Rhys Ifans is the unnamed villain in the Spider-Man reboot

Oct. 11, 2010by:

Breaking, breaking, Spidey has a villain. It's going to be British actor Rhys Ifans, according to a press release sent out by Sony moments ago. What villain will he be playing?

Well, that's what's not exactly clear as of yet, as the studio is keeping that info close to the vest, though I'm not sure what they have to gain by doing that. What, are they going to change what villain he plays before shooting starts? I would think if they've cast it, it's already kind of set in stone. Guess we'll have to wait until the teaser trailer shows us some green scales?

The Lizard has been the popular speculative choice for a while now, though I suppose they could be going a far different direction to catch us off guard. Feel free to do what you do best and speculate. This quote from director Marc Webb might help:

“What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys' incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character."

The SPIDER-MAN reboot so far has been just full of surprises, casting relative unknown Andrew Garfield in the lead, then with Emma Stone playing not the red-headed Mary Jane, but Gwen Stacy. Ifans seems pulled out of nowhere, but here's what the studio has to say on why they picked him:

“We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans. After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, we’re in awe of his talent and think he’s the perfect choice to take on this role.”

From Shakespeare to Spider-Man, a natural transition.

Extra Tidbit: No Morbius please. I'm tired of vampires, and don't want them in my superhero movies.

OMG...

I can't believe it didn't occur to me before. In that photo above, doesn't Ifans sorta bear a striking resemblance to one Roderick Kingsley? I'm calling it for the Hobgoblin now. Too bad we likely won't find out til sometime next year.

UNF URGGG.

I really want to hate everything about Sony, and a reboot 3 or 4 years after a franchise tanks. I really do!

But between Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and now Rhys Ifans!? I'm torn, man, I'm really torn.

The new Curt Conners?

I think most wanted to see the Lizard in Spidey 4, so I'm really pulling for that one. OR we get get Micky Rourke to play Kraven and then he would have an excuse for having little animal friends...

Never thought of it before but Mickey Rourke would be pretty badass as Kraven. Just give him more screen time and depth than Whiplash got and hed be great.

Wow...

...the whole idea of a new Spidey franchise just hits me with an overwhelming feeling of-- MEH. I dont know-- maybe I'll be excited when I "see" something to be excited about, but the whole thing is just not something that Im just chomping on the bit for-- yet. Is it too soon to re-boot this thing? Maybe I just dont have faith that they will really pull off something fresh and cool with it-- the only casting news that made any impact with me was with Emma Stone's casting--and even that seemed

I'll keep my fingers crossed that this new take will surprise me and it will be as cool as I would want it to be. For now, though... I just cant bring myself to CARE about this project or get excited about it-- which is weird cause Im a big fan of the character. So... until I see a trailer or hear something that really gives me a reason to be excited... I guess Im just a big bag of neutral for now. :I

BTW, if you don't know why they withhold info on the character, it's to give Internet speculators like you and me to fret over it for a few months, thus building publicity and anticipation. Remember they did this exactly same thing when they cast Thomas Haden Church.

Cool casting choice! Now who's he gonna be?

He does not look like a Vulture, or a Jackal. I could totally see him as Carnage, although I doubt that's who he'll play. He might be a good Electro, or maybe Lizard. But I'm going with Mysterio.

I said Electro earlier because he's definitely a villain that could present Spider-Man with a physical challenge, but it would be nice to have a villain that's also a mental villain for both Parker and Spidey.

He's a character that's never really had one definite look (apart from the costume) and he could definitely be a rage filled character.

I barely remember this guy from Little Nicky. As far as who he'll play it might be Mysterio or it might be the lizard or it might even be vulture even though the vultures the reason sam raimi left in the first place. It probably wont be green goblin although it would be cool to see the ultimate version on the big screen with no costume and fireballs.

Jackal?

I agree that Lizard or Goblin might be the villain. But, I agree also with Schwarzgeraet. Ifans might be the Jackal. Jackal is lanky, is older than the two lead characters (& actors), mixes a warmth for Gwen Stacy and a psychotic rage, and is a central character in Peter's schooling and the Gwen Stacy storyline. Also, the Jackal storyline would present contemporary subject matter: the creepy, predatory older teacher and the younger student (although that creepy situation has been around

When Mike Fleming broke the news that Emma Stone was auditioning for a role, he also wrote that he'd heard they were thinking of Philip Seymour Hoffman for Venom. I doubt they'd re-introduce Venom in the first installment of their "reboot", but I'd like to see the character done right. Rhys Ifans is a decent actor, but his casting doesn't exactly excite me in any way.

Ifans is about the best possible choice for a lanky super-villain! He's a hoot. I would love to see him as the Goblin in a real bug-eyed and green non-metallic suite, or as a lizard too of course.

The best casting for a villian since Peter Saarsgard for The Green Lantern. Ifans is a great actor and has been great in everything from The Replacements to Little Nicky to Pirate Radio. This is great inspired casting and I am very excited to see what villian he is going to be. My best bet is on The Lizard or Green Goblin. I didn't have much faith in this "reboot", but with the credit behind this movie, it has me pretty excited.

Not to be a dick, but...

...just to correct the end of your article, you wrote

"And see, that's villainS, plural. So Rhys is only one piece of the puzzle. What baddie combo are we going to see for this new film?"

Read it again. The plural use of "villains" is referring to the actors they've used for the entire series thus far, i.e. the original trilogy. Nowhere is it implied that there will be more than one villain in this specific film.

Anyway, he's a good actor. Should make for an interesting villain. I get

Anyway, he's a good actor. Should make for an interesting villain. I get the feeling that this reboot is going to be less hammy and more serious/darker than the Raimi trilogy. (I liked Raimi's first two films in the series so I'm not saying it was a bad thing, but his style was definitely more over-the-top than a lot of the recent comic book films that have been successful. Should be interesting to see where this film goes.)
