RIP: Star Trek, Fright Night, and Green Room actor Anton Yelchin has died

06.19.2016

Russian-born actor Anton Yelchin has died at the age of 27 in a freak car accident at his home early Sunday morning. The actor was on his was to a rehearsal with friends when his car rolled back and pinned him against a wall. LAPD spokeswoman Jenny Houser had this to say about the incident:

"A fatal traffic collision occurred. It was the result of the victim's own car rolling backward down his steep driveway, pinning him against a brick mailbox pillar and security fence."

Yelchin is best known for his roles in the newly rebooted STAR TREK franchise, as well as films like TERMINATOR: SALVATION, HEARTS IN ATLANTIS, ALPHA DOG, LIKE CRAZY, GREEN ROOM and the FRIGHT NIGHT remake. He had just wrapped production on the thriller THOROUBRED, as well as the romantic film PORTO. He was next set to appear alongside Brendan Gleeson in a TV series adaptation of Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes and will feature once again as Chekov in next month's STAR TREK BEYOND.

A sad and tragic loss to a talent that had so much more ahead of him. He will be sadly missed.

Anton Yelchin (1989 - 2016)

That sucks; haven't seen Green Room yet but will be going out of my way to do so. He had the potential to be a top star.

Horrible... He was a great actor.

This is just a sad realization of how fragile we are and how easily and unexpected it can all end. Cherish those moments you have because shit like this happens all the time. It only gets widely spread when it happens to someone famous.

Just a kid...

... and a talented one at that. For someone to die at his age is tragic enough but to do so in such a freak accident is unthinkable.

If there's a takeaway from this, I think it would be to show love to those around you. Life may be shorter than you'll ever know and the world is capable of throwing you the strangest curveball when you least expect it.

Sad news indeed. I don't know what else to say except, rest in peace.

Seriously? What is going on with the last two years? It seems there have been soooo many more celebrity deaths then in previous years! I pray for his family and friends!

It's not something strange. Each year, the world population grows. Each year, it becomes easier to become a celebrity, even if it's not deserved (I'm not talking about Anton). Therefore, each year, the number of celebrities deaths increases.

Odd Thomas is such an underrated film, and it's my favorite movie of his. This is a sad day. Great actor. And so young. He will be missed.

A sad start to my day. He's gone way too soon. He had great potential to be an even greater actor that he already was. May you rest in peace, Mr. Yelchin. This news also reminds us to be very very careful about automobiles. Anything can happen.

Man, it's always sad when a talented artist passes away, but as others have said, this particular case really does feel doubly tragic because of Yelchin's age. I remember seeing him in Alpha Dog several years back and being like "Who is this guy? He's so freaking good, how do I not know him?!" It is a low down shame when someone like Phillip Seymour Hoffman or James Gandolfini pass away, but I suppose at least they were able to build a legacy and carve out their own little niche in film

Granted, popularity and media attention are not everything, far from it. But it's jut absolutely tragic that Yelchin, who showed so much promise, died not only so young, but before he was able to receive the degree of recognition he might have achieved if only he had been granted another decade.

This is depressing. Anton Yelchin was one of, if not my favorite actor of his generation, who gave so many memorable performances, and embodied, I thought, what a young actor ought to be like. I think accidents are harder, because unlike drug abusers and old people, no one can say they saw this coming.

In some ways this almost hurts more than the old guys who have been around forever. They've had years and decades to do this. This guy had a great career ahead of him and it's almost worse not getting to see the things he would go on to do. For what it's worth I really liked him in the stuff I've seen him in (Green Room remains one of my most anticipated of the year). Plus that's no way for anyone to go.

When I first saw him cast as Chekov I struggled to buy into the idea but by the end of actually watching the first film I had warmed and really enjoyed his performance so this comes as very sad and tragic news. Condolences to his family and friends.

This has been really hard on me not just because I thought he was becoming a great actor that I would grow with (were the same age) but I heard about his death when I checked my computer while I was listening to an audio commentary of Terminator 2. James Cameron was talking about life and death and next thing I know I see this, of course Yelchin went on to play Kyle Reese in Terminator 4. No fate but what we make huh, seems hard to believe that now.

What awful tragic news. Bizarrely affected me today. Probably just because it was so unexpected compared to someone like say Leonard Nimoy where it was expected. Rest in peace man, rest in peace.

Very bummed

I am a fan of this man's movies, whenever I watched him in a movie I knew I was going to feel some kind of emotion and he always entertained. His best movies were Rudderless, Odd Thomas, and Fright Night. This is very sad news.

He seemed like a genuinely good guy.. same age as me and I can't even imagine. Always liked hiso roles.. Thought he was great in the Fright Night remake despite its bad box office.

C'mon, dude. If you have a problem with the site, send the editor an e-mail. No need to tarnish an article about such a genuinely terrible loss with complaints about ads.

I don't get any adverts. Besides, why so offensive about Chris Bumbray? Do you have any arguments to back your statement up? If you have any difference of opinion, that is not enough, and secondly, if you want to complain, maybe an article about the death of a known actor (independently of how popular he was) may not be the best place to do it.

Maybe if you go somewhere else as you threaten, then it's a win win situation, for you and the site.

Thank you Paul.

Kid was easily my favorite part of the Star Trek reboot, and Charlie Bartlett was just hands down a cool ass movie. I don't think anyone else could have given us that performance. To his family and friends, thank you for sharing him with us.
