Ridley Scott finally breaks the silence surrounding Prometheus

Feb. 27, 2012by: Alejandro Stepenberg

Two sidebars before we dive in: 1) It's always possible that there was something amiss with the translation from Hungarian to English of what Ridley Scott said to the Hungarian movie news outlet that broke this, and so information may have been left out or written down incorrectly.  2) There are are some spoilers ahead, so if you're the kind of person who enjoyed knowing nothing at all about PROMETHEUS I would suggest that you go elsewhere.

Guy Pearce in a snazzy suitThis is currently unconfirmed insofar as official channels go, so do with that fact as you will.  If this really is true I don't know why Scott wouldn't release a statement in English too, but...

"When the first Alien movie and Blade Runner were made, I thought that in the near future the world will be owned by large companies. This is why we have the Tyrell Corporation in Blade Runner, and Weyland-Yutani in Alien. They sent the Nostromo spaceship.  The Prometheus is owned by an entrepreneur called Peter Weyland, and is played by Guy Pearce. That’s the connection between the two films, and nothing more. Prometheus is a new film, a new world, and is full of new ideas. And of course new monsters as well."

Bearing in mind that Pearce told MTV News this past January that he is in PROMETHEUS "only for a minute," this could both work and not work with the new information revealed above.  Though I feel like the owner of PROMETHEUS' ill fated ship would have a larger role than Pearce describes (perhaps in a sequel?), so we'll see.  That's all anyone can say really.  We'll see.  And soon too, as you can catch PROMETHEUS and have everyone hear you scream this coming July 8th.

Extra Tidbit: If true, is this the sort of "connective tissue" you were hoping for between ALIEN and PROMETHEUS?

yep

I speak Hungarian and can confirm it was translated correctly but IMO Riddely Scott is probably only saying it's a new world to hide the fact that its a prequel. All the similarities can't be just for the sake of referencing one of his old movies.

My take on Prometheus

Here is my take on prometheus. I believe that the "Space Jockey" from Alien is in fact a creation from the huge Blue guy in the Prometheus trailer. I believe they were engineered to lay eggs similar to the queen Alien's eggs which have a face hugger like organism in them but different. I think they were engineered this way and that their only purpose was to sit and lay eggs. And in fact the chair that the Space Jockey is sitting in is not a huge gun but a device to help in laying it's eggs

I believe they were engineered to lay eggs similar to the queen Alien's eggs which have a face hugger like organism in them but different. I think they were engineered this way and that their only purpose was to sit and lay eggs. And in fact the chair that the Space Jockey is sitting in is not a huge gun but a device to help in laying it's eggs in the stone like columns from the trailer.

However something goes wrong somewhere and the organism inside the egg gets to the space jockey sitting on the chair and lays its embryo inside the space jockey itself. Ultimately the space jockey then is the host for something totally different than what the huge blue guys were expecting. The different outcome is actually the alien Queen. This is where the Alien Queen came from. Because all the other human hosts give birth to the same looking xenomorph and never a queen exempt for the horrible Alien 3 but besides that.

And that is how it is linked to the Alien world because it will reveal to us how exactly the Xenomorph to be more specific the Alien Queen came to be through a mistake from the big blue guys and through the Space Jockey host. Which leads to an Alien Queen being left at LV-426 to lead us to Alien and into Aliens.

What's up with Guy Pearce only showing up for like a minute in movies nowadays... The Road anyone? I hope his part is more substantial than that in this film.

Not entirely true...

This statement is not entirely true seeing that it cannot be on an entirely new world because obviously from the trailers this is in fact the same crashed ship in the first Alien movie as well as Aliens.

did you think about the possibility it's a different fuckin' planet altogether? not everything has to be happening in the same setting. The "new world" is set in the "universe" that shares Alien films. New world is another way of saying it's not happening on the same planet, but it shares a familiar territory. Not so hard when you use the grey matter..

There are a couple of different possibilities as to what will happen in the film, but based on the trailer the most logical inference would be that the derelict ship from alien is present in this movie. That would lead one to conclude that this movie could have something to do with LV-426, since we see the ship crashing and we know its ultimate resting place. It's an easy conclusion to reach and i can see how dtrues878 came to it even though the film might end up going in a different direction

the right way

In my opinion, this is perfect. I prefer subtlety. When you have a connection like this, it links the two movies but also makes the universe huge!! This is the complete opposite of what George Lucas did by having Darth Vader create C3PO, having R2 (an unknown droid to them) saving the ship, and all of that other crap he did...he took his vast universe and made it tiny!

You hit the nail on the head with the Lucas problem.

This isn't exactly what I'd call breaking the silence for Ridley since the only new piece of info given in the interview is the reveal of Pierce's role in the film. Everything else he said has pretty much been concluded already by the fan base and he's still being as cryptic as ever with the rest of the film.

Be interesting to see if the title is anything more than the name of the ship, relating the significance of the name. It could suggest that, as in previous films, the humans' mission seeks to gain an advantage from alien contact - a metaphorical 'stealing of fire from the gods'. Seems plausible.
