Robert Pattinson calls David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis script "insane and difficult", plus Sarah Gadon joins the cast

03.30.2011

After a brief period of casting uncertainties, it looks like David Cronenberg's limo movie COSMOPOLIS is all set and ready to go.

According to a press release issued by the film's Canadian distributor Entertainment One, actress Sarah Gadon has been cast as the wife of Robert Pattinson's character 'Eric Packer'. Gadon, while obviously not as big of a name as the originally cast Marion Cotillard (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES), will actually be seen briefly in Cronenberg's yet-to-be-released A DANGEROUS METHOD.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Empire, Robert Pattinson spoke a bit about COSMOPOLIS and his unlikely involvement with the project:

"I'm just astonished that I've been cast. I'd read the script before and thought, 'Wow, this is insane. But insane and difficult.' And then, out of nowhere, my agent said, 'Do you want to do it?' I'd never thought about working with Cronenberg, but I've always loved his movies. It just never came into my head that there would ever be that opportunity.

"Y'know, there are so few auteurs left. The one thing that pisses me off about working in films is when you start a project and then, suddenly, two days before you start, there's a massive rewrite to make an R-rated movie into something that's PG-13, and it's a totally different story. As soon as that line's been crossed, you know you're not making a movie anymore. You're making a...a... fridge magnet. But with people like Cronenberg you know that, no matter what, there will be a movie at the end, and it will be solid and self-contained, and it's not made for any other reason than it being a movie."

COSMOPOLIS - which also stars Paul Giamatti, Samantha Morton, Juliet Binoche, and Mathieu Almaric - is an adaptation of the book by Don DeLillo that largely takes place inside a limousine and "follows the life of newly married billionaire Eric Packer (Pattinson) as he cheats on his wife (Gadon), is pursued by a stalker (Giamatti), gets attacked by a protester and gradually loses his entire fortune over the course of a single day."

If he says he's admired Cronenberg before he was cast, I'm willing to ignore the Twilight baggage and give him a chance.

Cronenberg knows what he's doing. Pattinson is a gifted actor. With Twilight, he has to play someone on a dreamy level. Once he breaks away from the franchise, you'll see him on a whole different level. He was at a bar here in my town and I got to say, he's pretty chill and nice. Not a dick at all as some might be if they were on his level of fame.

I think what he meant was that he knows Cronenberg is very specific about who he casts. Meaning you don't go to him to get a role, he comes to you and gives you the role.

Twilight is hardly a measure of the talents of those involved in it. Hell, Anna Kendrick is in it, and she's a great actress. No one seems to bring up the fact she's in there.

extra tidbit

I feel like you were just dying to say something bad about Pattinson but had nothing significant.
If anyone in the Twilight movies are a decent actor, it's Pattinson.

I get the "fridge magnet" analogy. You don't put original works of art on your fridge, you put non-threatening pictures of family or drawings done in crayon.

I feel so blessed to have Cronenberg not only still making films but being at the top of his game right now. Can't say that for a lot of veteran directors out there . . .

The Twilight films were the best and worst things to happen to his career, in that they got him visibility, but are obviously not up to the standard of where he wants his career to go.
Every interview I see/read on him indicates that, even if he's not the best actor, he has aspiration, which is more than you can say about most of the fame-whore young actors today.

Pattinson sort of reminds me of Leonardo DiCaprio in a way that Leo was usually typecasts as teenagers doing this & that and then he tried to break away from such roles by doing something riskier.
