Rumor: Are the Wachowskis writing more Matrix films?

Feb. 28, 2014by: Niki Stephens

Can you believe its been 10 years since MATRIX REVOLUTIONS? I was obsessed with those films. My dad and I went to see each of them at theater when they came out. I remember when I saw the first one, and my mind was completely blown. I felt like had actually taken the red pill, talking about all these crazy theories afterwards. Needless to say, I enjoyed the trilogy. One of the best in the sci-fi genre. Also, I may or may not have wanted to be Trinity...

What if I told you that another one was on the way? Yes, another MATRIX trilogy but this time, prequels.

Lets slap big fat rumor on this one for starters. The guys over at Latino Review seem to have it on good authority that the Wachowskis are already working on a whole new set up within the world of the Matrix. The siblings have had a long time relationship with Warner Brothers, but the studio needs a franchise they think can stand toe to toe with the new STAR WARS and AVATAR flicks.

The site had no details to offer on a story, as it is in very early development but they did mention a previous outline with the birth of the Matrix at its center. Theres also the tiny fact that the Architect did mention that Neo wasnt the first One.

Again, take with a huge grain of salt. While I could see something like this happening as part of a strategic move, Im not inclined to hold my breath on it.

Sorry, the first film was just a rip off of the far superior Dark City. And the sequels didn't have a great script to rip off, so they became a convoluted unstructured mess of exposition and bad CGI.

Matrix was nothing like Dark City. Dark City is about an alien race that throws their abductees into this huge city in space to fuck with em and see how humans tick. Matrix is AI takes over the world and uses humans as a power source until one of them wakes up and fights back. The two aren't even remotely similar. But I agree that Dark City is better.

The Matrix is exactly the same film as Dark City. From "the one" waking up to a false world. To the well dressed men in black that talk coldly & overtly proper, and only ever calling each other Mr. This or Mr. That. To the the One having the power to alter the physics of this false world, just like the men in black, only The One is stronger. John Murdoch stops a knife in midair by using his power exactly the same way as Neo stops the bullets. They even use the same visual effect of the wavy

Both films have characters gaining knowledge by placing needles into the skull. The real aliens in Dark City are the squid like aliens with long tentacles, the real machines in The Matrix are squid like robots with long tentacles. Both main characters even learn to fly at the end. The similarity go on and on, even the visuals are almost identical.

I see what your doing, but The Matrix isnt a rip off of Dark City. Dark City was released in 1998, by the time it was released, The Matrix was just starting or already in production. There are many things that are similar, but not a rip off. But I do love Dark City as well, and hope Hollywood don't decide to remake it.

The script to Dark City was written in 1993. Watch a DVD from netflix called 'Dialog with David Goyer'. He gives an interview with a producer of The Matrix & Dark City. Goyer says "The Dark City script went from studio to studio, and they kept hiring writers to try and make it more mainstream", then the producer says "Well, the Wachowskis figured out how to make it mainstream". Then Goyer got angry, took a deep breath, and said "I don't think I'm allowed to talk about that."

The only similarities between 13th Floor & The Matrix is the living artifical world inside of a computer, and the main character realizing he is in the machine. Beyond that, the movies are radically different. Different plots, different villains, different structure.

The only differences between the Matrix & Dark City is that Dark City's villains are aliens, and The Matrix's villains are robots. Also, Dark City has 2 people waking up and rebelling against the creators of the artificial world, and The Matrix has a whole secret society of people who woke up and are rebelling against the creators of the artificial world. Outside of that, everything else is the same.

The plot points, structure, characters, and plot twists are all the same. The main characters are the same. The Morpheus character is even in Dark City played by Kiefer Sutherland, and they both try to train the hero to manipulate the physics of the fake world. They both know our hero is "the one" and is gifted with these special abilities (these abilities in both films are exactly the same). They both show our hero that the world isn't real. They both inject the needed knowledge into our hero's head by using a needle to penetrate the skull (The Matrix uses the base of the skull, Dark City uses the front).

Both movies even starts off similar, with our hero waking up to something odd in a grungy apartment. They both get a cryptic phone call that warns them of the coming agents. Then they both try to hide from the agents by climbing onto a ledge of a building. In The Matrix our main villain agent is Mr. Smith, in Dark City our main villain agent is Mr. Hand. In both movies these agents speak with exactly the same mannerisms, and in both films they can manipulate and reshape the world around them.

I think you're confusing "similar" and "exactly the same." Also, it's Agent Smith, not Mr. Smith. I think you have enough ammo in your argument. There's no need to be greedy.

Yes to more matrix movies, a big no to prequels

I never like prequels, to me it takes the charm and mystery away from already solid movie(s) for example a movie like Alien, i dont have to know everything.
Ever since i watched revolutions i always wanted a part 4, even when it had an acceptable ending i always felt as if the story wasnt finished and would love to see Neo back somehow, maybe the peace is over because they see the humans recovering and becoming stronger again, Neo is kept in some sort of coma and connected to their machines

I wouldn't want a prequel, but I'm down for a sequel. I want to know where Keanu Reeves character has been. A prequel makes me think that the birth of the Matrix would be maybe too similar in some ways to the birth of Skynet in the Terminator franchise. I don't care to watch any "Ones" from the past because obviously they failed to bring down the Matrix.

From what I gathered, Neo is dead. The oracle hinted that another incarnation of the one would again be born into the Matrix at some point, and that she would meet him again, but I don't think it necessarily has to look like Keanu Reeves.

Why not?

The first was amazing, the second was great (in terms of action scenes, not much in story), the third was ok (but still better than a lot of movies), so why not?
I prefer another Matrix Trilogy (done right, of course), than a million remakes.

I can't see this happening at all, nor do I want it coming to light. The Matrix was such a huge step in the action/sci-fi genre and it tied everything so nicely within the trilogy. We know there were other "ones" than Neo, and they all failed on defeating the Agents, so technically, we'll know what will happen going in.

They didn't fail in defeating the agents. They chose a few individuals to help rebuild Zion and continue the human race, while returning to the source of the machine world and reinserting the code they carried into the Matrix, (so that more versions of "the one" could be born and continue the system). It was either that or witness the complete destruction of Zion and the end of the human race by the sentinels. With the incarnation of Keanu Reeve's Neo, he opted for a different path because he

Talk about beating a dead horse...

The Wachowskis were lucky they still had a following after the original trilogy. All their movies since revolutions have been bombs with audiences. They know how to make movies look awesome but their storytelling sucks. This is desperation on both WB and the Wachowskis.

If it's a film about the second renaissance from the Animatrix, count me in. It's a story very worth telling. I want more original sci-fi from Wachowskis. I'm looking forward to Jupiter Ascending.

Two things:
First, I don't know why you're listing Avatar as a brand name sci-fi trilogy along with something like Star Wars. Don't, just don't!
Second, Another Matrix trilogy? Aside from the first movie, this trilogy was such a labor to watch! Talk about bad storytelling. Another set of movies set in this world, and a prequel at that, will do no one any good. The sequels fell off the rails with ideas that the writers couldn't keep on track and resorted to having scenes "explain" things

Which is why we have scenes with the Architect where they just speak in hyperbole and the audience understands nothing.

I'm not keen on the idea of prequels for this franchise. I want to know if the peace established in Revolutions between humans and machines can last and what happens if it doesn't. On a related note, the superbowl commercial with Morpheus advertising a luxury car was terrible. They were about 10 years too late with that one.

I liked the first Matrix film, albeit a rather blatant ripoff of Ghost In the Shell's visual and storytelling style. The Animatrix shorts were quite awesome, but the overall plot line of Reloaded and Revolutions were just too ridiculous. But let's say the are making a continuation of the trilogy. What will be the focus of the story? Another war? Or maybe a kind of role reversal where the protagonist is now a rogue program much like Agent Smith was, with a mission to end both man and machine?

...and the video game. Enter the Matrix was pretty awesome.

Why is everyone so scared to do direct sequels nowadays? It seems like everything is either a prequel or a reboot. Yeah there are parts of a matrix prequel I'd be interested in, but overall I'd much rather see a continuing story that goes forward.

If they could get some D.C. adaptations done properly maybe they wouldn't need to dig out & dust off this property?

I'm gonna remain neutral on this for now. Reloaded has grown on me over time and I've forgiven Revolutions for its blatantly obvious Christ allegory.

I don't think prequels are the way to go though. I would like to see the world of the Matrix thru normal people's eyes (no the "One") after Revolutions.

christ, i hate prequels. they take the story backwards instead of moving on. nobody cares what happened to the characters before they were heroes. although i can't imagine how they would continue the matrix story. it had a feeling of utter finality to it. and am i the only one who liked revolutions? the final battle between neo and smith was incredibly apocalyptic.

It was Awesome. People just like to sound cool by saying things like the original is always the best. I view THE MATRIX TRILOGY just as I do the LOTR trilogy and the BTTF trilogy. As one long story. And I think every Matrix movie did something different.

I honestly love the Matrix Trilogy despite a mediocre conclusion, so therefore, I would welcome another film that would redeem itself from the ending of Revolutions.

I think I would rather see a trilogy that would end it than a prequel. The peace is broken somehow and the new films carry on where the old game left off.

This is kind of smart of WB. Batman just ended and Man of Steel 2 was pushed back because of Ben Affleck's leg. They need a backup plan and people forget that the Wachowskis made V for Vendetta, Cloud Atlas and are about to release Jupiter Ascending which has looked fucking great so far. These guys make quality movies and the Matrix is what put them on the map. It's their best shot and they have been away from it for awhile. I love the first film- it still remains one of my favourites.

I always felt that they could have streamlined the two sequels down into one awesome sequel.

I like the idea of a new film - I'd quite like to see one done in 3D but not a trilogy. Just one.

Hipe Hop - because it doesn't hold up, you see it from a different perspective. You have had time to reflect on it and it isn't so fresh anymore. The first time you are awed, the second or third you are not as enamored and tend to be more open minded when watching, listening or partaking.

Jeff - hater is a term commonly used by imbecilic douche bags who are upset that someone has a different opinion than they do or like something different than they do yet the person using the term

Please no. The first one was decent, but corny & pretentious (Neo = The One, get it, its an anagram! Ha, so clever!). But the sequels were pure ass. Whatever magic the Wachowskis had with the first film, was immediately lost for the rest of their career. And even their latest, Jupiter Ascending, looks terrible.

I actually don't believe this rumor, but I hope to God it's true.

The Matrix trilogy is my favorite trilogy/franchise of all time. And I LOVE Star Wars, Indiana Jones, LOTR/Hobbit, Harry Potter, Godfather, Back to the Future, Toy Story, etc. I do understand some complaints with the Reloaded and Revolutions' story, and I agree it get's a little bit heavy-handed and complicated, but I still love them. At the very least, the cinematography, choreography, and action are absolutely impeccable

As long as the Wachowskis are writing AND directing, I'm stoked. Although I'd prefer a continuation of sorts, and not a prequel trilogy.

Just leave it as a trilogy. I thought it ended on a high note and wrapped all of the stories nicely.

Back in the day I thought it would be cool to see a prequel trilogy following Morpheus as he became captain, but that was before films/tv became flooded with a bunch of [link] While I love the Matrix series and think there might be untapped potential in this universe, I'd almost prefer to just keep it as a trilogy. Like Back to the Future.

Neo wasn't the first One, same as Jason Bourne wasn't the only One of the program. Three Matrix films are enough. The last one concludes everything perfectly.

The Matrix trilogy was great overall, if lacking in story. Like so many trilogies, the third was not great really, but I always felt like the writers just kind of painted themselves into a corner with the first two. I would be happy to get back in the Matrix world (nice pun, eh?).

I dont know what exactly these so called plans are, but if its anything to do with the birth of the Matrix, the story for that is already in the Animatrix anime movie. And its honestly pretty damn good. Kinda

And its honestly pretty damn good. Kinda like the Terminator story, but instead of Schwarzeneger robots and death, you have spider robots and plugging people in.

I would say the term "BIG FAT RUMOR" really applies here. Not getting my hopes up yet.

Matrix Revolutions came out in 2003, it's been well over 10 years

If Warner Bros. is betting on starting a new franchise to compete with Fox's Avatar and Disney's Star Wars, they need to redirect their attention to Harry Potter or Tolkien's world. The Matrix world died after Reloaded.
