Ricky Gervais asked to host next year's Golden Globes?!
While most viewers were pleased with the job Ricky Gervais did hosting this year's Golden Globes (75% of JoBlo.com readers polled felt he was "hilarious"), the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was most definitely not. After the awards, HFPA President Philip Berk said, "He definitely crossed the line," while one anonymous HFPA member added, "Ricky will not be invited back to host the show next year, for sure." Turns out that's not entirely true.
Yesterday Gervais posted an update to his blog that was a simple scan of a running diary he kept during Golden Globes week for a UK mag Heat World. At the end of his diary, Gervais said about the Globes, "The ratings went up again and the organizers asked me to consider a third year." So all that indignation was just a front? And once the ratings came in, the HFPA suddenly changed its tune? Keep in mind though, this is just Gervais speaking here at the HFPA hasn't commented on the matter.
UPDATE - When contacted to comment on the news, Berk says, "There is no truth to this rumor. We have not asked him to come back." So who do you believe?
As for whether Gervais actually will return, he's not leaving that up to speculation. "I don't think I should," he says. "I don't know what I could do better." With Gervais not returning it'll surely be a hard act to follow for whoever hosts the 2012 ceremony. Who do you think could handle the spotlight?
