Roland Emmerich destroying the world with Shakespeare?

Famed catastrophe composer Roland Emmerich has chosen his next project, and it's not what you'd think. It’s a period drama called ANONYMOUS about how Shakespeare's plays might have been written by a 17th century Earl. Even stranger, it appears the earth remains intact in the process.

"It's a mix of a lot of things: it's a historical thriller because it's about who will succeed Queen Elizabeth and the struggle of the people who want to have a hand in it. It's the Tudors on one side and the Cecils on the other, and in between [the two] is the Queen. Through that story we tell how the plays written by the Earl of Oxford ended up labeled 'William Shakespeare'."

I don’t get it, how does the world end? Does Shakespeare write a play that predicts the apocalypse? Does Queen Elizabeth release the Loch Ness monster and it levels the earth? Am I missing something here?

In any case, the film is already being cast as Vanessa Redgrave (DEEP IMPACT), David Thewlis (Remus Lupin of HARRY POTTER) and Rhys Ifans (PIRATE RADIO) are all on board for the period piece as The Queen, William Cecil and The Earl respectively.

It’s always interesting to see a director change course this drastically, but this is like going from sixth gear to reverse on the freeway. Hopefully Emmerich won’t lose his transmission in the process.

Extra Tidbit: For a second I thought he was making a movie about 4chan. That would have had apocalypse written all over it.
