Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ Rupert Wyatt to direct Star Trek 3? Plus news on who is writing the script

Rupert Wyatt Star Trek

Good news everyone! Looks like those rumors yesterday about Jon M. Chu directing STAR TREK 3 are not true. A representative for Chu talked to the Huffington Post and told them that the director has not been contacted by the studio for the project.

The list of other possible directors from yesterday didn't have one filmmaker that (according to Cinematallic) is now a "lock" to helm the new STAR TREK film: RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES director Rupert Wyatt. While he's definitely a better pick than Jon M. Chu, Wyatt isn't a slam-dunk in my opinion; the word "serviceable" comes to mind. That's not a knock on Wyatt, but he just hasn't done much (although he's only directed two films) that sets him apart from other directors. Of course this could also turn out to be false by this time tomorrow, so we are going to have to wait and see what happens with Rupert Wyatt.

Two filmmakers from the previous movies will be back for STAR TREK 3 though: THR has learned that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are in negotiations to write STAR TREK 3. Kurtzman and Orci (besides scripting the first film) wrote the script for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS with Damon Lindelof but THR says Lindelof will not be returning for the third movie, which I'm sure is great news for many of you Schmoes who dislike the writer. It was rumored at one point that other writers were being looked at (including Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz who wrote THOR and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS), but apparently Paramount has decided to stick with Kurtzman and Orci.

Paramount still doesn't have a title or release date for the next STAR TREK film, but many believe we will see a third film by 2016.
