Rumor: 1st Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer to debut with Civil War

01.06.2016

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Gareth Edwards Felicity Jones Riz Ahmed Diego Luna Banner

Now that STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS has finally hit theaters, when should we expect the first trailer for ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY? Well, Star Wars Time is claiming they've heard that the first look at the Gareth Edwards-directed spinoff will debut when CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR opens on May 6th, which makes perfect sense since Disney owns both Lucasfilm and Marvel.

The trailer will more than likely drop online before the release of CIVIL WAR, however I wouldn't be surprised if we end up seeing it even sooner. You may remember that the second STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS teaser premiered at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in April of last year, and Disney's ZOOTOPIA and THE JUNGLE BOOK are due out on (respectively) March 4th and April 15th, so I think there's also a good chance the trailer will come attached to one of those films, especially the latter.

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY is the first of a planned series of stand-alone movies that take place in the Star Wars universe, and will follow a rogue band of resistance fighters who unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans. When do you think the first trailer will be released, and what do you hope to see in it?

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY will be in theaters on December 16, 2016.

To those saying this is a gamble....

...it's not, because disney would be stupid to be expecting Force Awakens numbers on this. That would be like thinking Captain America: The first avenger would make the same amount as avengers. This movie will do in the 700-900 million worldwide range which is more than acceptable, remember, their making a ton of spin off movies, this is the safest brand outside of fast and furious to be honest.

Disney is going to have to market the shit out of this

This is probably Disney's biggest gamble since Tomorrowland. They have to see if the audience will accept a film that does not have any of the iconic characters of the original saga (unless they have Darth Vader in some capacity) and follows a story that many would probably find boring given we know the end result. I'm a little worried, too, by the sheer fact Gareth Edwards is directing this which if anyone has seen Godzilla isn't necessarily a good thing.

The directing was more than adequate in Godzilla, it was his reluctance to show him more than a handful of times that irked some people, (I am not among them).

We don't actually know the end, just that they are successful in some way (which isn't exactly a shocker). Maybe they'll be the Bothan spies who die, maybe they'll all live to raid again (and that quote has to do with other characters). It lacks the star power, but GotG did pretty well without it so the potential is there if it's a good film.

But obviously expectations need to be tempered. It isn't one of the main films, so should expect numbers in the $500-$800 million range (still a huge hit). Also, the studio needs to remember that if it's good, even if it doesn't make money it keeps people's appetites whetted for episode VIII.

And I thought Edwards did a fine job on Godzilla. Not a great movie, but easily the best giant monster movie in film history (including Pacific Rim). The biggest mistake was killing off their most charismatic character. It could have made the movie far more compelling if you saw Watanabee and Cranston trying to work out the details for tracking and killing the monsters instead of just having that happen off screen (and the focus of the final 2/3 of the film be the military and it's Milquetoast characters).

I want basic stuff out of the trailer. Something to define what the plot of the movie is about, and something to showcase who our main characters will be. That's it, I'm sure there will be scenes of what action to expect, that's a given. But I don't want anything else out of the trailer other than "just a taste"

Overall, I'm hoping there is something in this story which will connect to the greater Star Wars saga other than it being set in the same universe. Specifically, I hope there is

Specifically, I hope there is something that connects this story to what is happening (or going to happen) in the new trilogy. Only way to explain why they're going back to tell us the story of which we already know the outcome - spoiler alert: they get the Death Star plans.

"Overall, I'm hoping there is something in this story which will connect to the greater Star Wars saga other than it being set in the same universe."

In A New Hope, Leia gives R2D2 the stolen Death Star plans. This movie is the story on how they got them. Also, I doubt this movie will have any mention of the Episode 8 since this takes places before ANH.

Yea, that's not what I meant. I didn't mean a direct reference to something that happens TFA. I mean something that's introduced, i.e. a plot thread, that proves to be important in the new trilogy. Or perhaps a clue as to who Snoke really is. Or maybe who the Knights of Ren are.

And I know it's a prequel to a plot point in ANH. I'm hoping the movie will be more than that though. Because on the whole, how the Death Star plans were stolen isn't nearly as important as the fact that the

Because on the whole, how the Death Star plans were stolen isn't nearly as important as the fact that the Rebels used them to destroy the Death Star. If it were, then I'm sure the story would have been included in the ANH to begin with.

Other than being a really good movie?

I want to see Donnie Yen doing what he does best: busting out the martial arts moves.

If there was really a complaint to be had with The Force Awakens (there are more than a few, but for the sake of argument...) it was not utilizing Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian well.

That's what I was thinking of as well. Why cast top-notch martial artists in your movie if you don't allow them to do their thing?

While I have my complaints about THE FORCE AWAKENS, it still is on my "Best of 2015" list.

The Bothans stole the Death Star plans in RETURN OF THE JEDI, not A NEW HOPE.

What are the chances that Felicity Jones's character is actually Rey's mother? I'm just basing this off of apperance.

I've thought of that as well! Maybe Luke hooked up with her after the fall of the Empire?

It's a possibility. I wouldn't mind this given her character appearing as if she's in her mid to late 20s which would put her only a few years ahead of where we find Luke in "A New Hope". The only issue I have with this possibility is how would they explain how they met between this film and the eight or more years between "A New Hope" and "Return of the Jedi"? There would have to be some sort of backstory provided in order to give the audience an understanding of how exactly these two

It could also explain the British accent Rey has if Jones' character maintains her accent.
