Ron Howard talks Dark Tower delays, Javier Bardem not a sure thing

05.25.2011

I have a sinking, or joyous feeling, I'm not sure which, that THE DARK TOWER is going to be one of the projects sent to burn in development hell for eternity. The scope is too massive to be executed cost-effectively, the idea is too bizarre to have mainstream appeal, and those handling it don't seem particularly suited for the job.

The man I'm referencing is Ron Howard, who is of course a capable director, but I never saw him as a fit for this project. But despite my, and Hollywood's, pessimism, he maintains THE DARK TOWER uber-project is marching on. He recently spoke to EW about the ongoing saga.

“We had to pull back to our September start date due to budget delays and ongoing story development and logistical issues, but Dark Tower is moving forward. We’re thinking of starting in early spring now. I can’t really say who’ll be in it yet, but Javier Bardem has shown a great deal of interest. We’ll know by the end of the summer, when our flashing green light goes solid.”

Everyone, including us, reported a few weeks back that Bardem had officially signed on for the part, so it seems strange that the director is claiming he "can't say who will be in it yet" and that Bardem has merely shown "interest." He continues:

“There are elements of the Dark Tower saga that are more personal and can be best dealt with on television. TV allows you to roll out details of the characters in a more methodical way.”

Now THIS contradicts previous reports that the TV mini-series segments would be scrapped for budget concerns, and they would have to be content with a few films. Or even just one film and seeing how it did at the box office, which for as many Dark Tower fans are out there, I can't see this pulling in tons of cash, especially not enough to bankroll three films and a TV series set in a fantastical realm.

Should they just give up the hunt, or is there a way to make this work?

Extra Tidbit: Some things are best left to paper.

Let's be honest...

Howard's record as of late doesn't exactly scream, "bankable!"

I'm with Uni on this. Del Toro... 'nuther story all together.

Tassi said everything note perfect, this project is insane and needs someone like a Peter Jackson or Guiellermo Del Toro to even hope to get off the ground on the right creative footing. Not those guys specifically just someone with a greater love of the source material and a keen non bland directors eye, Howard possesses none of that. I don't think everything needs to be turned into a movie but it would be nice for the world to love the Dark Tower as much as I and the other fans do. This story

This story is so good and has the most satisfying ending (for me at least) out of an 7 book epic series (sorry HP). Is animation or the possibility of this being a cable series on HBO, Starz or Showtime so much of a gamble that none of those option have ever been considered? If it takes 20 years so be it but there is no way the Dark Tower with this current group of people will be anywhere near as epic, dark, poignant or fantastical as it needs to be.

Stop Now!

Okay I have never been a big King fan but after hearing all the stuff about the Dark Tower for years and then the movie possibilities, I decided to give it a go.

I am almost through book 2 now and all I can say is stop...just stop now and save yourself tons of money and heartache.

I must say the story is nothing like I imagined, but I am still very interested and enjoying it.

But come on attempting to make a movie out of the first book would be almost impossible. Most of it happens in

But come on attempting to make a movie out of the first book would be almost impossible. Most of it happens in Rolands head, and voice overs can work, ie Dune but not on the scale you would need for this.

The dumb execs would end up adding a sidekick so Roland could explain everything to him...and thus the audience.

And I am sorry Roland is described as basically a skeleton or ghost, he is so thin and sickly. Bardem is neither of those things, unless he pulled a Bale body modification for the part...and I just don't see it.

The Dark Tower happens too much in peoples heads for this to ever translate well. Just drop it now..Please!

Man I wish J. J. didn't walk away from this. At least he respected the books. So much so that he knew how hard it would be to pull off on screen.

the only way it will work

This thing needs to be a series or mini-series on HBO, Showtime, etc. That would give them time to roll the story out slowly and starting building a fanbase and they won't have a lot of the limitations of network TV.

KILL THIS

As a huge Stephen King fan and a bigger Dark Tower series fan, I believe Ron Howard needs to walk away as fast as possible before I see a brilliant story raped beyond repair. He simply is not right for the job and, unless it's HBO or Showtime, I have no interest in a network television trainwreck. And Akiva Goldsman? Are you insane - with such garbage as Batman and Robin, I Am Legend, Lost In Space and others . . . I am simply disgusted. I want no part of this whatsoever.

he sounds like he's keeping an optimistic face about the project publicly to garner undeserved interest. This has pretty much been doomed from the start. I agree, no one attached is suited for, or seems to care much, about the source material. Let this one die, Ron. Please!
