Rob Zombie to write and direct a movie about the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team

Rob Zombie is known for his gory genre films HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES and THE DEVIL'S REJECTS but has often spoken about wanting to venture outside of horror. It looks like BROAD STREET BULLIES will be that project.

Zombie is preparing to follow up the recently completed LORDS OF SALEM with a drama about the 1970s era Philadelpha Flyers hockey team. The group was dubbed the Broad Street Bullies for their rough style of play.

According to Deadline, the physical play of the Flyers was legendary, to the point that when they played the Soviet Union’s supposedly invincible and tough Red Army team, the Flyers roughed them up so badly that the Russian team left the ice in the first period, and only returned when told they would not get paid if they didn’t. The Flyers won the game 4-1, with head coach Fred Shero proclaiming, “Yes we are world champions. If they had won, they would have been world champions. We beat the hell out of a machine.” Despite being known as Freddy’s Philistines because of the work of enforcers like Dave Schultz, the Flyers had skilled players like Bobby Clarke and won back to back Stanley Cup championships in two-fisted fashion.

Zombie himself called the project "ROCKY meets BOOGIE NIGHTS." Sounds like a winner to me.

The Flyers hockey dynasty was recently the subject of an HBO documentary of the same name. Check out the trailer.

Bob Clarke, former player and current Flyers executive, said “The great Rob Zombie making a drama feature film about the Broad Street Bullies is exciting and thrilling for all of us! I look forward to seeing it.”

What do you think of Rob Zombie's first foray outside of horror?

Count me in.

Truth be told, I actually think Zombie has good talent for writing dialog and characters. He can handle humor and gets good performances out of his actors.

So I'm actually interested in seeing him step away from Gore Porn for a change. Not that those '70s Flyers teams were a pacifist bunch...

Though I gotta say, it really sucks that hockey continues to not be taken seriously as a sport by Hollywood. 'Miracle' aside, every hockey movie is about fights and violence and slapstick

I find this really interesting, but I'm having a very hard time seeing this in Zombie's hands. I'm so used to his horror and grindhouse style with everything, both music and film, that this is something I'd have to see some footage for to make a judgement call.

if you knew the true story it was based on, that wouldn't be too farfetched =p

It'll be interesting to see him branch out, but unfortunately I don't think I'll ever be able to watch this. I hate the Flyers too much.

This vaults to the top of my most anticipated. I LOVE the idea!!!!! That's when hockey was hockey not this mockery masquerading as pro hockey today. Honestly the NHL (No Hitting League) should stop handing out the Stanley Cup. It's a disgrace to the names and TRUE hockey players already with their name on the Cup.
