RIP: Two Soul Men

08.11.2008

This weekend we lost two multi-talented men from the world of entertainment. Actor/Comedian Bernie Mac died on Saturday while Oscar-winner Isaac Hayes died on Sunday. Coincidentally the two were co-stars in the upcoming drama SOUL MEN (Samuel L. Jackson co-stars). Mac, star of the OCEAN'S film series and Peabody Award Winner for his Fox sitcom "The Bernie Mac Show," died at the age of 50 of sarcoidosis, a rare autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in tissue. Besides SOUL MEN, Mac has a number of films on the way including a voice in MADAGASCAR 2 and the comedy OLD DOGS with Robin Williams and John Travolta.

Hayes, who won an Oscar for his theme from SHAFT, was found Sunday morning in his home beside a still-running treadmill. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead an hour later. Hayes, an accomplished musician who wrote "Soul Man" among other classic R&B songs, may be perhaps best remembered for some of his more recent works like voicing Chef on "South Park" or appearances in movies like HUSTLE AND FLOW and REINDEER GAMES.

There's obviously much to say about both men that can't fit into this small space but I urge you to read more detailed obituaries on Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes to learn more about their inspiring lives. No word yet on whether November's planned release of SOUL MEN will be pushed back.

RIP

A sad weekend indeed for fans of comedy and music. Mac's death just came out of nowhere, a total shock for me. Best wishes to their families.

To fat-womanizer: you should be one of those people protesting tropic thunder.

I, for one, am pretty fucking gutted to be honest. Nothing else to say on the matter really

Rest in peace Bernie and Isaac, I obviously never knew the guys but they made me smile and my thoughts are with their families

P.s - Fat-womanizer, can you actually read? Twat

I was pretty shocked when I herd about both stories. Yes, Bernie Mac was a hilarious actor but he was a stand-up comedian first. He was someone that not only was loved by his fans, but someone well-respected by other comedians in the business and that's something that doesn't come easy.

The Extra Tidbit

He only said that because they were the two co-stars of Jackson's upcoming movie, Soul Men. Do you people not read the whole article?

I hated to hear that Bernie Mac had died; that shocked me. I've really liked him since I first saw him. And, coincidentally, we just watched "Ocean's Eleven" and "...Thirteen" again last week, and I noticed then how much he really stands out, to me anyway. He had several moments of brilliantly subtle facial expressions and gestures that were absolutely hilarious, as well as showing what a good actor he had to be to pull them off.

And this is the first I'm hearing about Isaac Hayes' death;

And this is the first I'm hearing about Isaac Hayes' death; another terrible loss. However, I'm far more interested in his work in music than in his work on "South Park". And to tell the truth -- and maybe I'm the only one thinking this -- I am really pretty annoyed at the suggestion that he "may be perhaps best remembered for some of his more recent works like voicing Chef on 'South Park'." "South Park"? For me that means very little compared to his musical achievements. But I AM probably in the minority on this one.

Either way, it was a bad weekend, losing two talents like these.

too honest?

Its hard to feel sorry for these guys who reach the pinnacle of their craft, acquire fortune and fame and die after living what is the equivalent of twenty lives. They've had sex with tons of women, had millions of dollars, tv shows, movies awards, been around the world, etc...

this goes for ledger and every other sad death we've had in hollywood.

I'm more sad for me... who won't be entertained by them anymore.

Their short lives are still better than 99% of long lives.

Bernie Mac came out of the blue for me. While a fan of his, I never really watched that many of his movies or comic sketches, and caught his show only on occasion (but it was damn funny).

While Hayes is the kind of guy who has left such a mark in his life it almost makes sense to refer to him in the past tense, but when I heard his death announced on the radio this morning I uttered one involuntary "No!"

I guess the only reason to even concern myself with Jackson's health is that while

I guess the only reason to even concern myself with Jackson's health is that while Mac was 50 and Hayes was 65, this year Jackson turns 60. For what it's worth. And for the record, I'm not worried.

The loss of bernie mac is sad. After all who else is gonna be in black comedies to play as a comedic family member. As for hayes, Im surprised the scientologists have not made a mess of themselves already by claiming it was the theaten that killed him. I guess any money he has made will probably goto bankrolling a vacation for another scientologist exec.

R.I.P. Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes. You will both be missed. This has been a horrible year for celebrities being taken before their time.

A CORRECTION

They are both tragic losses,

however Bernie Mac wasn't in Madagascar, and isn't in Madagascar 2.
You are confusing him with his original kings of comedy co-star Cedric the entertainer
