Roland Emmerich has some Independence Day sequel details for you

Mar. 26, 2013by:

The last bit of news we heard about the sequels to INDEPENDENCE DAY was September when the titles were revealed to be ID FOREVER PART 1 and 2. Not the greatest title in the world, but it'll do. Now, with WHITE HOUSE DOWN poised to be pretty damn good, director Roland Emmerich is bringing some details about what to expect from the new films.

Emmerich revealed that he wrote the scripts with original INDEPENDENCE DAY cohort Dean Devlin and they are currently being rewritten by WHITE HOUSE DOWN scribe James Vanderbilt. Here is the concept for the new movies, which take place 20 years after the first movie after a distress call from the aliens is answered, sending reinforcements to our planet for another attack.

The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back and they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us thats 20 or 25 years.

Nice way to work in the fact the movie will be made two decades after the original. This would also allow the cast to be replaced with younger characters if they cannot sway Will Smith to return. Bill Pullman has already committed to coming back as President Thomas Whitmore. But, with the Earth having been decimated by the aliens, how would our cities look twenty years in the future?

Its a changed world. Its like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We dont know how to duplicate it because its organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane."

Emmerich also promises that with two films being planned that ID FOREVER PART ONE will not likely end on a happy note.

The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again [from the aliens].

I loved the original INDEPENDENCE DAY when it opened and hope this movie retains the fun action of the original. Lately, Emmerich has gotten in his own way with over the top movies like 2012, 10,000 BC, and THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. WHITE HOUSE DOWN has been getting a lot of good buzz (the trailer premiers later today!), so I hope this actually happens.

Bring back Goldblum.

I tend to yell that a lot. This time it just happens to be relevant.

Goldblum's character without a doubt needs to come back (with his dad).

"Bill Pullman has already committed to coming back as President Thomas Whitmore"
I'm confused, if it's 20 years later, how would Bill Pullman still be president? Or is his character coming back as like a consultant or something to the new new president because he's been through it all before? Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'd put my money on Whitmore as an elder statesman.

If done right, this would be pretty good. I enjoyed the first one. Also, they need to bring back Jeff Goldblum.

I think I'm broken, because I really hate Independence Day. I'm pretty sure, seeing that everyone else loves it, I'm the problem, not the film, but there you have it.

That said? These sound like they could, at the very least, be kind of entertaining. Maybe? Seeing how the events of the first movie could have changed society sounds kind of cool.

Hopefully the original cast returns otherwise WTF is the point of doing a sequel?

If people like Jeff Goldblum so much

that they want to see him in both Jurrasic Park 4 and ID4 2, why is it that for the past twenty years he's been doing mostly TV? Seriously: the Fly came out in 1986, Jurassic Park came out in 1993, ID4 came out in 1996 and The Lost World came out in 1997. What else of note has he done?

I remember seeing him in the Robin Williams-starring "Man of the Year" and in the Harrison Ford-starring rom-com "Morning Glory".

In the first one, we followed a bunch of normalish people through an alien invasion. I fear that the alternate history setting may serve to damage my connection with the events of the sequels.

I like the first one

as far as alien invasion movies go, this is one of the better ones. Its hard to do a reallyy good invasion film that isnt covered in lame plot devices and loop holes. All this one had really was the hacking alien technology thing. I saw it as an updated version of the classic HG Wells story where they were killed by germs. Well in the near 21st century, germs were replaced by computer viruses. It was kinda clever. And being in the 90s, most of the mainstream audience wouldnt realize this like

I dont need to see a sequel, but if you were, have as many of the original cast in it as possible. Even if its juts cameos.

BTW, best invasion movie ever is still "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (I also have a soft spot for "The Faculty")

ID4 is one of those movies that has aged badly. It was cool seeing it in the theaters when it was all the hype, but now I just cant sit through 2 hrs of an over-acting cast that includes Will Smith and Randy Quaid. Pullman and Goldblum are decent but Smith and Quaid really ruin that film for me. Lets also face it, Emmerich isn't exactly the greatest director in the world either. He knows how to blow up civilization, but he sure has a hard time telling a coherent story.

Welcome to Earth, bitch

I honestly didn't think the first one deserved a sequel, or two. But considering how poorly Battle Los Angeles did on a full scale alien invasion, ID actually stands up to it quite nicely. I'm just so "blah" about a continuing story for this.

You'd think by the third movie the aliens would have wised up to us launching our attacks on July 4th though...

I loved the first one for sheer large-scale entertainment value, but there's no doubt that it's pretty irredeemably a product of the '90s (not that that's a bad thing per se). So I hope the sequel updates it a little, while still giving us the characters and action we loved. While Goldblum and Smith should come back, natch, I want more ex-President Bill Pullman kicking alien ass!

I'll probably torrent it after the DVD has been ripped, but other than that, I really have to go out of my way to give half a rat's ass about this.
