Robert Rodriguez's Heavy Metal might be heading to TV; talks Sin City 3

Mar. 12, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

We haven't heard anything new about Robert Rodriguez's HEAVY METAL in almost three years. He revealed plans for the project at Coimc-Con in 2011, but there hasn't been any word on the film since. In a new interview with Screen Rant, the director says HEAVY METAL could end up on his new television network (El Rey) as a series.

“Well, now that I’ve got a television network, potentially we could go into television as well.”

Robert Rodriguez went on to talk about his plans for the animation in HEAVY METAL, and he says it will be a mix of multiple styles.

“It would be a variation of different types of animation … Classic, some hand drawn, some digital, some mixed media. That was always great about ‘Heavy Metal’ is everybody did a different thing, story dependent.”

HEAVY METAL isn't the only project Robert Rodriguez is working on. Recently we learned he's already had some conversations with Frank Miller about SIN CITY 3, and Rodriguez also gave a quick update on a third film.

“This one comes out August 22nd and then we’ve already been talking about a third so we could go as soon as we want to.”

Hopefully "as soon as we want to" doesn't mean another nine years between SIN CITY flicks. However, a lot is going to depend on how well SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR performs at the box office, and if it bombs, it might kill the possibility of another movie. I'm a big Robert Rodriguez fan, so I have my fingers crossed he gets to do both SIN CITY 3 and HEAVY METAL.

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR starring Mickey Rourke, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, Eva Green, Ray Liotta, Jeremy Piven and Juno Temple will be in theaters August 22nd, 2014.

Wish he would do a Predator TV show that would wrap up the story, i enjoyed the film for what it was but it also felt like a giant cock tease for an epic sequel, would've rather had a sequel to that then Machete or any of the Spy Kids flicks, maybe now its possible.

Boy am I a Debby-Downer. First thing I thought of was that Harold Ramis and John Candy voiced characters in the original movie.

I'm all for this if done properly. I LOVED the idea of different directors doing each segment. Hopefully that's still a possibility.

Give Heavy Metal to David Fincher. Fincher was trying to get the rights to it years ago. He wanted Guillermo del Toro & James Cameron to each direct segments with him. That's three of the best filmmakers in Hollywood today making a Heavy Metal movie! Then Rodriguez snatched up the rights.

Any news regarding Heavy Metal is good news to me. Hope it would be more like the first Heavy Metal movie instead of Heavy Metal 2000.

Agreed. The second wasn't actually too bad, but you need the format of the mag - which is several different stories by different writers/artist. I love the first film and actually I subscribe to the mag too.

Heavy Metal 2000 feels too long and storytelling got lost along the way. Heavy Metal the Movie is much better, in my opinion.

Thank god its not another kids movie he's working on, and does anyone else remember back like 7 years ago when heavy metal was going to be remade with a dream list of directors doing segments

Lets just do things one at a time

I'm OK with waiting for a Sin City 3, if its worth the wait. If I have to wait a couple decades, but in the end have 3 REALLY GOOD Sin City films, thats a better outcome than rushing and in the end having 1 or 2 good films, and having to spend the rest of our lives saying how they messed up the series with the sequels.

Just look at Linklater's "Before" series. Like a decade between each movie. And every movie was better than the one before it.
