Robert Downey Jr confirms Iron Man 4 is in development

10.07.2014

During a recent appearance on Ellen Degeneres' daytime talk show, Robert Downey Jr. finally laid to rest the competing rumors as to whether IRON MAN 3 would be getting a sequel. The answer is yes. While RDJ has denied the film multiple times, he recently became more open about it, stating he would do IRON MAN 4 if his friend Mel Gibson directed it. But, it seems he was much more direct Ellen.

“I know there's going to be more Marvel movies, and they have big ideas of how to do it best,” Downey hedged at first. “We're in the middle of negotiations, blah blah blah.”

When Degeneres pressed on, Downey gave a clear "yes" that the movie was coming. This should come as no surprise, but Downey's comments to Ellen seem to be similar to when he helped his AVENGERS castmates renegotiate for higher salaries with Disney and Marvel. Could all of this have been a ploy from the actor to try and get a bigger contract for future IRON MAN films?

Marvel has a lot of movies in the pipeline, many with new characters and younger talent, but nothing can replace what Robert Downey Jr brings to the mix. His portrayal of Tony Stark and Iron Man are one of the highlights of the MCU and a signature for all of the films. Do you honestly think Chris Pratt's Star-Lord would exist if it were not for Downey?

Robert Downey Jr will next be seen in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON on May 2, 2015. Who knows when IRON MAN 4 will happen.

Tbh, Marvel has no choice but to keep making Iron Mans.. too big of a cash cow, and RDJ is the face of the MCU franchise.

Ever since IM1 its been down hill from there, i couldn't blame RDJ for not wanting to do IM4 unless a new director be it Mel or anyone for that matter came on board..

Not to be the only downer thus far, but Im not that excited to be let down again

If this means we may get to finally see The Mandarain as hinted in 'All Hail The King' then I'm excited.

Honestly... I'm excited regardless.

Great news. Downey Jr is perfect as Tony Stark/Iron Man and I would have no problem with however Iron Man films he wanted to make. Glad to see one more film for the character because as much I loved Iron Man 3, I still think the character who started the whole Marvel Universe with a bang should go out with one just as big, great, and vital.

The idea of bringing in Gibson to direct would be incredible and a nice comeback story in Downey Jr helping out Gibson and vice versa. And if not

It never sat right with me that Iron Man has never gotten a worthy sequel. Hopefully they will nail this one b/c the last two have been duds.

Remember when there was that big, climactic moment in The Avengers where Tony sacrifices himself to save the world and they play it off like he might actually be dead even though Iron Man 3 had already been announced?

I miss secrecy.

The story of Iron Man is a guy who lost his way and redeemed himself, quits the bottle and becomes a hero.
Seems a perfect fit for Mel Gibson to direct. If anybody could connect with Iron Man, it is Mel Gibson.

Good news! I know IM2 and IM3 are not the most popular films in the MCU. I personally thought IM3 was a good flick, so glad to hear that RDJ is going to give Tony Stark another go-around. Personally, I say let him go as long as he wants since Iron Man is what has made the MCU what it is today. Hopefully Marvel wisens up and does their best to keep RDJ around. The new slate of heroes they plan to premiere in phase 3 don't seem to have quite the same appeal as Iron Man.

sure, why not

I say let him go as long as he wants.I had more problems with part 2 than 3. I expect Marvel to start doing more movie a year. They definitely have the cash. Maybe Iron Man 4 could be him looking for Banner. I don't know what will happen in Avengers 2 but I think the Hulk will be a pivotal point and I'm not sure he'll make it out completely intact.
