RoboCop dares you to make a move in this slick poster for the remake

Sep. 12, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Many were underwhelmed by the first trailer for Jose Padilha's ROBOCOP starring Joel Kinnaman, Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman, and Samuel L. Jackson. I can admit it looks cool but very superficial. From what I can see it is a generic and glossy take on the classic Paul Verhoeven movie. But, maybe I am wrong and we will be pleasantly surprised when it hits theaters next year.

To go along with the trailer we now have a look at the official teaser poster for ROBOCOP. Joel Kinnaman takes center stage in the sleek, black suit and glowing red visor. I don't know why, but this reminds me a hell of a lot of an Apple advertisement. I wonder if Alex Murphy gets WiFi?

In 2028, multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and honest cop doing his best to fight crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured by a car bomb outside his home, OmniCorp utilize their knowledge in robotics to save Murphy's life. Murphy returns to the streets of his city with new abilities and issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Kinnaman was quite good on the recently cancelled THE KILLING as well as the Swedish crime flick SNABBA CASH. The rest of the cast here is solid, so I don't know why I am so underwhelmed by the movie. Maybe it is because nothing can live up to the original ROBOCOP, but I kind of wish the trailer got me a little more excited.

ROBOCOP opens February 7, 2014.

If Michael Keaton and Gary Oldman are involved, I'm so in. Trailer is cool.

It's a remake, not the same film again, and it actually looks a bit different while still inherently Robocop. I see no reason to bitch without seeing the movie. With regards to the poster - well who uses the word "creep" about bad guys these days (or in the near future) anyway? Admittedly just "Your Move" sounds a bit 'chess by mail' but I'm willing to give this movie a chance to impress me at least. I love all things Robocop, and hope this movie isn't a disappointment.

I found the trailer to be pretty underwhelming. Not that the movie looked bad necessarily, I just couldn't wrap my head around why they made certain changes. The one thing that irritates me the most, is why does he have one human hand? With the original Robocop was in one full-on robotic suit, yet with the remake he still has the one free human hand. Why? It just looks silly to me.

Did someone in the marketing department think that keeping the word "creep" in the oft-quoted line might harm ticket sales or something? "Did that poster call me a creep? Well, fuck you, movie!"

PG-13 RoboCop: even its tagline has no balls.

After being so very disappointed by Man of Steel but enjoying Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters quite a bit Ive learned that one should set aside expectations as best as possible. I dont think Ive ever seen a movie Ive enjoyed on the scale I enjoyed something like Aliens, Terminator 2 and Speed when I went in to it with high expectations. Its no coincidence that those movies came out in a time when I had very limited exposure to the marketing build up.

Why does Robocop's eye slit curve up at the ends? Makes it look like his helmet is smiling.

RoboCop FowardSlash ForwardSlash.

I wonder if they'll do a poster with the tagline "I will notify a rape crisis center". Great establishing moment for RoboCop in the movie showing the combination of his brutality and adherence to upholding the law; wonder how that will be handled in the new one.

Yep, They Fucked It!

Only if Darren Aronofsky had stayed on this project, that was the only way this could have been a worthy installment, I mean the original is a near perfect film.

Please stop the remakes

Why could t this just be a sequel or a spin off? Or just left alone. Five years from now people will still rewatch the 80's classic and forget that this was made.

response to scoot: though weller wasnt really known before robocop, but what sold it was it was something new. thanks to CGI, its hard to impress audiences, and story idea that are recycled arent helping. If there never was a film like robocop before then maybe audiences would probably except it more. But i agree with another comment made. doesnt seem like a cyborg, just a man in the G.I. Joe suit

Can see what they're going for - a greater emphasis on the human vs machine dilemma, which is meaty dramatic territory. That said I'm sick of humour being the first thing to go when these properties are rebooted.

POTENTIAL SPOILER: By the by, I think the trailer gives away a twist in the script. Notice how Murphy's partner is apparently the first one to die... what's the bet that Murph will have to face his partner who has been similarly mechanised?

Take the original suit, put it at the same angle and it would look exactly the same. Get over it

He wouldn't be able to hold Weller's gun let alone armor. Not worthy.
