Road to Perdition sequel might be on its way to Purgatory?

Aug. 5, 2010by:

With Sam Mendes and Tom Hanks, it’s kind of a surprise that ROAD TO PERDITION slipped under the radar as much as it did when it was released. I mean, it was pretty good, but something about it didn’t quite stick.

Well now Max Allan Collins, the man who wrote the original comic the movie was based on has two more, Road to Purgatory and Road to Paradise. And he’s already thinking about the inevitable movie adaptations Talking to MovieWeb:

"Well, I can only tease, I’m afraid. We seem to be right on the brink, or maybe it’s the precipice, I don’t know (Laughs), of a deal being signed. Things have gotten very, very serious and I have, for years, held onto it as a project I would direct, because I have directed five independent films. It does look like, now, that I won’t be directing, but it is my script. That’s the most important thing to me, that the material be faithfully rendered. That isn’t to say that you have to do it absolutely faithfully. There certainly are differences between my graphic novel and Road to Perdition, but the spirit of the story is there. Mendes really got it and understood it and, I think that, in some ways, enhanced it."

“I don’t know. We’ve been approached and the offer seems to be very, very serious. We have signed a round of paper but it is not nailed down yet and it looks to be pretty interesting. I will tell you that this will happen about 10 years after Perdition ends. Michael is 10 years older in Road to Purgatory.”

The books follow the son of Tom Hanks’ character from the film who returns home from World War II to (spoilers) avenge his father’s death, and he gets mixed up with Al Capone in the process. Do you care about a ROAD TO PERDITION sequel?

Extra Tidbit: Mmm could be interesting, but without Mendes or Hanks, I don't know if the franchise has legs to stand on its own.

Paul Newman was fantastic as was Hanks. Not sure if a sequel can pack as much power, not to mention the amazing cinematography. i would rather it be a standalone gem doesn't get a ton of notice but I was lucky enough to have seen it.

It's not needed. I understand the writer of the first wrote two more, but to me, he ruined the first book/film by making the next one a revenge story with Michael Jr.

The whole point of the first one was to show that JUST because Mike Sullivan Sr. was a gangster didn't mean his son needed to be one also. He was trying to protect him from that life and at the end that's why HE shot Maguire and didn't let his son do it.

Now you're saying the second one pretty much RUINS that and says that

Now you're saying the second one pretty much RUINS that and says that Mike Jr., after ALL his Father taught him about morals and what NOT to do is STILL gonna become that way and get revenge?

Revenge for what? His Dad deserved to die. He was a murderer, a gangster, a BAD person. Even Jr. sums this up with "...I tell them, 'he was my father'.

Also, for whoever said that "the writer of the novels wrote the screenplay so that means it'll be faithful". Yeah, faithful, but any good? Probably not. Screenwriting is different from novel writing. Besides, the second and third book don't sound NEARLY as good and well written as RtP was...

Count me OUT.

sorry but thats not the way things are in reality. and that kid was and obviously always would be stubborn. I can totally see a revenge story working.

also, you can bet your fucking ass that if mendes came on bored, the script would be good and he would make any changes if necessary.

ROAD TO PERDITION was a fantastic movie. Mendes did a great job on it. I know the comic is a 3 part series but after PERDITION was made into a movie, the way it ended just makes me feel like it doesn't make sense for another one.

But, if they do go through with it and can get the same kid and Mendes the director, then i'm on bored.

PulpFictionFan1, I agree with you. It's not like a studio is trying to milk the cow to death: IT WAS A TRILOGY FROM THE BEGINNING, so let's adapt the other 2 parts of this (one big) story. And, with scripts from the author of the graphic novels, it will be respectful of the material at least.
So yes, I hope it will be made

Awesome..lets get this goin!

Tom Hanks character died so people can get over that. The main thing is that this is originally a series of graphhic novels "Road to Perdition" being the first one. so why wouldnt the other 2 get adapted? This would be a great trilogy!

In my opinion the thing that made 'Road to Perdition' was the cinematography of Conrad Hall who, sadly, died soon after it was finished.

Are people just glossing over the article and not even reading it. This isnt some throwaway studio project trying to bank on the title, it is a 3-part book series.

That'd ruin the original's morals.

A sequel like that destroys the reasons for why Tom Hanks did what he did in Road to Perdition.

People don't call Road to Perdition a revenge movie at first, even though it is, because it has such strong integrity and moral values behind it. It's not senseless revenge just... because he's mad. This Purgatory already sounds like it's making that mistake.

Of all the films in need of a sequel, Hollywood said, lets do a sequel to ROAD TO PERDITION?

I guess that means its tie for a Godfather reboot/re-imagining.

Try reading the article. The movie was based on a 3-part book series, Perdition being the first book. The idea isn't even close to being on par with a Godfather reboot

If it's done with the same style and tone as perdition? hell yes. This can easily go south though.

Why do we even need a sequel? The original was so incredible on its own. Ugh.

Wouldn't be the same without bringing back the entire team from Perdition, wouldn't be the same without Conrad Hall ASC (R.I.P) behind the lens.

You could go a whole new direction with it I guess but arn't there enough awesome comics out there to be made into movies?

I'll wait to see some more details before passing judgment, however, if Mendes was onboard and the original actors came back, then I think I'd be interested.

it's not like they're trying to do a sequel just because the first one made money!! it's a continuing story. i say make it!! loved the first, BTW.

Not Needed!

This isn't a bad idea per-say, but it's not necessary. The first movie was great, leave it at that. There is no real need for this to happen. Just leave it alone, and let me remember it as a wonderful film about a father and his son.

How do you figure its not a franchise? The original author wrote 3 books as a series.

Do people not read?

It's 10-years after the events of the first movie. Michael could have gone through a lot, and like most young men during the time, their only option was war. I'd love to see a sequel if Mendes came back.

Wait a fuckin' minute....

Michael returns home from WW2?? At the end of the movie, Michael says he never held a gun again, so wtf is he doing at war? And how exactly are you gonna get revenge on a top gangster w/o one?

This just screams of a money grab to me and I'd much prefer if this stayed in development Hell. Perdition is a fantastic, self-contained story and I would be really upset if its greatness was reduced significantly by a shitty sequel...

My favorite Tom Hanks performance was in Road To Perdition. I'd be perfectly fine if Pergatory or Paradise never gets made. Just leave Michael's character on the beach contemplating the few weeks he spent with his father.
