Rumor: Benedict Cumberbatch to join Star Wars: Episode VII as a Sith Lord

09.03.2013

It's been rumored that some major casting news for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII could drop soon, and Film Chronicles has learned that Benedict Cumberbatch might be joining the project. Film Chronicles doesn't reveal a source, but several sites have heard similar news. In fact, Badass Digest believes they know who Cumberbatch will be playing in the upcoming film:

I've heard this too, and I've heard the role he's up for is that of a bad guy, almost certainly a Sith. And it's a major role, one that will continue throughout the whole new trilogy. This part is why he dropped out of Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak.

Badass Digest also says there are a few other projects Benedict Cumberbatch will have to leave in order to work on STAR WARS: EPISODE VII with director J.J. Abrams, so this isn't set in stone just yet and there still is a chance it won't happen. There have been a few official denials about Benedict Cumberbatch starring in the new film, but are you going to really believe a rebuttal from a J.J. Abrams production? Remember how things went for Abrams and "John Harrison"? Cumberbatch might not be a lock for the new STAR WARS but it certainly sounds like there is interest in bringing Sherlock to the Dark Side, and if it is true hopefully we'll get an official announcement shortly.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII is scheduled to be released sometime in 2015.

Extra Tidbit: You down with this news? I think it's great, but I really hope Benedict Cumberbatch doesn't get typecast as a villain. The dude is way too talented.

Is Cumberbatch the new Christopher Lee?

Both will have played villains in Lord of the Rings/Hobbit films. If this rumor is true, both will also have been Star Wars villains. Could just be a coincidence. Unless Cumberbatch gets rumored as the next Bond villain as well.

Now, if this was a prequel trilogy to the prequel trilogy... I would've said Cumberbatch would make quite a good younger version of Count Dooku, possibly training up an even younger Qui-Gon Jinn...

but that would also make the film 'Star Wars: Episode Minus Two'

Not gonna lie... whilst I am all for casting announcements (real ones, not just rumours) I would also REALLY like to know what the title is going to be?

I have money on "Star Wars: Episode Seven: Balance of the Force". But

At least JJ can't just miss off the episode and subtitle altogether, can he. Can he?

Hmm.... Maybe we'll get Star Wars Into Darkness...

Soon we'll get an official notification that he is DEFINITELY NOT playing Thrawn. Under no circumstances is he playing Thrawn. He's playing a new character named Bob Smith, who is definitely not Admiral Thrawn.

Probably false

But it'd be really interesting to see. Geez, is there any other villains in the Star Wars universe besides the Sith?? I think we can all agree that the whole Sith Lord/Secret Apprentice thing is getting kind of old.

Lemme explain whats happening here:

Star Trek into Darkness is being released on Blu Ray next week. To drum up sales, some studio execs are hyping up rumors of Cumberbatch as a Star Wars villain so everyone will go out and spend the $25 to see how he played a Star Trek villain.

It was the same thing with the Cranston as Lex Luthor rumors. The final season of Breaking Bad was about to premiere that week, so spreading rumor of Cranston as another iconic bald villain used to pump up the ratings. Only now, as the Breaking Bad

What's Going On Here?

JJ Abrams, now Cumberbatch? Star Wars and Star Trek are supposed to be the eternal rivals of science fiction film history. Why in the hell are they sharing directors and actors?

Because the movie gods want to see what hare-brained theories fans come up with to say Cumberbatch's Star Wars villain and Khan are the same person.

That was James Earl Jones' voice if you're thinking about the infamous "NOOOOOOOOO" at the end of Revenge of the Sith."

Khan or no Khan...

...this would happily continue the tradition of casting Britain's best Sherlocks as Star Wars scum and villainy.

Still have to see Hammer House of Horrors take on Hound of Baskervilles. Top of my Halloween list.

I'm no Holmes expert, but from what I have seen that one is easily my favorite. Then, I am a huge sucker for just about anything Hammer.

If you' asked to name a bunch of actors I'd like to see in the new Star Wars trilogy then Cumberbatch would undoubtedly be one of them.

And in a role of a Sith? Well that just sounds perfect!

I can get behind this news, I don't hate the casting if it turns out to be true. I think this guy could play either a Jedi or Sith. Although he looks a little clean cut to be playing a Stih.

Whatever he plays he would be great for it.

Would still love to see him be Doctor Strange or Brainiac in a future superhero film.

The danger of this is the character being "John Harrison" with a lightsaber. Cumberbatch is a brilliant actor, but casting him as a Sith Lord might try to play too heavily on audience expectations; said audience likely being most familiar with him from his role in Into Darkness. It's typecasting.

Whilst I do sort of agree with this statement, I also don't think BC should be ruled out because he's played a similar character.

Also, gotta remember that whilst JJ is the director that brought us John Harrison - it's different writers, and we don't know what sort of character we're really looking at.

In the same vein as people complaining that Mark Strong shouldn't be Lex Luthor as he's already played roles similar- I don't see "typecasting" as a problem, I see as "leading up" to this

Also, it's sometimes better to cast with someone you know can play the role than go for someone different. Imagine the uproar if the headline read "zac efron to play Sith Lord"

And not gonna lie - "John Harrison with a lightsabre" sounds pretty cool to me ;-)
