Rumor: Are these the films that will comprise Marvel's Phase Three?

Feb. 14, 2014by: Alex Maidy

A source told us last week that one of the guaranteed Phase Three films from Marvel would be a sequel to GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. The source is reputable, but another site is claiming their insider info is just as reliable. So, what do they think about our source's intel?

They call it bullshit. Claiming that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is not only a one-off film but that no sequel is in development, the source at SchmoesKnow also says Marvel is trying to shy away from making sequels for individual characters and rather more standalone films introducing new superheroes. With that in mind, what do they claim will be Phase Three?

There has been talk about Black Panther and lots of talk about The Inhumans, theyre in the pipeline but are pretty much in the same boat that Dr. Strange and Ant-Man were in two years ago, where they want them to happen, and they will most likely both happen, but its just a question of how soon. However, those five films (ANT-MAN, CAPTAIN AMERICA 3, THOR 3, DOCTOR STRANGE, and AVENGERS 3) are sure things and I can guarantee you they will all be announced at Comic Con if not sooner.

It seemed that CAPTAIN AMERICA and THOR were locks to wrap up their trilogies while DOCTOR STRANGE seemed like a safe assumption. But, the lack of BLACK PANTHER or GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 seems a little fishy. At this point, though, anything is possible. I would find it very hard to believe that Marvel would not bank on a sequel to GUARDIANS if it is a hit this summer, but stranger things have happened.

What seems to be for certain is that Marvel will likely make an announcement either at this or next year's San Diego Comic Con to confirm the line-up for Phase Three. Until then, everything is conjecture.

The rest of Phase Two will be the following: CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER opens April 4, 2014, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens August 1, 2014, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON opens May 1, 2015. Phase Three begins when ANT-MAN opens July 17, 2015

Still no Hulk!

I trust Marvel implicitly but the fact that they seem to refuse to give Hulk another solo movie blows! He stole the show in The Avengers and Ruffalo certainly has enough star power (along with Hulk's popularity) to make a solo film very profitable. I would like one really good solo Ironman movie with Mandarin truly beining the villian before he is likely retired or killed in the 3rd Avengers. I like Dr. Strange being thrown into the mix so he can start taking over the Avengers with Cap

I don't think I need a 3rd Thor film...I would much rather have Black Panther, Hulk, GOTG, Hawkeye/Widow or Ironman...hell I would rather have a Loki solo film or another "villian centric" film with Thanos setting him up as the ultimate villian for The Avengers 3. Like the choices just switch in something a little more interesting than Thor 3 and I'm completely on board (also I really like Thor I just think there are more interesting characters to tackle in a solo film).

No Iron Man film in Phase 3 means Marvel/Disney loses out on hundreds of millions of extra money. I can't really see why they want to stop making those films. Makes no sense.

Because everyone involved in the films, including the star, has said they are done with the series for now. Whether or not its still popular, creatively they told the stories they wanted to, and there are hundreds of other characters Disney/Marvel want to use. Don't look for a fourth Thor or Cap wither. The rumors are that after three, the individual cycles will end, and other characters will emerge.

I should imagine their plans are always open to adjustment anyway. If a Guardians of the Galaxy ends up being a hit a sequel is likely, and who's to say they wouldn't do a Rocket Raccoon solo movie if he ends up stealing the show in GOTG - might have a wider appeal than most people would give it credit for at the moment. I'd hope Ant-Man would warrant a sequel at some point too, but there's a chance characters like his would just end up guesting in other hero movies. Another solo Hulk movie

Another solo Hulk movie is conspicuous in its absence from their plans too, especially given how well received his relaunch in The Avengers was.
All in all it seems Marvel has more great properties than it can usefully develop in the foreseeable future.

I believe the previous news was that they were PLANNING to make GOTG 2 and put it in Phase 3 which makes sense but they obviously are not going to announce the sequel until GOTG comes out and they know how much money it makes.

I call bullshit.

I can say with 100% certainty, that this new Phase 3 info is complete and utter bullshit. Doc Savage and Ant-Man are the only two acurate films on that list at this time. Trust me.

Well Marvel Studios disagrees with you because they've already confirmed Thor 3.

GOTG will only be one film

because they are all going to die. It's the best way(albeit not the only way) to show powerful and dangerous Thanos really is. This would also make room for the rumored Iron Man cameo. They will die either between phase 2 and phase 3, or at the beginning of avengers 3.

I think all of them dieing would be pretty fucking epic and badass. Would really show the power that Thanos has and would really foreshadow a deadly assault with him and The Avengers.

I thought the same thing, basically using GOTG to show how powerful Thanos is would be an epic move. Seeing him destroy another completely "super group" would make the stakes for The Avengers 3 as high as any comic book movie ever.

Obviously we've known about Ant-Man (and Avengers 3) for a while now. With the positive reaction to Thor 2 and the current positive buzz around the upcoming Captain America 3 I think it was a given that a third film for each was in the cards. With Iron Man ending up a trilogy I think that has set a bench mark and it would sort of feel like a failure of sorts if they didn't give Thor and the Cap the same.

Yes of course Doctor Strange has been on course to get a film, especially now as they

Yes of course Doctor Strange has been on course to get a film, especially now as they seem to want him to replace Downey jr/ Stark. BUT, if there rumours about them wanting Depp are true then - as he's a busy chap - they've had to push Strange to phase 4 . Which also makes sense if Avengers 3 truly is the last we see of Downey Jr?!

So what should fill the gap is phase 3? Well, if GOTG is a hit (and they are obviously thinking/hoping it will be) it would make sense to cash in on that with a sequel!

For all we know Avengers 3 could mark the last we see of Evans and Hemsworth too, so Phase 4 will be perfect timing to bring in new blood.

GotG is a test

After reading the article is can believe that GotG is a one off . It seems like its a test movie to see if a a movie with characters that are unknown to most people except for diehard comic book fans can be successful just by having a marvel studios title card in front of it. The other reason that I tend to believe the schmoesknow story is the fact that they named their source and that shows confidence. Even in this article your source wasn't named.

We will never reveal our source. That would be stupid.

Schmoesknow didn't name their source either. It's a fake name.

We'll see when the announcements come down officially. You can always check our previous scoops to see how they stack up to what we know today: [link] [link]">

They should chill with the "phases" . They should focus on well written scripts. I have a bad feeling that pretty soon the super heroes movie genres will over saturate the big screens.

This is a tough call

It's hard to decide whether or not this would be a good thing. I can't determine whether or not a GOTG sequel is a good idea since the movie has yet to come out. A sequel to Thor is a given because of how it ended, Avengers 3 (also a given), but a Captain America sequel may seem a bit tiresome unless they're intended on doing some pretty controversial stuff (killing off Cap, maybe?). I'm hoping there will be a Black Panther movie, there needs to be a popular black superhero sooner rather than

Sounds fine by me. So I'm assuming Phase four and five will consist of Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and The Inhumans then?

And still no sequel to Incredible Hulk?

well with Avengers 3 coming out in 2018 would be a bit ridiculous if they did one year of phase 4 in 2019 and called it quits

They're doing 2 films a year, so;
2015: Avengers 2 (End Phase two), Ant-Man (Start Phase 3)
2016: Cap 3, Thor 3
2017: Dr. Strange, Avengers 3.
That only puts 2 years between Avengers 2 and 3. I'd say that 2017 will have Gaurdians 2, then 2018 will be Avengers 3.
