Road to Damascus

The man behind THE DARK KNIGHT, producer Charles Roven and his frequent collaborator Richard Suckle are developing DAMASCUS GATE, a political thriller involving a journalist and a group of extremists in modern-day Jerusalem for Columbia Pictures. THE INTERNATIONAL scribe Eric Singer will pen the script.

Based on Robert Stone's 1998 novel, which Sony has acquired the rights to, the film is set in a world in which the Israel Palestine conflict is on the brink of being solved, when a washed up journalist comes upon an extremist plot to sabotage the effort. The title is a reference to a landmark gate in Jerusalem's Old City (which I've been to, ha!) The producers insist that although this has the makings of a classic political thriller, it will obviously be a heavy character study as well, which is never really a bad thing. This is my early vote for Robert Downey Jr. as the journalist.

I can't picture Downey in that part, not one bit. But that Ethan Hawke thing might be good.

Personally I'd rather see Aaron Eckhart on Nic Cage. Nothing screams "washed up" like Nic Cage.

Yeah, I'd go with Hawke. RDJ is usually good, but he already played a similar type character in ZODIAC. Haven't read the book, though. Maybe they need to go more with someone like Nick Nolte.

RDJ would be good

Count me in as well for RDJ being the journalist. However, I need to read the book first. If the character is a younger journalist(50. Plus, I'd like to see Harrison in more dramas.

"Washed up journalist" is a pretty vague description to cast somebody on, but I'm going to go with Ethan Hawke, because that guy really hasn't gotten a break in a long time and deserves more leading roles in big movies. Unless, by "washed up" they mean old, in which case I'd say Harrison Ford because he just seems like the journalistic type and because this premise sounds way better then his next movie he has lined up where he plays a news anchor. Actually maybe that's where I got the

Reading the headline, for a second, I had hopes HBO's canceled "Carnivale" was getting made into a movie and we would finally be getting a conclusion to the cliffhanger. Drats.
