film that's right on-par with the still-great X2.

Turns out, Matthew Vaughn (who was once attached to an early version of X3), was the ideal choice to breathe some new life into the franchise (with Singer's help, who exec-produced, and also has a co-story credit). He brings the same energy and excitement he brought to STARDUST and KICK-ASS here, with us finally getting an X-MEN film that feels like a real grade A epic, and not something that fell off the assembly line, like the last two installments.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS takes us back to the beginning of the mythology, with us seeing Xavier before he was Professor X, still had a full head of hair, and wasn't confined to a wheelchair. As played by McAvoy, Xavier's a bit of a ladies man, using his psychic abilities to pick-up co-eds while doing his Doctorate, and being more or less satisfied living a quiet, scholarly life with his protege Raven (who, of course, becomes Mystique). McAvoy, while looking a lot different than Patrick Stewart, and being a lot randier, is still quite good in the part, and by the end he brings the same grace, and compassion to the role that Stewart did.

Running parallel to Xavier's storyline is Erik's, before he became Magneto. Here, he's still one of the good guys, using his powers to avenge his mother's death in a Nazi death camp. Michael Fassbender is a revelation as Magneto, with him giving the character a cool, Sean Connery-circa FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE vibe, that meshes beautifully with the swinging sixties setting that Vaughn adopts (although it's distinctly more MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E than MAD MEN in tone). Watching him here, it's clear that Fassbender's going to be A-list before long, and this is a star-making role if ever there was one. There's a scene early on, where he hunts down two Nazis in Argentina, that's one of the most memorable action scenes I've ever seen in a superhero flick. Fassbender brings an palpable edge to the role and, like Ian McKellen, keeps Magneto right in the gray zone between good and evil, where I've always felt he belongs.

While the first half is more of a spy yarn, once Xavier and Erik come together, and start collecting mutants, FIRST CLASS settles into more of a traditional, superhero caper. While it could have been stale, Vaughn's direction, coupled with a creative storyline that folds the Cuban Missile Crisis into the plot, keeps it energetic, and fresh.

One thing's for sure, Vaughn really goes the extra mile to fold this into the franchise, with a couple of cool nods to other films in the series. The cast is pitch-perfect, with Jennifer Lawrence coming off especially well as the young Mystique (and looking mighty fine in a pair of cool sixties thigh-high leather boots). I also really enjoyed Nicholas Hoult (from ABOUT A BOY) as Hank McCoy, whose transformation into Beast is one of the film's central character arcs, and makes an intriguing character.

As for the villains, we get an appropriately frosty January Jones, who mostly parades around in lingerie (no complaints here), and Kevin Bacon. Bacon's performance already seems to be dividing critics a bit, with some other reviewers saying he hams it up a little too much. I don't really agree, as it suits the sixties Bond-vibe they're going for, with the Hellfire Club being like a S.P.E.C.T.R.E for mutants, and Bacon being the Blofeld like head. He does indeed ham it up a bit, but he's essentially playing a sixties Bond villain, so it works.

If the film has any shortcomings, it's that Rose Byrne seems to disappear from the film after the first thirty minutes, with some scenes suggesting that a longer, romantic subplot between her and Xavier might have been trimmed from the film. That said, the film already runs an epic 135 minutes, so I guess something had to give (although if there is extra footage, I'd love to see it reinstated on Blu-ray).

Overall, I can't recommend X-MEN: FIRST CLASS highly enough if you're a fan of the series. It's an amazing way to rejuvenate the franchise, and I have my fingers crossed that Fox will take the same, ambitious approach (hopefully with Singer's input, as nobody knows how to film the X-MEN like he does) to the next WOLVERINE, and possibly, an X4 somewhere down the line. One can only hope, but this is a great start.

Extra Tidbit: The only thing I liked about X3: Kelsey Grammar as Beast. Apparently, that was the only aspect of Vaughn's X3 that made it to the screen. I wonder what the film would have been like if Vaughn had been able to continue?

Whodathink that Fox managed not to fuck this one up? May I humbly suggest that Vaughn get to direct Wolverine 2???

So glad this turned out well. Vaughn's an underrated director who makes nothing but highly entertaining flicks. Can't wait to settle down in that theater seat and see the X-Men return to form!!

...he's directed 3 movies. It's a little premature to cast a view on him as a director, especially calling him underrated or overrated

I stick to my opinion. I loved Layer Cake and Kick-Ass, really liked Stardust, and this sounds like it may be the best of the bunch from the review. Vaughn is underrated, as far as I'm concerned.

WP-DFA - This is Matthew Vaughn's 4th movie (lets not forget about Layer Cake)and he was Guy Ritchie's producer helping him bring his best movies to the screen (Lock Stock, and Snatch). I think, at this point, it is OK to call him underrated by mainstream audiences.

Color me shocked, this is some fantastic news as both an X-Men fan and a fan of summer blockbusters. I was worried about this movie from the jump because of it's short production schedule that seemed rushed and reminded me of the dreaded X3. One thing this site has taught me is to trust Chris Bumbray's opinion and based on his recommendation I am now super psyched to see this movie.

Happy to be proven wrong!

I am man enough to admit I was wrong. I was one of the doubters about this flick after seeing the trailers but, it was as far from my opinionated "meh" as you can get. A really skillfully done job by Matthew Vaughn and his cast to revive this series with this vastly entertaining and smartly written prequel. I am sorry I doubted them and happy they proved me wrong. One of the best movies so far this Summer.

Saw this yesterday, best of the year so far. It's funny that you call Fassbender a revelation, as he's been doing solid work for a few years now and I've been waiting for him to finally hit A-list. The dude's awesome and is only 34, I say give him Bond after Craig's done with the role.

Extra tidbit: Yeah, Kelsey Gramer's Beast was top-notch, especially when he tried to quote Winston Churchill during the climatic battle in the finale.

Good to hear, apparently (unless I hear otherwise) removing Rothman from any involvement in the franchise helped revive the franchise. Fox needs to fire him completely if this film is a hit (it should be, It's X-men, it always sells even when it's crap)

Here's an argentinian fan of Joblo! The only problem with the Argentina part, is that VILLA GESELL is a city in the coast with a beach, and what they show in the movie is BARILOCHE, a city where some nazis came and hide in the end of WW2. Anyway I love X movies and can`t wait to see it next friday.

X-Men First Class can easily rival X2. Really wiped bad memory of X3 and Origins: Wolverine. The entire cast is awesome. The movie is like 1960s spy thriller set in X-Men universe. Definitely best movie of the year so far. Who says comic book movies have to be action/cheesy all the time? X-Men First Class comes very highly recommended.

Fassbender was excellent, McAvoy was great, everyone else was good (January Jones being an obvious weak spot)... The story rocked, loved the dynamic between Erik and Charles and would have liked more of that... here's hoping it kicks box office ass and Vaughn starts working on the sequels.

BY FAR the best in the series. X-Men First Class did for the franchise what Casino Royale did for Bond. Note for the next one: Don't change a DAMN thing! (Michael Fassenbender is EXACTLY what I pictured Magneto to be)

9/10... I find this hard to believe. But if it's actually good, great.
I just hope it's not being overly praised and therefore a letdown.
Trailers didn't do much for me, perhpas thats a good thing.
Expectations are a bitch.

Just returned from my own screening of the film. Chris sums up the positives very sharply and Vaughns film deserves all the praise it gets, however it does fall slightly short of greatness. Some uneasy dialogue, awkward sentimental moments, a selection of poorly chosen mutants (angel should be called Fairy) and good/bad character changes without any real motivation are the culprits. Nevertheless, it is the film to beat this summer and contains without doubt the greatest cameo since Zombieland

Hmmm...

I'm still on the fence. While I love the director and most of the casting, I don't know if I can get past the story inaccuracies. I'm too much of a fanboy, but I stand by the idea that if a story is good enough to adapt, then it's good enough to leave relatively identical to the source material. I'll still see it and reserve judgement until after the credits.

This coming from a guy with a completely different take on the Joker as his avatar?
It's OK to be a fanboy and allow a margin of change when discussing an adaptation.

A movie is a series of compromises and this one just seems to be going with a different cast of characters for it's go around. Think of it as the prequel to the inevitable prequel that may have the original class. Until then, loosen up a bit and enjoy things for what they are.

@jsin.atomic, the only thing different about Nolan's Joker is that he didn't have bleached skin. Other than that, the original character was totally there, so I don't quite get your comparison. And what the fuck do compromises have to do with the fact that FOX should have used this opportunity to completely reboot their X-men series as opposed to tacking it on the already ruined one they already started that also butchered continuity right out of the gate. And what the fuck do compromises have to do with the fact that FOX should have used this opportunity to completely reboot their X-men series as opposed to tacking it on the already ruined one they already started that also butchered continuity right out of the gate. I'll admit, sometimes I'm able to turn a blind eye to huge departures from the source material, but X-men has been given so many chances and they still haven't gotten it right, so why should I expect now to be any different?

@Smiert, The point that I was making is the Joker is different in almost every iteration he has appeared in. Romero's joker is different than Mark Hamill's. Nicholson's Joker is different than The original Bob Kane. Hell Alan Moore even had his Joker share a laugh with Batman, which never would have happened in Nolan's universe.

What I'm saying is that there is no definitive original source material when it comes to comics. Everything has been changed, ret-conned, and twisted to suit the

So you are telling me that all the shit that has been flung about every superhero property entering a fast turnaround stage for reboots, and one decides to cling, even if it is ever so softly, to the original series the missed an opportunity? How is this series ruined? Why is it beyond saving? We aren't taking bat-nipple levels of fanboy transgression here, we are simply talking about the mishandling of key characters and two very anti-climactic films. They must have realized that the fucked up when they weren't able to keep Vaughn and brought him back to, according to almost every movie critic, mainstream and geek, revitalize the franchise.

Hell hath no fury like a fanboy scorned, I accept that but if you are such a source material purist, is there a yarn in the entire back catalog of the XMen that you would like to see page for page, panel for panel translated to the screen?

Dude, get off your fucking high horse. Yes, numerous comics have had different interpretations and retcons etc, but you know what has NEVER been changed? The fact that the original X-men were Scott, Jean, Hank, Bobby, and Warren. In the 50+ years that the X-men have existed, this has never changed. No, there is not a specific issue or run of X-men books that I'd like to see adapted, but I would like it to, in the very least, follow the simplest aspects of the original story. Is that really too

No, this franchise certainly isn't past saving and I have no doubts that this film will be better than Wolverine and X3, but the bottom line is, Singer is continuing to just do his own thing with no real reverence for the actual comics, simply picking and choosing the parts he likes it and shouldn't work that way, imo.

I promise that wasn't my high horse. And it wasn't even close to my fucking high horse (you should see the cock on that beaut)... If you can't discuss this properly than I respectfully bow out. Sorry to have offended your sensibilities and fuck fox, Singer, Vaughn and anyone else that may try to rationalize the exclusion of some characters in a movie. It's all blasphemy

Though if you opened with a horsecock joke in the very beginning, we probably could've been friends.

Question Jsin, how many X-men comics have you read? Just so you know, having your favorite mutants from across the whole time line crammed into one movie is blasphemy. A little respect for 50+ years of rich comic book story telling is due. And Singer is just ego driven, with the exception of X1, this whole series has been an atrocity. And yes, I have been reading X-Men for 29 years, and only in recent times has the company been 'mixing' it up to boost sales. The story has been was constant from

The story has been was constant from 1963-1991, when the prolific Claremont left the series. Sure there can be departures from the story, but making a Frankenstein's monster of a movie is just obscene.

On the fence...

It's good that this is getting good ink, but I still find myself tepid on First Class. I didn't think any of the first 3 X films were be all, end all - especially the second. Decent, but not great. Killing off Cyclops? X3 was putrid. To me another movie with Prof. X and Magneto seems tired, even if they are working together. Sentinels? Sinister? Apocalypse? Brood? Mojo? Give me someone else because it feels like the Superman movies with Lex Luthor. Mystique again? Pass. They could

Again, I hope it does well...

The extra tidbit is incorrect. Vaughn also cast Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut.

Just a few things I've been saying before...
First, don't forget to FORGET XM3 and Wolverine, to avoid any continuity nightmares. Basically, any X-Men movie Singer wasn't involved in never existed in the world of XMFC... And I'm quite happy with that actually !
And don't expect to much for a comics continuity or chronology (Angel Salvador, Darwin, HAVOC for f**k sake...).
With those things in mind, you'll have one hell of a good time!

X-Factor :First Class

That's what the movie should be called. I'm glad it got a good review, and some parts of the movies I'm glad to see, like the friendship between Charles & Erik. Other parts of the movie not so much. So why would he throw these mustants together and try to pass them off as the original Xmen?

This is a potential prequel trilogy to Singers films, so it follows in that continuity and we'll probably see Cyclops, Jean and Storm join the team at some point in the sequels. Right now their focusing on the emergence of mutants, and the friend/enemy relationship of Charles and Eric which was a big part of the backstory from the other films that deserves to be explored.

This just proves...

the lack of intelligence of the general movie going public. Do make a stand for great source material. Candy coated poison is still going to kill you. Hey Bumbray, Marvel write a better script, yes keep the director but get rid of Singer he has systematically destroyed every superhero title that he has touched.

I just read the script for the next one. It's set in the 70s and every critic will mention Saturday Night Fever like they do James Bond w/ this new one. Mr.Sinister is the villain but they're changing him to a her. Mrs.Sinister. Xavier must gather a new team to rescue the original team from Sinister's lair on the island of Genosha. The new team is Thunderbird, Jubilee (w/ pet dragon, Lockheed), Binary, Riptide, Shatterstar and Warlock. Everyone will be dying w/ anticipation for opening

I was thinking that he might have done this as a joke, but that's also pathetic because it wasn't funny and it was a waste of time. If it was a joke he probably thought it was funny and he's proud of himself.

To whoever, no I don't think my post was all that funny. Just took 2 seconds to come up w/ a scenario as radically different as in the new film. Sad not funny. And that'll be the day when I give a rat's ass that someone calls me a douche just because I'm voicing my opinion and not jumping in line w/ the salivating fan-children flock of JoBlo for a friggin' movie.

Singer

X2 was not that great and Singer sucks. Just watch any scene with storm using her powers as if it was some awesome action scene. I bet the movie would have been even better if Singer wasn't involved.

I didn't blow me away, either. It's easily the best of the trilogy, but the trilogy - it's not that great. They are all pretty warmed over and toothless, compared to the comics.
