Rooney Mara going from Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to Spike Lee's Oldboy?

09.28.2011by:

The legions of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO fans will find out in December just how well Rooney Mara embodies the character of rebellious hacker Lisbeth Salander, but filmmakers are already trying to lock up the actress for other high-profile projects.

For example, Twitch says that Mara is being "targeted" for the female lead in Spike Lee's version of OLDBOY.

The brutal revenge tale already has Josh Brolin as a man seeking payback when he's released from a mysterious 15-year imprisonment. Mara would play the young chef he falls for during the search for his captors.

Christian Bale is reportedly being sought to play the villain.

Lee and screenwriter Mark Protosevich (I AM LEGEND) are supposedly sticking closer to the manga source material, which was already adapted into a deservedly acclaimed film from South Korean director Park Chan-Wook.

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith had also once intended their own Americanized take on the dizzying story (after FAST AND FURIOUSes director Justin Lin departed).

Extra Tidbit: Anyone actually read the manga and can explain the differences between that and the 2003 movie?

I'm not reacting to any one comment, but I am personally sick of all this remake hate. There are some great remakes out there.
The Departed was a remake, True Grit, Scarface, 3:10 to Yuma, The Ring, Ocean's 11, Fistful of Dollars, Let Me In, and the Thing.
And those are just ones I can come up with off the top of my head.
So, I have high hopes that both the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo AND Oldboy will be quality films.

I agree, there are a lot of great remakes. Including most of the ones you mentioned. I just can't imagine that Oldboy will be one of them.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of remakes suck. I just saw the remake of Straw Dogs - totally unnecessary. But not because it was a remake, because it was an uninspired movie.
And I understand that favorite films are touchy subjects (if they remade Memento I may be singing a different tune). But many people express such disgust at the mere suggestion of a remake that it is getting to be annoying.

I'm okay with most of these that are on your list, but I like when a remake can bring something fresh to the table, for instance I will never see Let Me In because it's just the swedish version but in English... totally unnecessary and undeserving of any credit. If you reshoot a fantastic movie, most likely you will end up with the same result, but is that all right. The rest of these do have some freshness to them and feel like it did want to be something else, there was a reason to make it

With Oldboy I don't know, maybe if the source material is different than the 2003 movie I would be down with it, but I just can't see how a Hollywood remake would not cop-out at the end of this story

Cool.

I would be thrilled if The Bale were cast as the villain.

It's mango, not manga. And it's not literature, it's fruit.

She really is turning into Hollywood's "girl who ends up in unsavoury sexual relationships", isn't she?

I honestly can't wait for her to star in the remakes of Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby.

I have a feeling that this is going to be the most spoiled movie of the year if they go with the Chan-Wook ending.

Sigh. Insert protestations about my favorite movie being ruined by a crappy Hollywood remake here.

Seriously I just can't see this working. The only good I can see coming out of this is maybe that it would raise awareness of the original over here in the States.

wow another gritty part for her, if she can handle Dragon Tattoo then this should be a breeze for her. Guessing they won't remake the other 2 books though?

Still not thrilled with Spike Lee doing this, but I can get behind this cast. Of course, having seen the original, gonna be weird knowing the relationship between Brolin and Mara's characters. However, if she fails to do the Lisbeth character justice, then forget about it.
