Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer star in the first trailer for Luc Besson's The Family

Jun. 4, 2013by:

Robert De Niro in another movie where he plays a member of the Mob? Yep, I'll take it. Directed by Luc Besson? You got me.

De Niro and his wife played by Michelle Pfeiffer are relocated several different times after ratting out fellow mob members. In an effort to get them as far from danger as possible, Witness Protection puts them in France. However, it's a little hard for them to suppress their impulses and as you can probably tell, it winds up drawing some attention.

It's Besson so I want to see it, but then it felt a little hokey. Okay, I like it. Maybe you'll like it. Check it out below.

Synopsis: The Manzoni family, a notorious mafia clan, is relocated to Normandy, France under the witness protection program, where fitting in soon becomes challenging as their old habits die hard.

Damn.

The opening of the trailer got my hopes up so much -- De Niro looking like a boss again for the first time in years (literally and figuratively), Scorsese's name popping up...but as soon as the guns turn on him and it suddenly turns into a comedy, my hopes spiraled down the drain. Don't get me wrong, it might be OK, but a lot of what I'm seeing here is kinda been there, done that jokes (not the first comedy about a mafioso being relocated either, there are a few of 'em and this seems to even

Also, minor nitpick, but De Niro and Pfeiffer (who actually looked better before she apparently got plastic surgery before filming this) are way too old to be playing the parents of those kids. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it sorta beggars belief a bit.

Could it be the return of DeNiro we have all been waiting for? Silver Linings Playbook was a great film, but this looks like the DeNiro most fans want to see! I am now very much looking forward to this!

Looking good!

I'm just glad Besson is directing again. He has always been one of my favorite filmmakers.

As long as he didn't wrote it, it might be watchable...

Simply because most us viewers know him through Taken, not Leon or Nikita...

Luc Besson? Cool! It could be a chance for de Niro to play in a movie again that doesn't suck.

I didn't realize that Martin Scorsese was executive producing this. It of course looks nothing like his movies save for De Niro, but that's icing on the cake of what looks like a great fish-out-of-water movie. And Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones can make pretty much anything better.

Looks a lot better than the stuff Robert De Niro has been doing of late. It looks entertaining, funny and that is a cool cast they've gotten together. I thought I recognised the actress playing the daughter; she's Dianna Agron!

Wait... WHAT?!?

"MALAVITA" is one of my favorite novels of all time (and Tonino Benacquista, one of my favorite living novelists). Why is this the first time I heard of the movie?!? The cast is perfect for those characters and I will say something I don't say often about Besson flicks : I'm really REALLY looking foward to this one.

I'm sure its going to be a very entertaining film but I'm thrown by the comedic tone. Upon hearing that Besson was directing and reading the synopsis, I assumed he was going for a more La Femme Nikita/Leon tone. Oh well.

At least he's being true to the book, since the book is more or less a dark comedy.

At first it felt like a Goodfellas knockoff, but once the trailer got going I couldn't help but admit this might be a pretty fun time at the movies.
