Roger Ebert shares his top 20 films of 2011

Dec. 20, 2011by: Niki Stephens

The end of the year lists are on the way. Not only do I expect to see them from critics, I also anticipate seeing what some of our readers really loved this year in film.

I'm going to begin with Roger Ebert's top 20 films of 2011. I think he's really put a good list together here. Nice to see films like DRIVE, SHAME, TAKE SHELTER, among others getting some love from the critic. Check it out below. For his thoughts on each of his choices, head here.

Ebert's Intro:

"Making lists is not my favorite occupation. They inevitably inspire only reader complaints. Not once have I ever heard from a reader that my list was just fine, and they liked it. Yet an annual Best Ten list is apparently a statutory obligation for movie critics. My best guess is that between six and ten of these movies won't be familiar. Those are the most useful titles for you, instead of an ordering of movies you already know all about."

"One recent year I committed the outrage of listing 20 movies in alphabetical order. What an uproar! Here are my top 20 films, in order of approximate preference."

1. A SEPARATION

2. SHAME

3. THE TREE OF LIFE

4. HUGO

5. TAKE SHELTER

6. KINYARWANDA

7. DRIVE

8. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS

9. LE HAVRE

10. THE ARTIST

11. MELANCHOLIA

12. TERRI

13. THE DESCENDANTS

14. MARGARET

15. MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE

16. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2

17. TRUST

18. LIFE, ABOVE ALL

19. THE MILL AND THE CROSS

20. ANOTHER EARTH

Tidbit - 3 best for me are a tie between Another Earth, Drive, and Hanna. Although there are still a lot I need to see.

Extra Tidbit: Drive. It's one of a few movies that I really feel and sympathize for the main character. Major kudos to Ryan Gosling and his terrific performance.

Drive, Warrior, Super 8, Hanna are some of my tops. I still need to see a bunch though (like Shame, Hugo, Tree of Life, Moneyball, 50/50...)

This is one of few years we don't have the classic ramp up of oscar contenders in december, but the limited memory of the academy is sad....you had the Warrior in Sept as well as Drive, which Ebert was one of few that included it. I just HATE that people forget movies that are just as good are released in the early months...

Another Earth

Glad to see the love for "Another Earth". I don't understand the hate, I love it to death. It's not on par with "The Fountain" but I really enjoyed it. People judged it way too hard and came up with bullshit reasons to judge it. The point of the movie was to make you think, assholes!

Been compiling my list all year, and so far my top films are:

1. Hanna
2. 13 Assassins
3. Drive

Those are my top 3. Most people would probably argue about Hanna, but I think the film hasn't gotten enough recognition. The other two are fairly obvious. Yes, 13 Assassins came out in 2010, but didn't make it's way here to the states until this year, so I am throwing it onto the list.

I saw 'Shame'. That's two hours of my life I'm never getting back. Yes, Fassbender is a great actor, but when you put him in a ham-fisted, art house production that pretty much doesn't surprise you in any way whatsoever, you're just wasting everyone's time.
Except for Roger Ebert's obviously.

I don't understand....

Why people are saying Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? It hasn't come out yet, and its not just a remake of a very recent film, its just re-shot in English so us Americans don't have to read while watching the movie. Nothing about the America version is new or original, the cast watched the original and acted it out the exact same way...
