Rock 'Em Sock 'Em robots movie to battle Real Steel?

What the hell? Until now, I was pretty sure that REAL STEEL, the robot boxing movie with Hugh Jackman, was loosely based on the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em robot toy of my childhood, but I guess not. Apparently, thinking that fighting robots are the new vampires between STEEL, TRANSFORMERS and IRON MAN, Mattel’s ROCK ‘EM is apparently trying to get its own film off the ground.

This news comes from Pajiba’s generally reliable Hollywood Cog source, and claims that TROY’s Wolfgang Peterson is currently attached to the project, described as “Gladiator meets Iron Man, and it’s the human story of one robot that becomes part human, part robot.”

I’m not sure what the hell that last sentence meant, but OK. A robot gladiator match seems kind of way cooler than simple robot boxing, but with Wolfgang at the helm, and the fact that this is fundamentally toy-based, this is probably far from a good idea.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, it's possible this all might turn out to be nothing, and I bet with enough negative press the public might be able to kill this idea before it takes off.

Extra Tidbit: You couldn't actually title a film, ROCK 'EM, SOCK 'EM ROBOT could you? If not, then what's the point of the brand association at all?
