Robert Luketic will direct The ExpendaBelles, the all-female Expendables

Feb. 6, 2014by: Paul Shirey

If you're looking for a little more estrogen in your testosterone, then look no further than THE EXPENDABELLES!

We've heard rumblings of the all-female version of THE EXPENDABLES for a while now, but the project has taken another step forward with the hiring of Robert Luketic to helm the pic. So far, no cast is set, but there's been a handful of names tossed around since the project was first brought up, including Meryl Streep, Milla Jovovich, Cameron Diaz, and Gina Carano. The film is being written by the LEGALLY BLONDE team of Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith.

Here's the logline:

When America’s Navy SEALs are wiped out trying to penetrate the island lair of a deadly despot who has captured one of the world’s top nuclear scientists, it becomes clear that there is no such thing as the right man for the job and that this is a mission so impossible that only women can handle it. The only way in: some of the world’s deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call-girls shipped in by private plane to satisfy a dictator–and instead save the scientist and the day.

Soooo, we're killing off all Navy SEALS in this flick? Sure. I buy it. When America's elite can't pose as prostitutes they call in: THE EXPENDABELLES! In all seriousness, I could see this being a fun flick and it would likely get my $12 bucks, but I'm certainly not anticipating anything on the level of DIE HARD here. Shit, it would be hard to measure up to THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, which I still consider one of the best female-driven action flicks of all time. We'll see.

THE EXPENDABELLES is still in active development. More as it progresses. THE EXPENDABLES 3 is set to hit on August 15, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: What's your dream cast for The Expendabelles (c'mon, don't act like you don't have one!)

Holy hell this is sexist

So when it's a team of men they're tough, gruff, and mostly older... when it's a team of women, they have to be hot and posing as call girls so they can be objectified by the audience. Fuck this shit, and fuck you, Hollywood. An all-girl action team is a great idea, but it shouldn't be so objectifying.

And who better to direct than the man who brought us Legally Blonde, 21, and Paranoia? This is amateur hour in a big way.

Yeah, them going undercover as call girls is a terrible gimmick and kind of defeats the point of having an action movie headlined by women.

Milla Jovovich

Is the only one listed in the article that should be in this type of movie. Otherwise, Netforce and others nailed it below with Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hamilton, etc.

Sure, because when I think high-class call-girl, I think Meryl Streep.

Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton should be the Stallone and Schwarzenegger of this franchise (i.e. one could lead, one could be an extended cameo). The rest of the cast can be filled with the Kate Beckinsales, Michelle Rodriguezes, Gina Caranos and Milla Jovaviches of the world.

I love the idea of an action flick headlined by women, but Luketic is not a good director. And those two writers do not inspire confidence. Hope they let an experienced action flick screenwriter do a polish. 21 should've been like The Social Network and he turned it into romantic comedy fluff.

I've had a dream cast for this in mind for forever. They answer to either Judi Dench, Helen Mirren or Dianne Wiest. Stalwarts like Linda Hamilton, Sigourney Weaver (as the president!), Cynthia Rothrock

I know Expendables is supposed to be mindless fun, and I do like it for that reason, but Expendabelles SHOULD be about empowered women. This idea of dressing them up as "call girls" is pathetic. Did Sarah Connor need to dress like a call girl to lure the Terminator? Did Ripley ever come off as a slut when she was forced into battle against the Aliens? NO! They PROVED themselves powerful women without having to play the sex card.
Just because it is mindless fun, doesn't mean you can't make

Just because it is mindless fun, doesn't mean you can't make their worth more than "the elite dressed as call girls to infiltrate". Expendables hunted down their enemies to save lives. Why shouldn't these women be able to do the Seals job of infiltration?! Hell, why not just make them a female Seals team instead of an all male one that gets wiped out? This premise takes away all that empowerment. Badass is breaking into a high level security compound to save lives, not dressing like call girls so their guards are down.
Don't waste this potential on such a stupid idea. Even if it is meant to be mindless fun, they women don't have to be mindless too.

This one all depends on the names they can get. I doubt any A-listers will be on board, but even if Meryl Streep is willing, no one wants to see her in something like this. It's a cool idea though, I'd definitely see it if they get the right cast.

I think it could be fun, but hopefully there's more to the plot than just this in the end. The only thing that concerns me is, with the people involved, the cast will almost inevitably include Katherine Heigl, who I really couldn't envision or care to see in a film like this.

Way to kill the buzz, boys

I was excited for an all-female Expendables-type adventure, but that synopsis sounds like complete ass, the kind of sexist BS that hack movie producers came up with in the 80's. "Yeah, we got these tough, ass-kicking females! Let's dress them up . . . like whores!"

Hand it to Kathryn Bigelow and get the fuck out of her way.

yes the plot is kinda dumb, but having sexy women kicks ass will draw plenty of both men and women into the theater. It makes perfect financial sense when you think of it this way. It will make big big bucks.

Aw man, where to begin.

This sounds like the plot of a soft-core porno flick circa late 90s - early 2000s you'd find on late night tv!! Unless its done with the same flair as Naked Weapon, which itself visibly gave the film editors and fight choreographers pounding headaches trying to make the clearly unexperienced cast look badass, I just don't see this happening.

yeah now google most those women, then watch them walk and or run in any recent movies. Now besides osteoporosis and inflammation, how many of those very gray and very much looking old women, do you see getting in phenomenal shape and looking ripped and ready to go in this movie as their male counterparts? How many women Sly's age will look like he does, comparatively that is?

This could be fun, but that is the worst plot I've heard in years. There have been a lot of dumb movies in the last couple of years, but this plot sounds like a bad knock off some chauvinist asshole producer with a ponytail would come up with in the 80's to appeal to the dumbest of the male species. Would it really have killed them to find a way to make a kick ass, all-female action film without turning them into call girls?

If every single role were female then they could still find a role for Meryl Streep. Frankly, I don't see her agreeing to do this so the point is moot.

First of all, the "the worlds deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call-girls" plot line has to go because it is incredibly sexist. I mean, come on, if a girl wants to be tough she has to first pretend she's submissive? No. The seal team dies because the villain (who also has to be a woman) has her own team of deadly female operatives. The movie ends with Angelina Jolie beating the @#$% out of Sigorny Weaver. So now you have to cast both a team of heroes and a team of villains. The key then is to come up with a long list of female action stars and then decide which of them can carry off being villainous.

Heroes: Angelina Jolie, Maggie Q, Summer Glau, Jennifer Garner, Milla Jovovich, Cameron Diaz, Michelle Yeoh, Jessica Alba and Uma Thurman,

Villains: Sigorny Weaver, Pam Grier, Carrie-Anne Moss, Michelle Rodriguez, Kate Beckinsale, Charlize Theron, Gina Carano, Katee Sachkoff and Lucy Lawless.

They could go one better and have the movie be an all-female cast which means that the team that gets sent in and dies is also all female.

Sacrificial seal team: Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Ali Larter, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Devon Aoki, Rhona Mitra, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Grace Park.

The more I think about it, the movie only works if EVERY role is female. I think the movie should be played straight as if it were an ordinary action movie but with all the roles filled by women. There are enough female action stars to pull this off.

Luketic can eat shit for all I care.

I think there's plenty of elgible female directors who could take this on. This could have also been a perfect oppurtunity to give this to a Hollywood newbie to take on. If they are actually making this, then how is it really 'Belles' if a male is in the directors chair? I'm not saying exactly that a male should direct this, but this movie is obviously being made for the ladies. So why not give it to a female director, it could be a redeeming quality next to its all female cast.

The stick figures better sit this one out

My ideal cast would be girls that are easy on the eyes but also believable at being tough and kicking ass; Gina Carano, Kattee Sackhoff, Maggie Q, Michelle Yeoh, Michelle Rodriguez, Lena Headey and for an old school cameo Cynthia Rothrock or Lucy Lawless. Hopefully the cast doesn't fill up with a bunch of skinny broads acting hard or else count me out.

@Cop, I really want to like them. I was crazy super excited for the first one. Some of the biggest and best action stars teaming up for a new Stallone penned and directed film; not too far off his successes of "Rambo" & "Rocky Baloba", both of which are the second best (IMO) in their respective franchises. Bam! Must see. The actual product was an incoherent mess with awful editing and cinematography, terrible lighting, and I still don't get how/ why they forgave Lundgren at the end.

Sure people enjoy them more the second than the first, but I've never met anyone who praised these films!
