Ruffalo joins DiCaprio

Nov. 27, 2007by:

As I was reading the novel SHUTTER ISLAND last month, I immediately thought of Mark Ruffalo as the actor who would join Leonardo DiCaprio in the upcoming Martin Scorsese adaptation. The description by Dennis Lehane just made me think of Ruffalo's character in ZODIAC and now Ruffalo has officially been cast in the film. Ruffalo will play Chuck Aule, the partner of DiCaprio's Teddy Daniels as they investigate the mysterious disappearance of a mental patient at a hospital located on an island in the Boston harbor. Of course there's waaay more to the story than that but to say more would be hinting at the mystery of the story. Paramount set up SHUTTER as a pre-strike project and already has a script from Laeta Kalogridis. Ruffalo has a number of projects on the way including BLINDNESS with Julianne Moore and THE BROTHERS BLOOM with Adrien Brody and Rachel Weisz. Filming on SHUTTER is expected to begin in March.

Extra Tidbit: A wild rumor was floating around that Stallone was in talks to star as Ruffalo's character but that proved to be false.

Ruffalo is the kiss of death. The Sandra Bullock of male actors. A sissy Vincent D'onofrio-looking doofus. And the worst thing is this wuss is always cast as a cop by great directors like Mann, Fincher and now Scorcesse.

That said, this movie will still be pretty good I'm sure. The great thing about this lame is that he has so little presence on screen he never actually manages to ruin a good movie.

Very nice addition to the cast. I love Ruffalo and this just boosts up my anticipation for this even more. I really love the book although I think the ending is predictable in light of all the other similar movies recently. Nonetheless, the book builds up an intense atmosphere throughout the majority of the story and I'd love to see Scorsese's take on this.
