Robert Downey Jr names the best Marvel movie released to date

10 months agoby:

Many people assume that Tony Stark and Robert Downey Jr are the same person. They both have larger than life personalities, both are very rich, and both have been the center of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Iron Man serving as both the jumping off point and connective film for all of the MCU, Downey's opinion means a lot to fans. So, when he was asked which is the best film released by Marvel to date, you would expect the Stark in him to come out and name a film he starred in, right?

Entertainment Weekly is saying that in a recent interview with the Toronto Sun, Downey actually named GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY as the best film from Marvel Studios.

“[GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY] in some ways, is the best Marvel movie ever. It’s odd for someone with—on occasion—an ego the size of mine to actually say that."

Robert Downey Jr certainly knows how to play the studio game these days, especially after the career revival that Marvel has represented for him, but he is right. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY has connections to the MCU as a whole, but it is also the first movie not featuring a major superhero and also not a direct thread to one of the AVENGERS movies. CAPTAIN AMERICA and THOR were both created with direct plots to THE AVENGERS where their sequels are leading right into AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will interconnect, likely in Phase Three, but it has all of the hallmarks of what we love about Marvel movies and is an incredibly good time to boot.

With the film just crossing $500 million worldwide and close to surpassing CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER for top grossing film of 2014, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is riding high and Downey's words are the cherry on top.

It's honestly tough to disagree. But there are so many Marvel movies that cover so many different things and are different from each other, but do what they do so well, it's hard to put certain ones in front of the other. Guardians is certainly up there, in my top three easily. I still have to go with Avengers just because of the huge cast and how well it's handled and how so much more entertaining that movie is than anything else I've seen in the MCU. But the movies are all good. I even like

You know business wise and having backend deals with Marvel it makes the most sense for him to promote the newest movie.

The thing is... I agree with him, I just don't believe him.

If he were promoting the movie, wouldn't he have promoted before and at release rather than 1 month later?

No because he wasnt directly involved with it. I just think he knows not to bite the hand that feeds him.

All the movies have been enjoyable...and then there's the Winter Soldier...out in front by a considerable distance.

Yep. I agree with him. It's Guardians of the Galaxy and also Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the first Iron Man movie.

I would say it is up there with the best MCU films (Iron Man, Avengers, and Captain America: Winter Solider). with my only complaint being a weak villain. However, if we're talking all Marvel films, X2, Spider-man 2, and Spider-man are still the best for me.

Loved guardians

I think if I had to rate them I'd say,
1.Avengers
2.Guardians of the Galaxy
3. Iron Man 3
4. Iron man
5. Thor 2
6. Thor
7. Incredible Hulk
8. Cap 2
9. Cap 1
10. Iron Man 2
I know everyone loved Winter Soldier but I just thought it was decent.

Its still in his best interest to keep the MCU as popular as possible.

He may be right, but I think it's a four way tie between Iron Man 1, Avengers, Winter Soldier, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

It's pretty cool to actually hear him say this. Just goes to show how great Marvel is doing with their films and characters.

He is Correct

I said that Guardians was my favorite Marvel film since the original Iron Man, and having seen Guardians twice now, I am inclined to agree.

Agreed

I have to say Guardians gave me such a nostalgia boner. The music, the references, it just worked. The movie itself was amazing too. I never felt bored and didn't want it to end.

I would say Guardians is on top, Avengers and Captain America 2 are probably next.

1. Iron Man
2. The Avengers
3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

I hope to see Stark and the Guardians bounce off each other soon. Downey has come a long way since Weird Science. I knew I would like Guardians but I'm surprised at how much I loved it, however, the first Iron Man always comes out on top for me with Guardians in the top 3 .
