Robert Redford to play head of S.H.I.E.L.D in Captain America: The Winter Soldier

04.02.2013

Robert Redford is definitely on for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. What a strange yet pleasant twist, right? I don't think the move is unheard of with the popularity of comic book films, but for some reason Redford didn't jump at me as an actor who would eventually join one.

When Redford was confirmed for the film, a rough idea of who he would be playing came via THR, "an older member of secret government agency S.H.I.E.L.D., and one source describes the role as similar to the one played by Ralph Fiennes as M’s replacement in last year’s James Bond movie SKYFALL." Then we all said, "OH, old school Nick Fury." But also knew that might confuse filmgoers.

When Redford recently spoke with Spinoffonline.com about the role, he was quick to correct when the site mentioned he would be playing a "senior S.H.I.E.L.D. agent." The actor started by saying, “Well, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. The head of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Then explained why he took on the role:

The Captain America thing is just a very simple thing. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something just to be different. Something bold, different. And that felt like a good thing to do. That was it, nothing more to it than that. Well, it’s bold in terms of expectations, I guess.

Right on, Mr. Redford! Can't wait to see him in the sequel-- eye patch or no eye patch.

He would have been a good nick fury tough... as much as I love Samuel Jackson, I cannot still picture him as Fury and I try very hard.

I would bet money that he's playing Alexander Pierce

I said this when his casting was first announced and I'll say it again. This new bit of info fits perfectly with it. I know the film is drawing is foremost adapting the Winter Soldier story arc but I'm almost positive at this point that it will also draw inspiration from the 80's "Nick Fury vs. SHIELD" miniseries. If you want to learn more about Pierce and don't mind some potential spoilers look him up here, although to be fair the article isn't the best, the middle section is what I'm talking

I don't care if it get some, albeit probably most, people confused, but I OH-SO hope to see him as original Nick Fury!! I'm down for two Fury! I love Sam Jackson, I love his Nick Fury BUT I would really like to see old school Nick Fury done right too! (because, well, that old made for tv movie wasn't doing the guy justice).

Is it a *Spoiler* if I'm speculating?

I was late to the party on the last Winter Soldier casting update, with this to say re: Redford's character. Don't wanna ruin it, if I'm right, so **spoiler** --

My money's on Redford pulling a Ra's Al Ghul (originally Ducard). He's the real mastermind, some well-known CA villain (I'm not all that familiar with them..) who's mainly the name of an elusive villain thrown around for most of the film, but who's pulling the strings of the "physical" types (Crossbones, Batroc). Makes sense in

Makes sense in my mind, with the only "villain" announcements thus far alluding to more secondary baddies (IMO, I guess). And if this film is gonna be in any way "political," there's gonna be corruption and deceit. Makes even more sense, IMO, as it's a much meatier role than is being described. On paper, the "Head of S.H.I.E.L.D." role sounds kinda boring to me. If I'm right, I think if the true nature of the role and the secrecy around it make it an attractive gig for a vet like Redford. Of course, there's likely much more to the role (either in keeping with my theory or not), and it could end up being a Tommy Lee-type cameo.

But I'm all-in for Redford being the man behind the curtain. Thoughts?

Very surprised he took the role. Great to see some veteran acting in a comic book adaptation

If I had to take a guess...

I'd say he was playing General Samuel "Happy Sam" Sawyer.

The character was Fury's commander in Sgt. Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos. In the comics he had no particular association with SHIELD (SHIELD wasn't a thing when the character was about, Fury was fighting in WWII alongside the Howling Commandoes much like Cap was in the movie). So whilst it may not be a direct link to the comic, I can see Marvel easily retconning the character a bit in the movie world to have him as Fury's

Either that or he'll be one of the shadowy council members that we saw Fury talking to in The Avengers. Or both.

Nice casting choice either way. Whilst I'm on the subject, I'd love to see more of the Howling Commandos. Shame they're stuck in WWII.

Redford could be a Sam Sawyer character. Or, the film-makers might feel that Tommy Lee Jones was the Sawyer character in the first movie. I could see Redford as head of the shadowy council. The studio would need someone of great prominence in real-life to seemingly have great prominence on the council. I like your speculation.

Tommy Lee Jones lent a fair bit to Captain America: The First Avenger, and it looks like Redford will bring a similar dynamic.

Maybe he's a former head of SHIELD, and is somehow linked to Captain's back story. I'm actually curious to see how much pre-frozen Steve Rogers is shown in the film, back in his WW2 days. More than any other character, I thought Captain America deserved 2 movies leading into Avengers. The biggest problem with the first movie (which I still liked), was them trying to cover too much story in a 2 hour film. The origins, WWII, Hydra, frozen and moved to present day, etc. I wouldn't mind the film

laughing at that quote

Redford went on to say, "Something different. Different. Bold and different. Different. Bold."

I was surprised to see Robert Redford take this role, I mean its not something we'd expect him to jump at. I give him a lot of credit for staying the course thought out this career as a dramatic actor...I want to see the Captain American sequel , more so because of him.

Hmm. I wonder if he is someone even higher than Nick Fury or if he replaces Nick Fury, which would make the Ralph Fiennes comparison relevant.

Then again Redford doesn't seem like the multiple contracts kind of guy
