Richard Kelly heads to Texas to direct the contemporary thriller Corpus Christi

02.17.2011

After rebounding somewhat from the truly disastrous SOUTHLAND TALES with 2009's THE BOX, filmmaker Richard Kelly returns once again with a new contemporary thriller he'll both write and direct called CORPUS CHRISTI.

The Texas-set story, according to Variety, "concerns a mentally unstable Iraq war veteran, who forges a strange friendship with his boss, a wealthy and politically ambitious owner of a supermarket chain." Kelly through his Darko Entertainment banner will produce the more traditionally narrative film along with former Basterd and fellow filmmaker Eli Roth, who's known Kelly since the CABIN FEVER days.

Casting is reportedly under way right now, with announcements expected before the end of March. Production is expected to begin on location sometime in July.
Extra Tidbit: Richard Kelly wrote 2005's DOMINO, a film I totally dig no matter how many people call me "stupid" for doing so!

Domino is an awesome movie even if it did get silly towards the end.

I loved Donnie Darko, but not so much with his other 2 movies. I'll give this new one a shot, but I swear if I see a vortex anywhere in this movie I'm done.

The dude has a lot of potential so I'm definitely interested.

As for the Extra Tidbit: You're not stupid for liking Domino, but I hate that movie ONLY because of Tony Scott's direction. Everything about the look and editing of the movie pisses me off, which is a shame because everything else was good.

I like the fact that he actually tries to be creative unlike some filmmakers today. I'll give this a chance.

2 for 3, i'll give his next few films a chance just because he seems like a filmaker with a few original ideas.

...

Richard Kelly is like M. Night Shyamalan, he made one really good movie and failed to live up to the expectations ever since.
