Robert Redford to play head of S.H.I.E.L.D in Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Robert Redford is definitely on for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. What a strange yet pleasant twist, right? I don’t think the move is unheard of with the popularity of comic book films, but for some reason Redford didn’t jump at me as an actor who would eventually join one.

When Redford was confirmed for the film, a rough idea of who he would be playing came via THR, “an older member of secret government agency S.H.I.E.L.D., and one source describes the role as similar to the one played by Ralph Fiennes as M’s replacement in last year’s James Bond movie SKYFALL.” Then we all said, “OH, old school Nick Fury.” But also knew that might confuse filmgoers.

When Redford recently spoke with Spinoffonline.com about the role, he was quick to correct when the site mentioned he would be playing a “senior S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.” The actor started by saying, “Well, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. The head of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Then explained why he took on the role:

The Captain America thing is just a very simple thing. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something just to be different. Something bold, different. And that felt like a good thing to do. That was it, nothing more to it than that. Well, it’s bold in terms of expectations, I guess.

Right on, Mr. Redford! Can’t wait to see him in the sequel– eye patch or no eye patch.
