Ron Howard confirmed as Han Solo director

06.22.2017

After Phil Lord and Christopher Miller left the HAN SOLO movie this week news circulated that Ron Howard was Lucasfilm’s top choice to take over the remainder of shooting on the movie. Now after only a short period of time, Deadline has now confirmed that the Oscar-winning director will indeed finish the film so it can make it’s May 2018 release.

Disney is planning to make the announcement official shortly, and Howard will set off for Pinewood Studios immediately to get things back on track.

The HAN SOLO movie has been in production for months, and word is there was only three weeks left in shooting when Lord and Miller exited the project. However, the problem that arises with this shift comes from the DGA (Director's Guild of America). Given how much of the film is already done there is most likely not a lot left to do on the film (excluding reshoots this fall). When all is said and done, Miller and Lord will have done the most work on the movie, and chances are the majority of what we see will be their handiwork. But with their exit, and Howard's entrance, there is the issue of who will get the final "Directed by" credit. Chances are high Lord and Miller will receive the credit, but we could see some "Additional scenes" accredited to Howard, or something along those lines.

Like I said yesterday, Howard is a fine choice to finish the job. This isn't so much a matter of finding someone with a certain style so much as it is about having a seasoned vet come in and tidy things up. Howard is great with ensembles, which should make for an easy transition given the size of the cast on this movie. All in all I think the movie is in safe hands...but it also means Tom Hanks may make an appearance.

The HAN SOLO movie is set for May 2018.

If the rumors on KK having issues with the performances is true, it may be a more-major change than we think.

Personally my fingers are crossed that there may be a few casting swaps - like maybe we'll get Bryce Dallas Howard to step in for Emilia Clarke.

Maybe I missed it, but I've read like 10+ stories about this, some of which spoke directly with reps from the studio and offered pretty detailed reasons for the exit (that Lord and Miller were changing the town of the movie from a western to broader comedy, that they were cutting entire scenes from the script, that they were rewriting large chunks of dialogue) but none of them have mentioned anything about the studio being unhappy with any of the performances.

He's a solid choice....

I don't know if he'd be the best guy to do it from scratch, but he's a very experienced director who's made some great films (and even the mediocre ones wee solid). If anyone can keep this from being a mess, I'd put my money on him.

Shooting the movie is only half the job. The editing and post production part is where a movie takes shape and can radically be altered, for better or worse. The original first cut of Star Wars was 3 hours and apparently sucked. It's Spielberg and De Palma (and I think even Howard) who suggested ideas and Lucas' wife ended up saving the film in the editing room. To me, Howard's directing style is pretty formalistic and conventional but this might be a good thing for a Star Wars movie and he

Guy hasn't made a good movie in 10+ years

I'll go and say The Missing or Cinderella Man were his last good movies... Since then he has been on this boring downward spiral and keeps getting worse. He had such a great career in the 80s and 90s and then stopped trying.

Miguel_montes, I feel like Rush had the potential to be amazing, but ended up telling a compelling story in the most generic way possible, relying heavily on lazy story telling devices like infodumping, extensive voice over narration, and unnecessary flashbacks. Bruhl was good and Hemsworth was charming, but about what you'd expect, but there's no doubt in my mind that the movie had the capacity to be something much more special than it was.

"Rush", the racing movie with Chris Hemsworth, was amazing.

It sounds like it will be a challenge to salvage this movie. That said, Ron Howard is good when he has the right material, and Lawrence Kasden does his best work with Lucasfilm. Rogue One turned out ok in the end, despite all its production problems. I'm keeping my expectations low, but they could still pull it off.

Could be the film to get Howard out of his rut, the guy is hugely talented and can see him working well with this.

YAWN, Totally wrong for this project

The whole movie was a bad idea to begin with, leave some mystery about the characters.

But Ron Howard? Mister Bland? This thing is in real trouble.

I really like Ron Howards' style in his better films. But it won't matter if the script and concept is shit.

Hmmm....

This sounds to me like they are going to scrap what they shot and do a whole new thing. Interesting.

After thinking about it, I wouldn't shit on Howard. He's a Consummate pro. He'll get it done and it'll look great. Sometimes you just gotta do the work.
