Ridley is Forever

10.13.2008

A lot of people have been hating on Ridley Scott these days. Reviews for BODY OF LIES have been lukewarm, calling the legendary director such bad names as "over indulgent" and "over weight". And let's be honest, the guy hasn't had a bonafied hit since GLADIATOR which was released like 50 years ago or something.

That's why he and all his fans should rejoice today, as it has been announced that Ridley is going back to doing what Ridley does best. That's right. Ridley is doing Sci-fi. After giving us two tomes in the modern sci-fi cannon with BLADE RUNNER and ALIEN, Ridley Scott planned on directing THE FOREVER WAR, Joe Haldeman's 1974 novel about a soldier who battles an enemy in deep space for only a few months, only to return home to a planet he doesn’t recognize some 20 years later. The project was lost in development hell and thus never made. Thank god development hell is not real hell in that it doesn't last forever. Ridley is set to direct the film after NOTTINGHAM which is a good thing because it sounds awesome.
Extra Tidbit: Sci-Fi guru Robert Edlund wanted to direct this sucker many moons ago.

Awesome but...

"battles an enemy in deep space for only a few months, only to return home to a planet he doesn’t recognize some 20 years later."

Er, "20 years" is a long way from "forever." In the novel, he battled the enemy on planet after planet, traveling between engagements with his team at sub-light speeds that allowed decades to roll by in Earth-time. By the time the whole conflict was shown to be a misunderstanding, nearly 1,000 years had gone by, leaving Earth civilization totally

20 years...geez. Even Ripley floated through the core systems for 57 years. Hell, I've been out of high school for 20 years. Damn, now I'm depressed...

Scott rules!

Kingdom of Heaven should be added to the list of his recent movies that were good. I didn't want to watch it but after being talked into, it's pretty damn good. The directors is even better. Liam Neeson, Orlando Bloom, Brendan Gleeson, Jeremy Irons and Ed Norton. If you haven't seen it check it out, then watch the Directors cut.

The way I see it, Scott is a good director who has fallen prey to some shit screenplays. He's missed on his last three films, and Nottingham looks like crap (in my humble opinion). That said, he's also directed some of my favorite films ever (Black Hawk Down, Matchstick Men, etc.) and will be able to do that again if he gets a good screenplay out of someone. Fingers crossed that this is a good script.

P.S. A Good Year was one of the worst films i've seen in ages. I mean, seriously, didn't

Re: Dan Barna

How ignorant can you possibly be??? American Gangster was a critical and a commercial hit. Same as Black Hawk Down. If you're going to slander someone, at least back it up with solid evidence.

Hasn't had a hit since GLADIATOR? I guess you forgot about AMERICAN GANGSTER, which was a kick ass film.

You kidding me...

This is a good news. I am a huge Ridly Scott fan. I am happy. He has done an awesome job in all his movies.

He makes them perfect with no flaws. Black Hawk Down to Kingdom of heaven and most recently BODY OF LIES.

Body Of Lies is a perfect film. Well directed, Quality story, action, plot, acting, well scripted. Detailed carefully. What else we wanna see... seriously do you want to see some naked chicks showing boobs on the big screen while riding a guy with 4 inch tool.

Give me a

Give me a break. Ridley is awesome.

I recommend BODY OF LIES. Watch it. Learn the truth.

Ridley's had more recent hits

Sounds interesting, but Ridley's had more recent hits than GLADIATOR (though that is his biggest). What about BLACK HAWK DOWN (109M) and AMERICAN GANGSTER (130M)?

Holy Crap!

This is awesome news. As someone who has read the novel, I'm giddy. Finally Ridley is coming back to sci-fi! Damnit, if Ridley actually makes this, then it could be another masterpiece alongside "Blade Runner" and "Alien". This is fantastic news!

No flipping way. This is exactly what I thought when I saw the title of the article, but I was sure I was going to be wrong. This is awesome, awesome news. Although it makes me wonder what's going to happen to Brave New World. Maybe they'll give it back to Andrew Nicholl (Gattaca) he wrote the script and I thought he was an awesome choice to direct to begin with.

Man, we have a ton of great sci-fi adaptations on the way. Scott's doing this, Proyas is doing that Heinlein book, Berg's re-making Dune, del Toro's doing Frankenstein, AND Slaughterhouse Five, Neuromancer's on the way, Kimberly Pierce is making Childhood's End, those producers from New Line are trying to get Foundation made. Holy heck, we've got like almost every major author of classical sci-fi covered. Okay not quite, but we're getting there.

Now if only we could finally get Ender's Game, then I'd be happy...
