Ridley Scott reveals details for Alien Prequel

04.23.2010by:

It's been a bit since we've gotten anymore news on the ALIEN prequel.

With a new PREDATORS film coming out this Summer, it seems like the heat has been turned back on to get a prequel for ALIENS made.

Director Ridley Scott gave some great details on what the prequel will entail, "It's set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver's character Ellen Ripley]. It's fundamentally about going out to find out 'Who the hell was that Space Jockey?' The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer's chair. Remember that?" Who doesn't remember that? That's been one of the biggest mysteries gone unanswered.

He continues by talking about the human expansion into the galaxy, "[The film] is about the discussion of terraforming -- taking planets and planetoids and balls of earth and trying to terraform, seed them with the possibilities of future life. The director says that the initiative will be led by Weyland Corporation, an early iteration of Weyland-Yutani Corp., the group that causes many problems throughout the series, "Weyland hasn't joined Yutani yet, so they go and see Weyland."

For anyone who watches the prequel, no prior knowledge of the series will be needed. There will be nods to some of the elements in the original series, as well as a tough female lead, "Well, the main character [in the prequel] will be a woman, yeah. We're thinking it could go down that route, yeah. When I started the original 'Alien,' Ripley wasn't a woman, it was a guy. During casting, we thought, 'Why don't we make it a woman?'"

As far as the look of the aliens, Scott feels like the old designs from H.R. Giger are "worn out". He's though about contacting the artist to create something new, "Yeah, he's still around. Once I get more serious and get going, and the big wheels start turning, we'll certainly talk. And maybe we'll come up with something completely different."

Extra Tidbit: How are you guys feeling about the prequel in 3D?

Yeah, cuz, you know....30 years ago humans didn't look like humans...

...so that would help us all understand why Aliens won't look like Aliens, 30 years prior to the first movie setting.

Sigh.

This is really what makes directors like Ridley Scott stand apart. Lesser directors would feel compelled to play it safe by keeping the original designs and sticking to the Aliens "formula". Scott says screw that, I'm going to take another road. Now I'm excited.

this is cool! I always wondered who the big guy in the chair was, but why does he want to completely change the way the Aliens look? It's not Aliens if he completely changes them!

I agree wit Mut, it's better left as a mystery, all the stuff going on in the Alien universe.

Ridley Scott is amazing. Blade Runner is still one of my favorite Sci-Fi movies. I trust him, but don't think 3-D would be a good choice.

I'd prefer a graphic novel based on Scott's idea instead of another movie.

Only if they don't go Clash of the Titans way, you know, post-prod. 3D conversion, and then that crappy version is pretty much only version playing everywhere (in my city here in Finland, 2D version was in theaters for about a week! I didn't have time to see it then and now.... damn!)

But new Alien, directed by Ridley Scott? Oh yeah!

As long as the "tough female lead" isn't Michelle Rodriguez, I'll be happy.

Also, don't care about the 3D, being that I only have one working eye.

I Wish........

I never clicked this link. I never knew what Ridley Scott looked like until now. I liked him better when I didn't have a face to put to the name. I always envisioned him as some old crowly genius....oh wait......

Cannot. Wait.

Hell, I cannot wait for this. Aliens is my all time favorite flick. The concept sounds interesting and refreshing. Since Ridley Scott is on this I feel really good. Damn, I just want to see a bad-ass Alien flick already!! Its long overdue!

How can you change the aliens look for a prequel? That won't make any sence at all. It'll be some weird, CGI alien that transforms back into what we see in the first one?

The aliens shape and size changes depending on the host it is born from. That is why the alien looked different in Alien 3.

Am I the only one who thinks it's a bad idea to reveal the space jockey's origins? I mean, that was one of the great things about the original film: the mystery. Take that away, start explaining who the jockey was, where the aliens came from, and so on and so forth, it'll just make things that much less effective.

The only reason im hugly excited for this and Predators is because they are not stupid Remakes why cant all movies go down this route like Escape from NY. Get Scott someone who directed the orginal and knows the series well back and boom this movie is hyped up and everyone excited. Like honestly if this was news about a full remake of the orginal who would been excited. Even how horrible Aliens vs Predator and Alien 4 was a prequel is still getting people excited than a Remake. So please even

Alien 4 wasn't a prequel.
Also, the problem with Escape from LA is that Buena Vista Special Effects, was doing the SFX for the movie, and closing at the same time, so they did not put much energy in those SFX...

Not really interested in 3D but I still can't wait for this. I wonder what they'll call it. Any ideas Schmoes? I'd go for Alien: Genesis which I mentioned before and as usual got negative marks but face it, you know it makes sense. :)

At first I wasn't too sure about this prequel, but I'm starting to warm up to it.Being filmed in 3D would be ok with me if we're on a different planet or something, but if the film is mostly in a spaceship than it probably wouldn't be necessary.

Remember, guys...

The aliens look different because of their hosts. That's why the alien in Alien 3 was different, and why the Predalien is also different. My guess is that the alien's hosts in this movie might be some other species we don't know about.

I believe in America. I believe in Ridley Scott. NO MORE BEATING A DEAD HORSE. Let's finally get something fresh and inventive! I will be following news of this prequel with intense interest, as I've been hoping for it for years.

Yes, I know, but I was torn between getting that quote from The Godfather right and confusing Scott's heritage. I made my choice and I'm happy with it.

Why change the design of the aliens?

If this prequel is set just 30-years prior to Ripley and her team discovering the abandon ship, why would the aliens look different?

I'm actually looking forward to this. I think Scott coming back is a great decision for the series... although a little odd.

If there was a 3D option I'll stick to the 2D.

Thumbs up for explaining the space jockey (finally) and going back to Giger.

I don't think this should be in 3D however Aliens (the second one) in 3D would have giving me some awesome PTSD

Why would you change the design of the Alien???

Extra Tidbit: I'm fine with it as long as it's filmed in 3D and not up-converted.
