RR talks Predators

04.25.2009

After a pair of somewhat painful matches between ALIENS and PREDATORS, Fox is taking the xenomorphs out of the picture and focusing on the extraterrestrial hunters. They even gave the new project a release date of July 7th, 2010, and put filmmaker Robert Rodriguez in charge.

But Rodriguez suddenly seems pretty busy lately -- he's supposedly finally expanding MACHETE from faux trailer to full feature, and Dimension already slotted a date of April 16, 2010 for his sci-fi project NERVERACKERS, so he should be cranking on that soon. And he's been producing RED SONJA. That's a pretty packed schedule. What's the real story?

AICN has fellow Austinite Rodriguez's ear, and got some actual answers. As was previously speculated, the whole thing came about when someone at Fox dug up an old PREDATOR sequel script that Rodriguez did many years ago, and decided to get him kickstarting the franchise again. The new PREDATORS might use some elements of Rodriguez's initial treatment (which was considered prohibitively expensive at the time), but the assumption seems to be that they'll start fresh with a "re-invention".

But perhaps most important is that Rodriguez isn't directing -- not entirely, anyway. As he says: "The idea is that I'd produce PREDATORS here at Troublemaker Studios, so that I can feel free to walk to the PREDATORS soundstage, pick up a camera and co-shoot the coolest scenes."

Read the rest of RR's ideas RIGHT HERE.

Extra Tidbit: Guess the BARBARELLA remake ain't happening. And where's MADMAN?

Just like Tarantino...

...he'll put his name on any piece of shit for a few bucks! His passion/creativity were gone when he no longer needed to sell his blood for his film's budgets.
A remake of Predator is as needed as a RoboCop one. (NOT AT ALL)

NO REBOOT!! SEQUEL ONLY!!

Screw this reboot idea. Rodriguez, I thought you were better than that. Don't turn into those hacks over at Platinum Dunes who just pump out remakes for the big opening weekends. Just do a sequel with an original story not related to Predator 1 or 2. That would be fine, and the fans would love ya for it. Rebooting/remaking a movie made only in 1987 is retarded.

I love Predator and it's franchise, It hurts to give this a Red Rating. I'm open towards a new movie, just please don't rape me anymore.

BORING!

We know the Predator. We've seen him and his kin over many a film... Sigh. Make something NEW. RR is a hack!

I always thought Predator had a few more movies in it, and despite the AVP franchise I'd still say it does. Setting/story aside, who would you like to see going up against Predators? Bruce Willis would be cool, maybe with Nicolas Cage as a backstabbing slimeball, cos every Predator movie needs a backstabbing slimeball. Would probably end up a terrible film, but at least would be fun to watch.

Just watched the original. Still awesome.

I guess if SOMEONE had to remake this I'm glad it's Bob.

Pardon my ignorance but what would the difference between a sequel and a reboot be?

I didn't thought the first 2 Predator movies were related... what storyline would a sequel have to follow?

I don't know where i stand on this one. I am looking forward to Machete, and I like RR, but I just don't care for a remake. Like the dude below me said, he should make a sequel. I don't know though... Could be cool??

NO REMAKE!!

CHRIST! What the hell is going on with he remakes?! Just make a damn sequel. If Rodriguez is down for the idea of a "reboot", then I guess he's not nearly as cool as I thought he was. Don't have to call it Predator 3, but at least establish it as a sequel.

With the exception of "Machete" I'm not jonesing for Rodriguez's projects much. But I will say that once he DOES get working on his heavy slate beyond pre-production, the rest will come along quite quickly.

Cool though, to think his idle fan-boy mind may have influenced one of the more beloved sci-fi action franchises of the last quarter century.
