Robert Kirkman shares some details on what will happen next on The Walking Dead

12.10.2013

After watching the brutal and explosive midseason finale for THE WALKING DEAD, many fans are dying to know what Rick and his gang will be up to when the series returns next year. TV Guide talked to co-creator and showrunner Robert Kirkman, and he revealed some information on what to expect in the upcoming episodes for the series. Kirkman doesn't say anything too spoilery about the next episodes, but some of you may want to avoid the details below.

Robert Kirkman has told TV Guide that Carol (Melissa McBride) is definitely alive and will return before the end of the season. He also says the new episodes will involve the sanctuary that was mentioned in a radio message, and several characters' backgrounds will be explored (via flashback), including Danai Gurira's Michonne.

Glad to see Carol will be back, although I think must of us assumed she would return at some point. Now that the Governor and prison saga is finally over, it's going to be very interesting to see what happens next on the hit show.

The second half of the fourth season will begin airing on AMC on February 9th, 2014.

I really enjoy this show and can't wait for more episodes. Cool to hear we will be getting some flashbacks. I've been curious to see what Michonne was up to before the zombie invasion. Curious to see what this sanctuary is. My guess is it's not going to be what they hope it is. I'm glad their out of the prison. I personally enjoy it when their on the road finding new people and places. Are we gonna find out what happened to the US government? Maybe even the president? I think a celebrity cameo

This show has two things going for it that makes it the success it's supposed to be - zombies - still the only tv show where we can get our need for zombie action met. Secondly...they always manage to give us a top class episode like the last one just when it is needed. However, as great as the mid season finale was, this should have been the season 3 finale. We've wasted, what, 8 episodes of season 4...to get to a point that we really ought to have seen concluded in season 3's finale.

Season 4 episodes up until the mid season finale could have then taken us to wherever we'll end up by the season 4's finale. I'll stick with this show till the end but it definitely needs to up it's per episode quality level. At this moment in time, I think we've had two great episodes per season (overall), and then some sprinkling of great moments in an episode, here and there, and the rest, so so. I donít know, maybe Iím being overly harsh because I'm still annoyed about the anti-climax that was season 3's finale....or maybe I'm depressed coz... SPOILER ALERT...SPOILER ALERT...SPOILER ALERT...SPOILER ALERT...SPOILER ALERT...SPOILER ALERT...SPOILER ALERT... Hershel died. That all said, I canít wait for itís return Ė go figure.

I thought the first half as great. The disease in the prison went on one episode too long, but that's really my only grip with it.
**SPOILER ALERT***
The second half I see being very similar to the comics. After the prison everyone was spread out for a good chunk of the book. When they found each other again they had some pretty crazy encounters, such as cannibals. So not sure how much of everyhting they will keep in the show. The cannibals were a bit of a stretch even in the comics so

The cannibals were a bit of a stretch even in the comics so that might be axed. But here is how I see the rest of the show playing out:
- second half everyone is on their own in the groups they were in at the mid-season finale
- Abraham's group shows up trying to help other survivors and inadvertently reunites the survivors
- They learn of this sanctuary and decide to start making their way to it's location.
- Along the way they get into different circumstances and the rest of the season is more episodic vs. an over-arching story.
- End of season they arrive at the sanctuary.
- Season 5 opens with them trying to adapt to life at the Sanctuary, but after everything with the prison and Woodbury - something just doesn't seem right.
- At the mid-season finale they learn about Negan's group trying to extort the Sanctuary people.
- Second half of season 5, they go to war against Negan and hopefully this is wrapped up in less time than the Woodbury stuff and also the stuff in the comics.

While I won't say the show is garbage, it constantly veers towards garbage territory and usually manages to redeem itself by the end of season break or season finale. I'd prefer more consistency. Kirkman has too much creative control of the show. What he can get away with works great in comic form, not on TV.

It's true, some episodes are really poorly paced and then they redeem themselves.

Season 3 had EXCELLENT build up. They really made us hate the Governor but then they wasted all that energy with the ending. They didn't need to show the death of the Governor but at least make his defeat more satisfying. Maybe have Glenn or Rick beat his ass to the ground!

I hope not. Considering he's Governor 2.0, and some of the more interesting stuff happens before Negan comes barging in, I'd like to seem some of the stuff with Abraham etc... I like it when they are on the move.

Considering Rick still has his hand, there's a good chance Negan won't ever be on the show - I get the feeling Kirkman likes helping write an "alternate universe" version of the GN. As a reader, I prefer that anyway, because knowing what happens takes some of the air out of it, IMO.

From the preview after the Talking Dead and the mention of the sanctuary, and adding Abraham.. it seems like they're going to follow the graphic novel pretty closely towards the end of this season.

I think it would be kind of ironic if Carol become the next villian for the group.

But so far this season has been much better than last season.
