Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin plan to reboot Stargate as a big screen trilogy

Sep. 6, 2013by:

STARGATE was a successful movie back in 1994 that should have launched a big screen franchise. Instead, STARGATE became a series of popular television series that lasted ten years alongside two other live action series, an animated series, and two TV movies. But the series has never been quite big enough to cross from that cult/SyFy level of fandom and back into the big leagues of science fiction movies.

Co-creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin have been talking about ways to make a new STARGATE movie for years and have just made headway to get a sequel to INDEPENDENCE DAY, titled ID FOREVER, scheduled to hit theaters July 3rd, 2015, after that, the filmmakers plan to not only work on a new STARGATE, but three new STARGATE films.

Here is what Emmerich told Digital Spy:

We went to MGM, who has the rights, and proposed to them to do a sequel, but as a reboot and reboot it as a movie and then do three parts. Pretty soon well have to look for a writer and start.

I know that hearing the movie will be split in three smacks of money-grubbing, but there isn't an effective way to make a sequel to the first film since Kurt Russell and James Spader look, well, twenty years older. Emmerich sounded less than enthused with making a direct sequel to the shows or the first movie, so reboot is the only way. And, with a project this big, the only way you can keep budget down is to guarantee a profit. Spreading the costs over three movies triples the box office and makes it more appealing to investors.

With ID FOREVER set for 2015, I wouldn't bank on seeing the new STARGATE trilogy begin production until 2016 for release a year later at the earliest. Assuming it happens at all.

I wish someone would finish the SGU story. By far the best of the 3 tv series and the least appreciated. No surprise since it was a totally character driven show and got dumped on due to less action than the SG1 and Atlantis. Robert Carlysle and Louis Ferreira were brilliant leads.

As a big Stargate fan, I Love this news! Even though normally i consider reboots a cheap way to go, i kind of don't mind this one. The reason behind it, is that i always thought Stargate was a great concept, even though it never actually pushed the envelope of what was possible with this premise. Also the movie as well as the earlier series has not dated well.

The premise of the story lends itself perfectly for a multi planet universe full of exciting new characters, monsters, cultures

The premise of the story lends itself perfectly for a multi planet universe full of exciting new characters, monsters, cultures etc. etc. It also serves up a beautifull way of exploring these new worlds, by ourselves, present day normal humans, which makes it a fantasy grounded in our own reality, which helpes it making it more relatable.

I Do hope they'll keep main ingredients; Ancient Egyptian theme, a sense of the excitment that comes from exploring new worlds, and most of all: FUN!! It doesn't need to be dark or gritty, it just needs to have that adventurerous en humorous tone that Stargate (the earlier seasons of the series(Richard Dean Anderson was a hoot) especially had, but they need to broaden it to a epic scale.

(pardon my english, it's not my first language)

If it's a reboot with a dash of reimagining then it could be cool. The series probably said as much about the concept as could be explored, but if they throw something new into the mix there's no reason why a new movie or movies couldn't work. You don't really need the original cast unless they were planning on a "decade later" scenario where a new team finds one or two of the original team stuck on a distant world or somesuch. A clean slate with the franchise wouldn't hurt though.

First, it wouldn't make much sense to bring back Russel and Spader because O'Neil has since retired and joined the department of homeworld security and Jackson is still an active member of Sg-1 (when last we saw), not potato shaped like spader is now.

Yeah, and as much as I love the man, screw Russel. Richard Dean Anderson is Jack O'Neil, you heathens.

Wait, there is Stargate animated series??? Still, as for the movie itself, just leave it be.

Dear Hollywood

Instead of remaking every film I've ever seen, why don't you try more book adaptations, comic books or manga?

There's no reason they couldn't do a sequel in the style of what Tron: Legacy was to Tron. That seems way more interesting than just another reboot.
The trilogy news doesn't surprise me. At this point I just expect that every big blockbuster movie green-lit by Hollywood is meant to be a series.

They exit on the other side only to find the Interstellar bunch waiting. A fellow schmoe pointed out the similarities between the synopsis for that and Stargate.

It could be cool to see this turned into a trilogy. I remember seeing this in theatres and thinking it was awesome (I was a kid at the time). But why reboot at all? i'm pretty sure the film left the door open for a sequel anyways. Fair enough if Emmerich is too proud to acknowledge the success of the TV shows, but just continue it from where the movie left off. it's 20 years later and for whatever reason Earth is sending a team back through the Stargate (chock it up to a search for new

And they go back and it turns out Spader has become some sort of war lord or something and presumably runs a legal firm with William Shatner.

oh wow a trilogy! What a daring idea! It's especially great that even without a writer they already know their story will take three movies.

And why a reboot and not just a sequel? If they can make a sequel of ID4, they can do a Stargate one! Just bring the frikindoor, Kurt Russell and some new characters and do it. Its weird Stargate didnt have a lot of sequels by now. It was a success if Im not wrong....

"Pretty soon well have to look for a writer"

You don't need a writer. Just get on the phone to Hollywood's resident sci-fi keyboard monkey, Bob Orci, he'll be able to fuck it right up without even trying.
