Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Rupert Wyatt to direct Star Trek 3? Plus news on who is writing the script

Aug. 6, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

Rupert Wyatt Star Trek

Good news everyone! Looks like those rumors yesterday about Jon M. Chu directing STAR TREK 3 are not true. A representative for Chu talked to the Huffington Post and told them that the director has not been contacted by the studio for the project.

The list of other possible directors from yesterday didn't have one filmmaker that (according to Cinematallic) is now a "lock" to helm the new STAR TREK film: RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES director Rupert Wyatt. While he's definitely a better pick than Jon M. Chu, Wyatt isn't a slam-dunk in my opinion; the word "serviceable" comes to mind. That's not a knock on Wyatt, but he just hasn't done much (although he's only directed two films) that sets him apart from other directors. Of course this could also turn out to be false by this time tomorrow, so we are going to have to wait and see what happens with Rupert Wyatt.

Two filmmakers from the previous movies will be back for STAR TREK 3 though: THR has learned that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are in negotiations to write STAR TREK 3. Kurtzman and Orci (besides scripting the first film) wrote the script for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS with Damon Lindelof but THR says Lindelof will not be returning for the third movie, which I'm sure is great news for many of you Schmoes who dislike the writer. It was rumored at one point that other writers were being looked at (including Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz who wrote THOR and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS), but apparently Paramount has decided to stick with Kurtzman and Orci.

Paramount still doesn't have a title or release date for the next STAR TREK film, but many believe we will see a third film by 2016.

Extra Tidbit: Which is the better news: Jon M. Chu isn't directing or Damon Lindelof won't be back?

So glad it's not Chu

But having Orci and Kurtzman isn't much better, those guys are so overrated...

I have a feeling this is going to end up like X-Men 3. They should wait for JJ like others have said, anyone else will probably just try to copy the look and style of the first 2, while messing up the story and characters in the process.

This movie absolutely deserves a man called Rupert at the helm.

"Serviceable"? What the fuck is that shit? I'm betting you haven't seen his debut film; The Escapist. A mini, modern-day masterpiece. And what he did with ROTPOTA was sheer skill.

Lindelof not coming back is great news. That guy is terrible.

I liked RPA

i can't cite the guy too much seeing has he hasn't done anything else i've seen (not much in general in fact) but i did like Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Like you said in the article, he's serviceable, Time will tell if he's the next Abrams or Cameron, or if he's just another hired hand. But so far he's doing alright, and as long as Kurtzman and Orci are back (and hopefully step it up a notch), it should be a pretty enjoyable movie

They're unfortunately rushing this film way too fast and will most likely end up sucking after two great predecessor films.

I'd be surprised if they give the reins to a director with so few films to his credit.

I'm still confused why they just won't wait for JJ to become available. He's stated numerous times he'd like to direct part 3. Is Paramount punishing him for taking the Star Wars gig? Wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I'd prefer Matt Reeves

Or Duncan Jones, or anyone else with talent in this genre. But what really frustrates me is when directors (Bryan Singer) admit to being fans but refuse to work within the universe because they don't wanna have an influence.

While Wyatt is probably a safe choice, this franchise, in my opinion, deserves one hell of a send off with a director with more of a sci-fi flair. Not sure why Duncan Jones hasn't been approached yet to direct or co-write a script.
