Ruben Fleischer the latest director to attempt a Spy Hunter adaptation
Here we go again...Apparently, the long-gestating adaptation of the popular '80's driving game SPY HUNTER has now fallen in the hands of director Ruben Fleischer (GANGSTER SQUAD, ZOMBIELAND) with an eye towards restarting the development process from scratch. Most of you will remember the "dream team" of John Woo and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson being affiliated with the project for a long time, with Johnson even providing his name and likeness to the Playstation 2 game, Spy Game: Nowhere to Run. Woo and The Rock eventually moved on to other projects, while Paul W.S. Anderson threatened us with the possibility of taking over, but unceremoniously moved on to DEATH RACE.
The game has gone through many incarnations and platforms and is poised to strike again next month with SPY HUNTER for Nintendo 3DS. No word on who may star or what the story may be (I mean, really, the game is pretty bare bones...you drive a car and blow shit up). With the development hell this property has already been stuck in it'll be surprising to see it even move forward, but you never know. Personally, I just don't see the need for it, but perhaps there are fans out there that can defend its necessity? Let's hear it!
More as this develops. Fleischer's GANGSTER SQUAD is slated to hit theaters on January 11, 2013.
