RIP Sidney Lumet

Apr. 11, 2011by: Paul Tassi

We would be remiss if we started the week without recognizing the passing of the great director Sidney Lumet. The man lived a full life and this weekend succumbed to lymphoma at the age of 86. He was still directing as recently as 2007, with the rather excellent BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOUR DEAD.

But it's his earlier work that we will remember him for the most. He was the mastermind behind such classics as 12 ANGRY MEN, SERPICO, DOG DAY AFTERNOON and NETWORK.

He earned five Oscar nominations, and was awarded an honorary statue in 2005 for his long and storied career. He grew up in NYC, and as a result, a great number of his films were shot there.

He was a fantastic director to be admired and emulated, and he will be missed. Check out one of his best scenes from 12 ANGRY MEN below

Extra Tidbit: His book, Making Movies, is a fascinating read.

R.I.P.

"12 Angry Men" is one of the best examples of how great JUST characters and dialogue can be.

He put character and story first

R.I.P. Sidney Lumet

I love the fact that he was "unshowy", he'd never distract the viewer from the story

Lumet

Sidney Lumet literally changed my opinion of movies the first time I saw Dog Day Afternoon. He will be fondly remembered.

I was drunk when I learnt the news on Saturday. I almost cried (no kidding).
Lumet is one of the most underrrated american film director.
His style was seamless, which is probably why he wasnt as known as Scorsese or Coppola in the seventies. But he knew how to make a movie. He made great classics. Network is not only his finest film, but easily one of the finest film in the history of cinema. Im glad he at least left us with a high note. His last film, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, was

a truly talented and gifted filmmaker. 'dog day afternoon' and 'network' are some of the movies that made me fall in love with film. a devastating loss to cinema, but one that will be remembered for all that he had to offer. RIP

and yes, his book is amazing. a must read for anyone remotely interested in the filmmaking process.

A legend

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead was one of the vry best films to come out of 2007, and easily ranks among his finest work. "Network" is one of my favorite movies of all time and I somehow always forget he directed it (maybe because it's missing Al Pacino or Sean Connery). "The Pawnbroker" is an underrated classic that contains Rod Steiger's best performance (no small feat, either). The man gave my favorite acceptance speech for a Lifetime Achievement award. I've still only seen half of the

I've still only seen half of the classics he's made ("12 Angry Men" always seems to be checked out on Netflix, and I've yet to hit up "Serpico," "Murder on the Orient Express," or "The Hill"). And yet, as big a fan as I am of his, I feel somehow very ignorant about his clebrated book "Making Movies," that I never even knew it existed until now. Another relatively underrated movie of his is "Prince of the City." Few directors could draw a performance out of their actors the way he did consistently.

My respects

To one of the greatest auteurs of Hollywood, who could gracefully tread the line between commercial and arthouse cinema.

P.S: Fav movies are Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico and Find Me Guilty (underrated)

One of the greats, RIP

It's sad that we lose one of cinemas greatest directors but at least Sidney Lumet lived a full life and gave us some of the most incredible movies. Serpico, Network, Dog Day Afternoon and one of my favourites, the brilliant 12 Angry Men. Thanks for posting that clip, Paul; it made me appreciate that movie all over again.

A great loss

This past year I read his book making movies, and realized how much he strived for perfection and how much he also strived to teach future filmakers and enthusiasts. A great man and a director, defiently will miss him.

Sidney deserves better than this.

One youtube video is all you really have to say about this guy?

Really, we should be making people aware of some of the underrated films that he brought to the table.

Anyone who is the slighest bit of a movie fan already knows about 12 Angry Men, Dog Day, network and The Verdict.

But what about Running on Empty, Prince of the City, Q & A, Before the Devil Knows Your Dead, Find Me Guilty and The Pawnbroker?

people should be made aware of these films.
