Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone in talks to star in boxing film Grudge Match

05.31.2012

You would think that a clash of fists between Rocky Balboa and Jake LaMotta would yield some potentially great sports drama, right? Yeah, well, instead we're gonna be getting a boxing comedy from the director of ANGER MANAGEMENT. Because that's exactly what people would want to see from these two.

The film is called GRUDGE MATCH from director Peter Segal and TheWrap is reporting that Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone are in negotiations to join the comedic sports project. The film is about "two retired boxers who return to the ring for a final grudge match." While it has yet to be officially greenlit, the movie is a "go" project at Warner Bros. and is expected to begin filmming early next year. The latest draft comes from "Entourage" creator Doug Ellin. DAREDEVIL director Mark Steven Johnson is producing. So many great creative names!

Before Sly and Bobby D can throw barbs and jabs at one another, they first gotta get through a good number of other projects. Stallone of course has THE EXPENDABLES 2 as well as BULLET TO THE HEAD and THE TOMB opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger. De Niro, meanwhile, has the David O. Russel flick SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK and the Sean Penn-directed drama THE COMEDIAN to name but a couple.
Extra Tidbit: Stallone and De Niro starred opposite each other in James Mangold's COPLAND.

What's with all things "comedy" all of a sudden?

Just now I read that Pacino & Walken are going to be in a crime con movie, which looks great but then I read its an action comedy and not crime thriller like it should be with Pacino & Walken as criminals....Now a boxing movie with Rocky & LaMotta, and instead of a pure suspenseful balls to the wall "WARRIOR with elder dudes" drama, its also going to be a "comedy"?! Not to mention there's another De Niro project with Luc Besson where he will be a reformed gangster turned familyman which SHOULD

I read it here so anyone can check it....But what the hell? Do everyone lost their faith on De Niro & Pacino in their dramatic/violent roles?? Sorry for the crankiness, just a bit frustrated thats all.

You know that saying, 'Hope for the best and expect the worst' - it kinda fits this too well.

Query

What actually happens when a film is 'greenlit'? Does an judge/exec push a secret button under the table like 'Got to Dance' and BOING! a big green star lights up. Then the exec shouts "YOU ARE 'GO'!"

Well I guess I'm the only one who thinks this sounds like a potentially Razzie sweeping movie, and a great way to destroy what few great memories I have left of Stallone and De Niro by basically parodying their greatest characters for the director of Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. Yay

Phew! So glad to read it's a comedy. Somehow premise sounds fantastic as a comedy but lame as a drama to me. With the proper writing & direction of course . . .

Stallone and DeNiro in a boxing comedy? That's gold Jerry.. Gold!!

But seriously, this could be fun (if done in the right way).

BTW, although crazy silly, OSCAR is one of my favorite comedies, Sly was slick, you paluka!

Sounds interesting but you cant have Stallone in a movie about boxing and not help but see Rocky up there. It would be like Harrison Ford starring in a movie about treasure hunting but not being Indiana Jones. And you can't exactly dress Sly up to make him look like a different character because all he will be wearing is boxing trunks.

I gotta admit...

I'd love to see a ROCKY/RAGING BULL crossover, but a comedy? These guys [Stallone and De Niro] aren't really that suited for laughs (much less as a duo), I have to say...and I don't have much faith in the creator of ENTOURAGE to provide the funny. As much as I like each actor, I don't see any quality in this yet.
