Negan has managed to stick around for quite some time in Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead comic-series, but the television series will be bringing Rick Grimes' (Andrew Lincoln) conflict with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) to a close by the end of the upcoming eighth season. Now that all out war has finally broken out on the series, the question has become, "how long will the war last?" Entertainment Weekly posed that very question to Walking Dead show-runner Scott Gimple recently, who said:
The war will absolutely be resolved by the end of season 8. Absolutely.
Refreshing news for a series which seems to relish in drawing out events as long as possible, but, with sixteen-episodes still ahead of us, perhaps they'll still get their chance to milk the war for all its worth.
As for whether we might see the Whisperers, the next group of adversaries Rick Grimes and company face in the comics, at some point during season 8, Scott Gimple merely said, "I'm going to give you a full no-comment on that." Led by the remorseless and savage Alpha, the Whisperers are a mysterious group of survivors who disguise themselves with the skin of walkers in order to blend in with them and slip through herds unnoticed.
The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 22, 2017.
