Rex becomes a bath toy raver in new Toy Story short Partysaurus Rex

It looks like Rex, the lovable T-Rex from the TOY STORY series is about to cut loose and let his inner animal unleash in the short, entitled PARTYSAURUS REX, which is set to debut in front of FINDING NEMO 3D.

“He’s sick of being the angel of goodness and sensibleness and caution and fear,” says voice actor Wallace Shawn, who has played the character since 1995. “He wants to stand on the side of pleasure and happiness and joy. … I live this drama every day of my life!”

“What I was going for was, you move to a new town and make new friends, and suddenly you think you have this chance where you can reinvent yourself,” says director Mark Walsh. “I love that Rex, in his sweetness, thinks he can reinvent who he is in the image of a party animal.”

Rex finds the opportunity to “start over” while hanging in the bathtub with his new owner, Bonnie, from TOY STORY 3.  Using his uniquely small limbs, Rex is able to turn on the water and start a bubble-filled rave, complete with glow in the dark toys and underwater disco lights.

“If you’re a bath toy you get really intense playtime. It’s like a party,” says director Mark Walsh, who previously worked as an animator on FINDING NEMO, THE INCREDIBLES, and RATATOUILLE. “Then when the water goes down you can’t move. You’re helpless. And that’s pathetic, these guys in bottom of the tub all the time.”

Who doesn’t love Rex, am I right?  His “nervous nellie” dinosaur is part of what makes the series so great and I think it’s about time he got his time in the spotlight.

PARTYSAURUS REX premieres in front of FINDING NEMO 3D on September 14, 2012.
