Roland Emmerich is readying two versions of the Independence Day sequel script in case Will Smith signs up

10.24.2013by:

From the sounds of it, Fox is really holding out hope that Will Smith is going to change his mind and sign up for the INDEPENDENCE DAY sequel currently being developed. Despite numerous refusals from Smith, Emmerich is still playing it safe and including the first film's star in the screenplay for ID4EVER. Well, at least one version of the screenplay.

According to IndieWire, Emmerich and James Vanderbilt have been polishing the latest drafts of the screenplay and mentioned that the version with Will Smith in it is looking good. Whether this means it is looking good as the one to get produced is unclear.

The biggest question from Emmerich's comments is that when asked about the film's status, he sighed and said it was a daily battle over budget, schedules, and actors. We have already learned that Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are keen to return and that Michael B. Jordan has also been looked at as a possible new lead. Whether Jordan would be replacing Will Smith or acting alongside him remains to be seen.

I look back at INDEPENDENCE DAY as one of the most fun times I have had at the movies as a kid. It feels like it has been too long for the sequel to get made, but I will still be in line opening weekend to check it out, with or without Will Smith.

ID4EVER is slated for a July 3, 2015 release.

Hmmmm

I'm not so sure about this...to write two stories with the difference being that Will Smith is in one and not the other??? Maybe it's just me, but there is only one version of the story that is the best...it could be with Will Smith or without him. People don't write books with the idea that "so-and-so" might be cast as the lead actor in the movie version. Just write the best script and let that determine if Will Smith's character will be in it. Who cares if it has a big name actor in it?

I'm all about being pulled into the story, not which actor's abs are flashing on the screen.

Make up your mind!

C'mon man. You're either in or your out. Why put people through all the extra work of having to write two versions of the script? What a diva.

I'm a Jeff Goldblum fan, but it won't be the same if Will Smith doesn't come back.

As the yrs have passed since this movie came out, I truly believe Both Will Smith and Randy Quaid tarnish this film a lot. . Let Will Smith stay home on this one.

Anyone want to bet?

I'd bet the reason Will Smith isn't signed on is because he won't do it unless they cast his son in it as well. Goddamn nepotism!
Frankly, though, I don't care what they do as long as I get to see Jeff Goldblum hacking into alien computers again.

If Will Smith has any brains,

he'll be digging Roland Emmerich's phone number out of the depths of his iPhone. The man needs a major hit after the debacle that was AFTER EARTH.

That said, it had better be a freakin' amazing script for me to be interested in an ID4 sequel.

I would like to see Smith back for continuity reasons, but I think it's pretty selfish of him if he is still thinking about joining the film at this point and because of that delay, the writers have to write a completely different script because of said delay. Smith should just make up his mind already. The smarter move would be for him to actually join the film and be apart of something established, instead of making another Another Earth fiasco film with his kid.
