Roberto Orci and William Shatner address Kirk/Spock Star Trek 3 rumor

09.24.2014

Just a couple of days ago, a rumor appeared that Roberto Orci has plans to reunite William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy in STAR TREK 3. The story claimed that the script would put the iconic actors on screen in their trademark roles, potentially for the last time. With the jumbled timelines introduced in J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK, it seems anything is possible. But, whether it is true is still unknown.

To clarify whether this news was legitimate or more Internet fodder, both STAR TREK 3 writer/director Roberto Orci and William Shatner himself have made comments. First up, Orci refused to confirm or deny the rumor to Trek Movie, but did say this.

"Not in my interest to confirm or deny anything because it limits my options while maintaining my integrity as a truth teller. The movie is not the movie till it is in the theater. Until then, everything is a rumor."

Shatner was a little less informative but still very direct in his Twitter feed.

Let's talk ST. I don't know anything about the current gossip. Nobody has contacted me. Right now it's just rhetoric to cause hype.

During production on STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, rumors swirled regarding the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch's character. After months of back and forth, and rumors that he was playing Khan, J.J. Abrams, Orci, and Alex Kurtzman all denied that story which turned out to be true. Fans were divided over the reveal which may have soured many on the sequel. Here's hoping we don't go down that route again with STAR TREK 3. Fans would definitely be excited to see Shatner and Nimoy back together on screen, especially with the film marking the 50th anniversary of the original series.

STAR TREK 3 is expected to premiere in 2016.

UGH! TIME TRAVEL AS A PLOT DEVICE

Ok. I dug the first or JJ reboot movie. Cool. Alternate universe full of what ifs. However, it's good to know that in the 23rd century time travel will be common place and we can all rest assured that is'f we leave a long descendant of ours a lot of money they can come back and get us, get some of Khan's blood and live forever practically.
The time for Kirk was in the JJ reboot just after Spocks' talk and pop out of the shuttle and says, "Spock, we're late. Can we go please? Oh, Hi Mr.

The time for Kirk was in the JJ reboot just after Spocks' talk and pop out of the shuttle and says, "Spock, we're late. Can we go please? Oh, Hi Mr. Spock or Spocks." Can we please have an original story already. A reboot, a Khan movie part deux. The only story line from the original series I'd like to see would be based on the Mirror, Mirror episode. A few years ago, there was a movie with all the ST captains in this alternate universe being bandy'd about. Probably the last time I got a little excited about Star Trek. Can we move along please?

I don't care one way or the other

Honestly, I haven't found the new incarnation of Trek to be all that great. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, I just think it's overrated and probably won't really stand the test of time. So I don't care if Shatner is in it or not.

I'd be far more interested in seeing a 3rd Generation television show started, on an Enterprise, set in the 25th Century.

I don't want Shatner anywhere near this. It's already bad enough Orci is at the helm of this (I wonder who he'll blame this time for poor storytelling decisions), but to include Shatner, I don't want them to go with another time travel element.

"Won't confirm or deny"

Sounds to me like the OPPOSITE of "shutting down." What are they gonna say? "YEP ITS ALL TRUE!!!" That's never happened ever.

Hmm

I couldn't actually care one way or the other, but if they can figure out a way to undo the crappy death of Kirk in "Generations", I'm all for it!

As much as it won't happen, I really hope that it does happen. Seeing Shatner and Nimoy on screen together one more time as their respected, iconic characters would be a nice touch for the final film for this new franchise.

Final film? What? Why would they stop here? And where have you heard that?

I almost kind of agree with the statement "final film". With this cast anyways. I mean, do these actors want to do more than 3? But I haven't heard anything anyways, so I'll just shut my mouth.
